Wonder if my sound card is fried, or maybe the kids f%$#@ with some setting?

I'd guess that the microphone is on thus creating feedback.
Turn off the mic.
or
restart computer
or
?

If laptop and you have a external mic then be aware that laptops have a built in mic. If so, double check mic is off thru the software setting on the internal mic. The external can easily be turn on/off via a hardware switch.

Desktop OK

The is a feature in windows that selects the type of speakers. I found it located in :

control panel
click multimedia, click audio, click advance properties, then select the type speakers that you presently have connected to you computer.
