Just curious here...

What do you guys use / prefer on your wire line leadhead jigging rod tips, roller tip or nonroller carbide?

I have used both extensively, but prefer roller tips, something about the wire dragging across the tip that bothers me. Both seem to work fine, guess it is just personal preference...

Roller tip definitley. The wire may get kinked with a regular guide.

I don't like roller tips
If you break up your wire lingths like we do, the knot to the dacron gets caught on the roller when letting out!

This may be a stupid question, but, can you cast a wire line, or do you have to feed it out while trolling? I have never used wire line.

One must feed the wire out while trolling. I have never heard of anyone casting it and can not imagine how one would do so.

I have used roller tips, but the dacron knot does have a tendency to hang up there...

Uffah.....Don't even think about casting!!!!! That day would not be fun. You have to let wire out and at a fast pace.

Personally I like a roller tip. But I just finished up a new Lami BT 85 7S jigging rod and used Silicon Nitride II guides with a regular tip. I will break the wire with dacron. Also I figured I can use this rod chunking mono or braid with a regular tip so that is why I went regular on my new rod.

How you jig will make a difference!
I let out my wire, lay down the rod and jig by hand all the time.
Jiggin with the rod, a roller tip is better.

I agree!! Hand jig, need the dacron and set rod a side, regular tip. Jiging with rod Roller tip.

But I am different, I jig by hand on all wire with rod in holder and use roller.

Theres always one in the bunch:hihi:

I feel your pain. I had all my wire rods switched to roller tips because IMO the wire tends to grab on the guide and makes for a more difficult and uncomfortable retrieve. I thought it was the wire and switched from stainless to monel and then to that other mix and nothing seemed to help, then swited the tip and life was good. I like carbide on the other guides though. I just use a tip roller.

They make several roller types. They make a swivel tip roller but it is like 50 bucks just for the tip. And they might even make a carbide roller tip. I opted for the standard roller tip that my shop said all the charter guys use and they replace the roller every year or two (and they use them constantly). I use wire only when I have to so mine should last several years and they are easy to replace.

BTW, I see Tsunami now makes a wire line boat rod....I have yet to see it but I bet it will give those penn wire rods which I have (which are just so-so IMO) a run for their money. I saw a photo of them and I already like the grip. Don't know what kind of guides they have though.
