I've been thinking of getting a new rod.....I need some advise on a spinning rod for beach fishing......I wanted to get something that will get me out there....I will be fishing lures....probably needles and poppers....any advise as to make.....size....I want to be able to throw a plug a good distance.....seems like with the rods I have now, I fall just a bit short......Thanks, Jay

Just picked up a Loomis sur1266. It ain't cheap, but it IS a rocket launcher. Very wide sweet spot also.
It might be a little long though, depending on what your looking for. It's 10'6"

10' 6" is not too big.....I will check that out.

I'd take a look at what size plugs you're tossing and where. A big rod may cast far but the fatigue issue will get you if working a lot of beach.

My go to surf rod is a Saltheart built Allstar 1265-2. 1-3 is sweet, 2oz is the spot. Highly recommend you consider. I'm sure Saltheart will chime in. Also recommend you see MikeP's article on set ups, which I believe is in FAQs. http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/showthread.php?t=23185

If u wanna launch a pencil into the next county.the arra xra 132 2 is the premier weapon.next to that would be the gsb 132 1M.I have both.I plug more with the Arra an pure pencil pop with the GSB.Lots of people consider the 11 fter overkill.But I really like it.It'll handle the big wood i like to thro with ease an it works the pencil as effortlessly as any thing as the long powerfull rod naturally bounces to a perfect cadence once u get it going.The last time I was in Mike's store he one in there i think it was for basic Patrick.Beatifull job sells em for 300 an some.if i remember right.Either one of the Lamiglass rods are twice the loomis for this application if u ask me.Lots will say u don't have to cast far well i like the extra distance when i need it.Go to Montauk where casters are king.If u wanna see some guys really flex one.150 yds with a Gibbs 3 1/4 pencil is no easy feat.

Well u don't hold a 11 fter under ur arm.
I like to rest the but on the crook of my thigh.For poppin an between the legs for plugging.It really doesn't bother me at all.not being able to reach the fish on the other side of the rock would fatigue me way more.Of course Spence i could see Ur problem As the ruset tones of the Arra barely co-ordinate with any outdoor wear.

what NIB said!:uhuh: good advice, the 1322 is an amazing stick but i still love the 1321 for pencils. If you wanna go glass 1363m will do the trick and pencil pop real well, esp 3oz pencils.
These are the top of the line casting wise unless you wanna go beserk and go zziplex or something.
Also these sticks are diesel, esp the 1321, you can turn fish and have a better chance at landing that cow.

I think the Action of Arra is kinda between the gsb and a glass rod.U can really fire it but u have to wait a little like the glass.i don't hink the glass casts nearly as good as either one of the graphite sticks.The arra is my favorite. i only use the GSB as not to wear out or break the arra.That is, if i'm gonna fish in some perilous spots.The bigger rod is nice if u need the hieight to reach around a rock while fighting a fish but it's when they get next to u that long rod becomes a lttile tricky.U will have to rear way back raise the rod an grab the leader.which is tough to recommend with a good fish hanging on the other end.Thats where a longish heavy leader helps.

Lots of great opinions here but where do you fish and what do you throw?xra1204 for sand and gsb1201M for rocks are tough to beat for starters.

The "plum" color of the Ron Arra is nearly identical to the "plum" John Lobb (Paris) shoe. While I wouldn't advocate it for surfcasting (full grain handsewn leather, no carbide spikes) it's a match with any navy, gray or taupe suit you could toss at it.

The Ron Arra is like the plum or cordovan shoe...nearly universal, it goes with just about everything.

That being said you can always get the GSB 1321L and cut a bit off the tip until it suits your liking. Mine is about 4"...it will cast a 3 ounce plug a freaking mile yet go lower or higher as you'd like.

But the length does wear after a while...

It all depends on what you're doing.

agreed... I fish all night w/a 10 no problem. The 10-6 loomis is lighter than my old 10. Also, I'm not so sure I agree on the pencils... The 1266 makes that baby dance.

Ive found that the balance of the rod is more important than the weight of a rod. Or in otherwords, if i am fishing a unbalanced 1213M i am going to be whooped after a few hours of working a rubber eel... but if that rod is balanced right with a bit of lead in the butt.. i can go forever.
