What is at least 20 pounds, has another fish approx. 15 pounds near it, is very dark, breaks the surface a bit as it plays around in the shallows, and hangs out in Newport this time of year? Couldn't tell if they were spawning or not but being that there was 2 of them acting oddly that was certainly the impression I got.

All offerings were ignored. I really wish I had a snag hook.

Also its tail is much like a blackfish or tripletail.

A giant blackfish is my best guess as to what I saw tonight. Any other ideas?

Right around slack and in a lee. They were way too dark to be a bass so that must be what I saw.

No where near fresh water. I was at one of the beaches. It was too dark to be a carp, I think.

That's a numerically perfect description of what happened.

Pete, when I used to live on Jamestown, this time of year I would start to see the same type of stuff you saw last night. One night one of those fish hit my 6" sluggo, low and behold a honker Tautog over 10 lbs. I caught 3 more that night all over 5 lbs all on sluggos.

Leave my girls alone Pete :D :D :D :D come November they are mine... all mine :D:D:D:D Sounds like they are on their way up the bay to get some action..... they hug the rocks going up to the flats....

Only other thing I've seen do that is at an unnamed spot in the west bay... for 2 weeks three years ago this spot had bass at the bottom of the tide and fluke at the top... all at night and all on the surface....

You would have really liked this fish. REAL big. I was fairly certain it was a blackfish when I saw it but the size of it made me think it might be something else. 20 pounds is a conservative guess. The first time I saw it I didn't get a good look at it and I thought it was a baby seal. :laugha:

Pete, if you see crafty angler anytime soon, bring this up to him. I have taken a vow of silence about this, but he knows very well what you saw and even better, how to target them..
Goosefish told me that blackfish kiss while spawning............ cool eh?
