So last year I doscoverd that my whole transom was rotted, so I popped the top off my Grady White and preceeded to replace the transom. Went pretty good and got it done is about 12 hours. While doing this I noticed a soft spot in the deck in front of the bilge opening. I didn;t like how the opening was designed so I figured I would cut it out this year and be done with it. We I started to cut, and cut....and cut. 6 feet later I hit dry wood hahaha. So I ripped it all out and replaced it today all I have to do now it glass it next weekend and she will be ready to rock. I wich I brought my camers but I didn;t think it was going to get this in depth. Word to the wise, there is one tool, that is a MUST have when removing rotted/wet wood when the wood has to be dug out, and that is an electric chainsaw.. IT will make short work of any wood, but basicly bounces off glass.

Next week I will take some pics.:jump1:

I'm in the middle of the same thing!! wish I thought of the elect. chain saw!!@! I used drills, screwdrivers, small pry bars. I also have one of those hanging in my garage, but didn't think of it. It bounces off fiberglass???? GREAT idea!!

I used a cup brush on an angle grinder, but it will go thru the glass if you are not careful.

I have done this over ten times atleast, after a while you figure stuff out hahah. Yeah it bounces right off, it will cut it but you have to lean into pretty hard. The first time I tried it I was stuck on how to get the non rotten part of a transom out, it was wet but not soft, but still had to come out, it took me two days soldm to dig out a litte area, tried everything, then it hit me, a chainsaw cuts front AND top, top it the key has you can slide it in any crevice and this allows you to not cut all the glass out. When I finally tried the chainsaw it took less than ten minutes to finish! it worked so good I used it everything I need to extract rotted wood.

Yup tried them too, the chainsaw works about 5 times faster and can be controlled much easier, it truly is amazing how good it works, I have actually made money replacing transoms without having to charge tons of money because of a chansaw.
