Whether this was because they were in the contest or not is irrelavent because this kind of thing happens everyday along the coast contest or no contest. Couple jamokes get a good one they were going to haul it's carcass in for pictures and bragging rights anyway with no intention of consuming it. 36 pounds from the beach these days is a good fish. Assuming that OTW contest is to blame for this is a stretch, that fish wasn't going back swimming anyway.

Of course every bass you ever caught was eaten by you correct? Either that or it was sold.

Maybe GF wanted to disqualify em for saying they keep an eat only under 24 inchers.

Ah the internet, and the multiple choice it has in how ones comments are taken...
I see it as two locals ( call us locals, scuffers, jamokes, or SOB's, it don't matter, just don't call us late for dinner :hihi:), who had the good sense to know a 36 pounder is good for "giving away" fillets, and keep some folks happy, the 24 inch comment, I see as local humor, as we all know the smaller ones taste waaaaay better( I remember fat 18 inchers, :drool: and wish I could take one of them once in a while )
Truth be told if most bass eaters tasted them smaller ones, they would loose their desire for the larger ones real quick.
OTW... welll... that's a deep subject, ;) but they ain't at fault here.. that fish was going to be kept as a "good will" fish for friends to eat anyhow. My speculation is that it prolly wouldn't have been dragged in to the shop tho, these guys just prolly see it as "Hey, it might be a shot for a prize, let's do it."

Does the flavor change much in the older fish, or is it just the texture?

It's also got that extra mercury to ensure the kids grow up big and strong :musc:

Just for the record. nib got it right !! I come from when we would only eat the fish around 20 " and put the breeders back. ( when we were not fishing and selling to satisfy the dinner tables of the crowd down yonder ) BUT --- with that said, I was refering to the comment that they only eat the smaller fish. If someone is going to do so they should keep the yap shut and not encourage everyone in earshot to take note. :splat:
