View Full Version : Nice afternoon at the canal striprman 06-11-2006, 08:46 PM got some excersize canal 1 striprman 0 BrianS 06-11-2006, 08:55 PM I was there for a few hours this morning. That place was LOADED..... with people that is.. I didnt care, wanted to get my pregnant wife out of the house... 2 hours, no fish, only 1 schoolie seen caught, but it was so nice out and so worth it. Mike P 06-11-2006, 09:46 PM It was a 0-0 tie between me and the Canal this AM. No fish, but no lost jigs :D Last time out I got blown out 7-0 and had to invoke the mercy rule. NIB 06-12-2006, 04:53 AM 7-0 ouch. U musta felt like the diamondbacks. CANAL RAT 06-12-2006, 01:57 PM been going rain or shine and have only schoolies to show for it. i think the night time is the right time or its time to try the south shore beaches Diggin Jiggin 06-12-2006, 02:18 PM Canal rat, you gotta get deep and out into the middle. 3,4, 5 oz jigs.. The past 10 days have been slow, but if you find a rip, cast upcurrent from it and jig thru it, you will find some better fish. "uffah!!" 06-12-2006, 06:13 PM Just how do you fish the canal? I'm not looking for a particlar spot. I mean do you cast out as far as you can, and let the current take it, or try to retrieve it right a way.I would like to try to fish there atleast once anyway! Its about 1-1/2 hr ride from here. Mike P 06-12-2006, 06:23 PM Using a jig from 3-5 oz depending on location and current speed, you cast a bit upcurrent and free spool it down to the bottom. Then you work it over the bottom with rod lifts, trying to stay in contact with the bottom. How far you can let it swing depends on what there is downcurrent to hang up on. Of course, it reads easier than it is in practice. You just have to get out there and do it. There's a learning curve--a pretty steep one--and you will leave lead behind, especially at first. Vectorfisher 06-12-2006, 06:36 PM I use the 10 and 2 or 2 and 10 rule depending on the direction of the tide. I never jig on the way in, I know miss some good structure I am sure but I just hate leaving $ 10.00 at the bottom of the canal. First time out this year I fished a spot where I usually have no trouble well I lost 3 jigs:wall: I guess things change more than I think, also have nothing to show for this season to date(4 trips) :soon: Mike P 06-12-2006, 06:42 PM The day after a storm can be interesting. I left 7 rigs--6 rigged Sluggos and a jig--behind last Thursday night. I was hanging up in places I usually never hang. Funny thing--Wednesday night, during the height of the blow, the water was clean as a whistle. Not even weeds. 3 tide changes and a wind shift later---junk city  Goose 06-12-2006, 07:05 PM Thats what turns me off about that freakin place,,,not only do I have to drive 30 mintues each way but end up donating jigs ,,some with skins...thats for the richman fisherman. gone fishin 06-12-2006, 07:17 PM Jigged it today My score 2 fish one jig! Lots of lettuce floating and a lot of junk still. Water was pretty clean considering the trafic it had Sunday. A-hole to P-hole at the ditch.:realmad: "uffah!!" 06-12-2006, 08:37 PM What is on the bottom that hangs everybody up?? gone fishin 06-12-2006, 09:01 PM uffah......There upon resides a special god that traverses the bottom of the "ditch" from end to end. His specific job is to effectivly grasp each and every piece of lead, coated or uncoated, dressed with animal or synthetic attire and hold on until the fisherman on the other end of the line has completed his or her expletives and strenght trying to salvage a lure or a few bucks and breaks off leaving another chunk of lead. Lining the otherwise rocky bottom with lead, plastic, wood and all sorts of materia used in luring the mighty striped bass:devil: . The god also has a few gremlin friends that help, such as Lobsta traps, huge weeds, mussel beds, discarded rope, humongus starfish and other heavy objects. Added to all that the current runs so fast one cannot salvage a lure due to errant casting or if the almighty srtiped bass decides to wrap you around his favoritwe boulder!:devil2: striprman 06-12-2006, 09:15 PM uffah......There upon resides a special god that traverses the bottom of the "ditch" from end to end.
