my wife says the definition is: A jerk on the end of a line, waiting for a jerk from the other end of the line...:hs:

I like this one, better tho:
http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/SURFCASTING

I think it's just casting from shore, artificial, or bait.. either way, your casting something into the surf

eeling is bait fishing isnt it?? is #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& not a surfcaster? I think he is a very good one.

Tossing a chunk at high noon off the beach and sitting in a lawn chair is surfcasting too.

Minature golf is still golf isnt it ?? :hihi:

If it makes you feel good calling yourself a surfcaster when baitfishing then more power to you. Both surfcasters and baitcasters are fishermen.
I also agree, not the same.
#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& is an above average fisherman.

Boy, does this topic ever bring back some fond memories of a long ago, far away place :D :hihi:

Dougie and his dog Lughead expound on what constittes a REAL surfcaster, and a 100 page flame war erupts.

Some familiar names in there, before mellow middle age set it ;)

Ah, the good old days :grins:

I have to respectfully disagree.

Fishing with live bait or working a dead eel thru the rocks is in no way shape or form in the same category as sitting on yer a$$ holding a rod with lead and a chunk on the end of the line.

Miniature golf IS NOT real golf.

And #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& does not exist anymore, it's Bunkerman now.:hihi:

but if you cast your bunker head into the surf are you not surf casting?

what about the guys who bounce squid in the spring with as little lead as possible- that is an almost lost art.

am i fly fishing if i drop a deciever off of a wooden egg??

I guess it's all surfcasting, it's just some of us are more hardcore than others. I gotta admit though, I have become somewhat of a surfcasting snob hanging out on this board, but I have also caught a lot more fish....
I know it's wrong, but I always kind of laugh at the guys that are showing up at 9am when I am on my way home and have enjoyed some good pre-dawn fishing. But then I remember, hey, they get out when they can, and it's all about fun and relaxtion, not how hardcore you are...
not everyone can be as crazy as all of us and wake up at 2am!

TattooBob,

I wonder. Bait and lures in the surf, different models of the same gear (rod & reel), same cast into the surf, slightly differemt terminal tackle.

Do you really feel any less the surfcaster when you are out lobbing seaworms than when tossing wood? Or does it matter if you use a conventional reel or a spinning reel?

Granted, lures require more effort to keep them working/moving, and arguably more skill to be successful, but aren't both just slightly different means to the same end, often in the same environment? Not much more than a little variation in tools. Often the choice between which technique to use is no more than one of looking at the conditions and playing the odds. A time and place for both.

In the end, all that matters is that you enjoy yourself, and don't bother others who are trying to do the same. I agree with the post above, not everyone is as obsessed by the striper fever as to get up at 2 AM, and they go when they can, all the power to them. I myself have been up keeping those unholy hours too much lately and havingn trouble seeing straight, sorry if I ramble a little, sometimes still up at 2 Am and fishing from the previous day, sometime just starting out on a new one, tend to fish when I can until I just about drop.

I like to avoid googans whether they have on bait or lure as they are just another hazard. My caution to all is to be careful lest you become an elitist, just do what you like best, and enjoy the time you have to do it.

baitfishing is definitly surfcasting.
when you are fishing bait from the surf, you dont consider yourself surfcasting?

Well I find that in different areas or beaches it takes different ways to catch fish and I will use what ever it takes, Sea Worms, Sand Eels, chunks, rubber, plastic, wood, live lining, Live eels, rigged eels . what ever it takes. the whole idea of asking was I was talking to someone and he was telling me it was all surfcasting which is true, but plug fishing is plug fishing, eel fishing is eel fishing, and so on. to me surf casting is a term to explain all of the above, if that makes any sence

Is anyone really a "Surfcaster" on those nights or days when there is not a breath or air and no swell?????? Maybe the better term would be "Landcaster"
