Also have someone good give you one-on-one instruction. It'll help. S\\'E 06-22-2006, 07:37 PM Maybe hook up with the Striper Moon guys. Very generous and giving crew when it comes to help and info. Check out www.stripermoon.com and try and hook up with them on one of the Tuesday night fishing get togethers. Always a good time. Someone will likey help you there or take the time at another point to help you with casting. It will also be free and far more educational then any DVD or book. pmueller 06-23-2006, 07:40 AM Books are good your $$ will be better spent on periodic lessons. After that, practice your heart out. jeffsod 06-24-2006, 09:38 AM Joan Wulffs Dynamics Of Fly Casting I believe you can get it in DVD format. Joan has been helping people with their fly casting for a very long time! baldwin 06-24-2006, 10:01 AM Get the videos, books, hook up with some good casters and /or take a few lessons, then... For an entire season, leave the spinning rod home, only use the fly rod. Beginning fly rodders, when confronted with obstacles such as wind, extreme darkness, etc tend to default to their spinning rods. Taking only the fly rod will teach you to use it in all conditions effectively. You won't have an alternative. This will improve your skill tremendously, in a single year. Learn to cast low and sidearm in the wind, and turn backwards and release the line on the backcast. Learn to tell by feel of the resistance and diameter of the line how much line you have out. Feel and sound (slight whistle) will tell you when you have weed on your fly or the hackle is fouled around the hook. Follow this advice, and I guarantee that you'll soon become a proficient fly fisherman. jeffsod 06-24-2006, 05:06 PM By far one of the most important casting tricks you need to learn is to be able to release the cast backwards so when you are confronted with winds coming at your casting arm you can still fish a spot without getting a new fly earring. I use this all the time in the salt. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
