View Full Version : well...
I am a proud new owner of a '71 mako 19.
Anyone have one?? I know that the transoms are prone to rot, and the decks can go bad, but what are the major things to look for??
oh yeah.. the steering is frozen solid.. gotta change all the control cables. :musc:
Raven 06-21-2006, 09:20 PM that's incredible....
congrats Nebe....
oh shoot excuse me.
Captain Nebe
I have wanted one of these since i was 10
quick decision 06-21-2006, 10:01 PM Welcome to the group. My name is QD and I am a boataholic...hi qd
I am happy for you, but in the same breath I feel bad for you. Its all over from here on.
BigFish 06-21-2006, 10:20 PM Another surfcaster jumps ship!
thefishingfreak 06-21-2006, 10:25 PM AYE'......
who left the door open
bluzjamer 06-21-2006, 11:47 PM Big hole in water that we toss money into. So why did I just buy another one. I got nervous on Acquasports, Prolines, and Mako because most had the transom replaced. Who knows why.
I bought another bayliner, never had a problem with the last one.
Oh and did I mention, when you get older you just have to have a portapotti!!!!
I hate getting older.
oh yeah.. the steering is frozen solid.. gotta change all the control cables. :musc:
I have the displeasure of telling you I have suffered every steering issue known to boaters.
Will help, but need details.
crash 06-22-2006, 07:14 AM oh yeah.. the steering is frozen solid.. gotta change all the control cables. :musc:
At least you know that now, I was on a boat when the cable snapped and it was horrible. Congrats on the boat, that is one of my all time favorite hulls, super-fishable, small enough to tow and launch, big enough to be comforatable outside the bay. What kind of motor?
Fishpart 06-22-2006, 08:32 AM Congratulations..
When will the Boathog lures be coming out???? :hidin:
vineyardblues 06-22-2006, 08:49 AM Congrats Nebe,
Hope you have lot's of money !

Homerun04 06-22-2006, 09:13 AM Sweet Eben.....hail me on channel 69....Saucey.....
MakoMike 06-22-2006, 10:22 AM Eben,
My condolances :rotf3: Now you'll understand the true meaning for boat = Break out another thousand!
MrHunters 06-22-2006, 10:34 AM Don't let them scare you. (smaller boats 19 and under) are relatively cheap to maintain. Initial cost and (if TLC is needed) but hey....Your on the water and nothing beats that.
Hope the motor isnt of the same vintage however ;)
taJon 06-22-2006, 10:54 AM They are nice, a friend of mine has one with a 90 honda and it rides pretty nice. Congrats
ktugboat42 06-22-2006, 01:49 PM Congrats, thats a great hull design. Check out classicmako.com for all your mako needs.
reelecstasy 06-22-2006, 02:01 PM Congrats on the new ride, I hope she is good to you
tynan19 06-22-2006, 03:25 PM A few years ago. Still runs strong. New paint since. Fun boat that can get into some shallow water.
ThrowingTimber 06-22-2006, 03:43 PM Sweet I'll bring the popcorn, we dump the popcorn and watch the seagulls go nuts, and boats rush the seagulls from the distance, its a howl!!11
well... yes i know boats = $$$ and i dont have much of that laying around these days, but i am going to keep it on a trailer and use it every once in a while. Surfcasting is in my blood and will still do that most of the time.
heres some pics... the engine is a '89 evenrude 115. If i can swing it i will try to pick up a 90 honda 4 stroke- thats all i need i think...
heres some pics of the beast. AS you can see by looking at the console it needs some TLC, but I am only looking at this as a workhorse fishing boat..

Skitterpop 06-22-2006, 04:28 PM Congrats Nebe
love the layout on that boat....room to move and nice sides to lean against while you haul them in.
MrHunters 06-22-2006, 05:31 PM that is perfect :)
why honda? just curious
UserRemoved1 06-22-2006, 05:42 PM calling
why honda? just curious
no major reason.. only that i fell in love with clammer's and another friends hondas..... they are super quiet. I really dont know much about the 4-stroke market..
what would you throw on the back of a mako 19??
Fishpart 06-23-2006, 07:19 AM Eben, you can get serious with that boat, the Clam Handle on the console is there for a reason//////. I'm sure you'll have her up tight in no time :D..
vineyardblues 06-23-2006, 07:28 AM As I always say,,,,,,,your buying the motor not da Boat.
The boat is free :scream:
Have fun and becarefull
likwid 06-23-2006, 07:48 AM no major reason.. only that i fell in love with clammer's and another friends hondas..... they are super quiet. I really dont know much about the 4-stroke market..

Yamaha 90 imo.
Little more reliable than the hondas in my experience if maintained.

I just picked up a DF70 Suzuki pushing an 18' bay boat. Absolutly love the motor...Keep thinking it stalls at idle. Filled up two weeks ago (3 trips a week) and the gas needle barely has moved.
The dealership stocks Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda motors so I asked what was the prefered motor you are putting on boats. His response was, "the mechanics love the suzuki's because they are never in the shop for major repairs." I think they push a little less torque than yammi or honda but they are also the best price out of the three. That being said a 90-115 (same block) would suit you just fine AND you can't beat their warranty...(5 years) or three year with some sort of rebate. :bl:
Thats just my experience though... in no way have I earned a respected opinion yet :)
Raven 06-23-2006, 11:17 AM but ya need to talk -> money
taJon 06-23-2006, 11:36 AM hpdi 115 or so any make
RIJIMMY 06-23-2006, 02:04 PM holy crap Nebe! This actually means you can fish in the daylight! I'll be doing the same thing in a year or two! Congrats and good luck with it!
rhodyflyguy 06-23-2006, 02:07 PM 115 suzuki 4-stroke, yup.
i had the exact same year/boat up until this winter when I sold her and bought new.
i would reccomend suzuki 140 for a 4 stroke, or if you like spending some serious $$$ a would consider a 2 strok, get the etec 150.
i have a friend with a '69 19' with a yam 90 4 stroke and it could use more power. it is not a light boat...
I know a lot about your boat. would be happy to help whenever you need it, shoot me a PM.
Clammer 06-23-2006, 04:09 PM WTF have I been //
good luck with the rig //but its ganna be a bitch dragging all over them/there rocks you/all crawl on :hidin:

good point. 4 strokes are known for producing less hp then they say they do. look at the 225 yammie, it only produces 205 HP. also they have less torque then comparable 2 strokes
Bill L 06-23-2006, 07:46 PM Eben, are you out of your freekin mind? :conf:
Eben, are you out of your freekin mind? :conf:
yes
Bill L 06-23-2006, 09:11 PM have fun, nice ride :wiggle:
bluzjamer 06-25-2006, 09:38 AM Nice article in the ProJo. Good luck, should be upgrading that mako soon.
Thanks :D
I think i am going to keep this boat for a while...
hey ZacS, how many GPH were you getting with your boat?? 3? 4?
6-7gph running 25 kts on a 2000 150 evinrude ficht.
RIROCKHOUND 06-25-2006, 01:02 PM 4 stroke go with the 'zuki.. everyone I know with one loves them
the r/v has a 200hp Merc that goes pretty good, 9-10gph, 25ft at 24kts...
OK i have 2 questions...
1- how much does a 115 suzuki go for these days????
2- how much fuel would i save with a 4-stroke vs. a 2 stroke???
like i said, i would reccomend the 140HP zuke, but you would do ok with the 115. From what I hear, you would save 50% in fuel if you went 4 stroke with the zuke or 2 stroke with the etec.
the 115hp costs around 7K. 140 around 8K. etecs are considerbably more, i think over 10k for the 150hp.
figure another grand to install it. you could do it yourself, i have done it twice, but it is a pain in the ass, and i paid for the service the last time....
taJon 06-26-2006, 06:24 AM the new hpdi 2 strokes are more fuel efficient than a 4 stroke. it is a trade off now. the biggest difference is maintanence intervals and how oil is added.
Interesting..
I am quickly learning that boats = $$$$
a new engine will have to wait till next year or maybe the year after...
All i know is I cant wait to put her in the water
RIROCKHOUND 06-26-2006, 08:15 AM Call and order seatow or safesea now... good peace of mind at 120 bucks....
then we shall go catch fluke and basses till our arms fall off....
Sluggoslinger 06-26-2006, 08:33 AM Mako's are great boats. I have a 215 with a honda 150 on it. It is slow as balls but its also a tank. This boat really takes the rough stuff well.
Congrats! Classicmako.com is a great referance site for ya.
IMO go with more power. You'll get a longer life out of the motor if you aren't working it so hard during its life. I just learned the hard way and I'd do anything to change my 150 for a 225 (except pay for it)
MrHunters 06-26-2006, 08:36 AM new 2 strokes are as efficient as 4 strokes but are pretty expensive.... Most 2 strokes need dealer maintence after 300 hrs where 4 strokes are usually 100-200... My dealer said the alarm will go off at 100 hrs. but just to bring it in real quick and at 200 hours we will do the maintence. DF 60-70 price out at 5-7K with controls and install so im guessing the 90-115 tier are somewhere 8-10 ish.(suzuki im talking)
Springtides 06-26-2006, 11:03 AM guarentee is super. Good luck with the new ride.
JohnR 06-26-2006, 11:24 AM Best three sites for you to go to for information are ClassicMako.com and ClassicSeacraft.com and Continuouswave (Whalers). Just about all the info on doing old boats you could possibly need...
taJon 06-26-2006, 11:32 AM You should look at leftovers or hpdi used engines. Alot of people still want the 4 strokes, so there are some out there.
taJon 06-26-2006, 11:37 AM The two strokes do have advantages over the 4's.
1. longer maintenance intervals
2. more torque :D
3. better fuel efficiency in lots of cases
4. they weigh less, usually 1/3 less on larger motors
Pete_G 06-26-2006, 05:17 PM Sweet I'll bring the popcorn, we dump the popcorn and watch the seagulls go nuts, and boats rush the seagulls from the distance, its a howl!!11
The Pringles Blitz we used to call it. I might like Popcorn Blitz even better though. :D
big jay 06-26-2006, 05:34 PM popcorn sounds good - I was reading another site where a couple of "rockstars" were giving lessons on finding birds with radar and running them down - just the type of crap I love (esp come tuna time). Somebody else came up with a great recipe to counteract this involving oatmeal, a cup of bunker oil, and not so cryptic messages over the vhf. Bet their sweet arses I'm breaking that out this season.
-sorry to add to the highjack -- great boat eben, we had a 19' mako about the same vintage when I was a little kid - wish I had it myself now.

about 12 years ago me and my dad dumped a 10 lb bag of popcorn right at the hairpin turn at brenton point.......... If i only had a camera. A dude in a moped came burning around the corner and hit 3 gulls at once. we were lucky no one got hurt, but man oh man what a trip :D
Boat update- hull has been compounded to a mirror shine, teak has been cleaned.. engine wont start and i am ready to sell it :hihi:

Not counting all the women walking down Thames, there's few things I miss more then rental moped accidents at the old 561 Thames Edition of the Saltwater Edge.
The rental place was just 100 yards or so up the street and they always seemed to hit cars, each other, flower pots, fire hydrants, mail boxes, etc on a monthly basis. I loved it.
That and tossing a dead eel out into the street was always good for a laugh...
ahh the old dead eel in the street. thats almost as good as the quarter epoxied to the curb :hihi:

"uffah!!" 07-01-2006, 06:55 PM "E-TEC" thats what you need eben. Best 2-stroke on the market. AND the lightest of any of the new 2 or 4 strokes.Less weight, better economy. Thats the name of the game now!!!
varnish varnish varnish. :hihi:
nope.. I oil my teak with bunker oil :usd:
Uffa you use the eels yet??? Im counting on you for the next surfhog 50 from the surf :hihi:

Nope, haven't used them YET!! The last big one was with one of F-18
eels. About 30", got it 3 ft from the boat and those cheep-a$$ swivel I used let go. Now its no more swivels, clips,or anything, just tie direct to the hook.(Although I do inject Menhaden Oil).
