The mosquitoes have been unbelievable the past few nights… I think a lost of pint of blood on Wednesday night.

What’s the preferred mosquito repellant, other than a stiff wind?

I think anything with Deet, although I hate to use it as if it gets on your hands and then onto your lures and line and rod and reel, it could give off a scent that turns off fish ...

I have also found this stuff called White Mountain Repellent - got it at Surfland and it has citronella and that kind of stuff, so I will give that try, but have the deep woods off (sportsman's style with 40% deet) as backup just in case.

In South Florida, there's a small back-woods store in Everglades City that we would stop in when we went fishing in the Everglades -- mosquitos there are so bad they would fly up your nose, in your ears, etc., etc. -- that had a spray that had a plain white lable on it, but it was 100 percent deet. It was sick, in fact it melted my foul weather gear when it dropped out of the bag onto my gear ... but when these nasty creatures are so bad, you need something to keep them away.

Off to Maine all weekend for a FIELD TRIAL, Loaded for Bear with the Sprays.

Redlite, TonyO, and myself donated three pints of o+ each a couple nights ago. Had to drive a couple miles with all the windows open to flush them out of my vehicle on the way home. The DEET be occupying one of the slots in my bag for a while. Wind didn't help either, just pissed them off.

The bloodusckers were nasty last night....didnt seem so bad once I got my knees wet but on shore was brutal.
They say that DEET will melt mono, so be careful if you are using mono or mono leaders.
Picked up one of those ExOfficio/Bug Off caps the other day. Some swear by 'em but I keep forgetting it at home.

We try to cover as much skin as possible. When its hot , a long sleeved cotton rugby shirt works well. that still leaves your hands and you head.

I like some stuff called deep Woods off. Comes in a green can instead of the normal orange Off can. The best stuff was a Cutters that came as a stick , like a deodorant stick. you rubbed it on so it was good for the face without getting it in your mouth and eyes.

When its a little cooler , i wear a hooded sweatshirt. that protects my head except for the face. i apply the bug repellant to the rim of the hood , all the way around. that seems to keep the skeeters from going near my face.

Its not good to be "Loosing a pint of blood" to mosquitos. they carry lots of disease so there's more than the annoying itch to worry about.

In one of the more recent consumer reports, they rated bug sprays. They tested a lot of different brands and Deep Woods Off Sportsman
(40% deet it think) was the best. But they concluded that the more deet a product has the better it works. The products with deet alternative barely did anything.

I found some white label can at wal-mart that is 100% deet and cost half as much as the rest with comparable deet. %$%$%$%$ will give you skin cancer, but at least you won't itch.

Try a dryer sheet under your hat.... it works. Skin so Soft also works pretty well.

I usually cover-up to the point where I don't need mosquito-spray but this past week was unbearable.

bens tick and insect repellent in the orange bottol,this stuff was made for the back woods of maine. the water based formula has 30% deet in it and i have not got bitten once while having it applied.make sure to put it on at home and wash your hands after this stuff does not wear off easly

I got crushed too teh other night. I thinks its a reult of all the rain, lots of puddles for breeding grounds

well I like det and a good cigar or cigarette...

and it seem to me that those lil vampires are more viloent near the ocean than on a lake or pond..

I guest the salt makes them mean...

Pretty much describes my experiment with Skin-so-Soft. It kept gnats away, at least until it got fully absorbed. Also worked on those annoying black flies. But it didn't faze skeeters one bit.

100% deet....wally world....4 bux....works great....I didnt know it would kill me though

Cut your wrist, fill a soda bottle, and keep it in the freezer for transfusions. Leave it out to thaw while you're out fishing.

Too much DEET makes me feel like Rod Carew in that All-Star game when he swallowed his chewing tobacco. I try to hit the hat and shirt with the bug spray and a little on the back of the neck. Based on this thread - picked up some Cutter Advanced and will try it out. Should have bought a mask and snorkel with all the rain currently coming down. The no-see-ums were out the other night on the Merrimack - hope this stuff works for them too.
