View Full Version : How would you Rate June -so far ?
fcap60 06-25-2006, 05:55 PM just curious how people are doing generally, (no spot burning please) and how you would rate June 2006 ?
For me, from Shore- so far, the season has below avg. with a few respectable bass, very few bluefish, and very little bait.
No shortage of mosquitoes, though.
BigFish 06-25-2006, 05:58 PM Dog days came early I fear....at least where I hang out!:bc: Then again I have been away half the month!:wall:
Slingah 06-25-2006, 06:02 PM locally for me it's been a dinkfest...and no baitfish.....I usually spend more time down the cape..but have not been motivated to drive.
Ive been fishing close to everyday...and would rate the fishing about a 5
tattoobob 06-25-2006, 06:05 PM So-so, I haven't been out much. so far alot of 24 to 32 inch fish
RIJIMMY 06-25-2006, 06:31 PM Terrible for me.
basswipe 06-25-2006, 06:38 PM Simply put...crap.
But its gonna get better. After today I KNOW its gonna get better.
Karl F 06-25-2006, 06:46 PM ditto..
A special Thanks to Flap, if not for his kind offer of a skiff ride, the whole month would have been a disappointment.
Weird month, from the outercape beaches.
Found bait, and fewer than normal seals, but not a tap, the other night, saw one dink taken.
Earlier in the month, had plentiful fish, but... all small, for me.
Some decent size fish (20-30 pounders) were taken on the beach, by some. Definatley a Strange June on the cape.
Read about large in NJ and Rhody, and seen some large boat fish here on the cape.
nightfighter 06-25-2006, 06:50 PM No size what so ever. One night of forty dinks in a two hour span. Other than that....too many skunks. Hoping to turn the tide on Cuttyhunk starting Friday.
shadow 06-25-2006, 06:56 PM been very slow, one of the worst years I'v had in the 7 years I'v been fishing.got a few ok fish but noting to get happy about.
crash 06-25-2006, 07:51 PM Not good, at least I can't say I didn't try. still haven't caught a yellow-eyed sea rat yet. The benefit of the slow fishing is that I spend way more time looking for new surf spots.
fcap60 06-25-2006, 07:54 PM Well, this may just be the most honest post I've read yet.
UserRemoved1 06-25-2006, 08:03 PM Call me Thursday sweetie we will fish that SPOT we both like :grins:

Raider Ronnie 06-25-2006, 08:14 PM Only one word to describe this June,
WET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wall:
Finaddict 06-25-2006, 09:16 PM As far as numbers are concerned, it's been pretty decent for me ... but in numbers of size fish, nothing close to what I did last year or any of the prior six or more years. I've enjoyed it, but now it will turn around  in five days ... go Cutty ...
Roseneath 06-25-2006, 10:27 PM For me, June has been great. Not too many skunks, but the fish have been short or skinny (and too often - both). Am still at the base of my learning curve, but each season that passes is better than the last.
Everyone says, put your time in and things will get better. They're correct. It takes time... months, years, and I'm sure decades, but every time out is a learning experience whether you catch fish or not (hopefully you catch)
Switched over to eels tonight (I rarely use eels) and dropped a huge fish after about thirty seconds of muscling her away from some rocks. It took about 10 minutes for me to collect myself, take a deep breathe and starting fishing again... good thing I did :uhuh:
It just keeps getting better.
Clammer 06-26-2006, 02:37 AM The best Ive had in years //// all large / Not even fishing schoolies /which is my fun .............
Biteme 06-26-2006, 06:10 AM :btu: The best in years. Yesterday 23# on top, 106 keepers for the year!
The Dad Fisherman 06-26-2006, 07:11 AM Up until this past weekend its been terrible....I hadn't caught a fish in 2 weeks and before that it was all micro-schoolies.
piemma 06-26-2006, 07:21 AM June has been slow. May was the best May I ever had with a lot of high teen fish and quite a few mid 20s mixed in. June has been slow with a mid to high teen fish every few nights but no consistency to the pattern. SoCo has been very slow for 2 weeks. Despite what you hear from a select few, the surf scene in Narragansett has been essentially dead. My patrner and I have fished all the usual spots for the last 3 weeks just about one tide every night. We have a few decent fish to show for it but have put in, literally, over 100 man-hours of effort.

paul
I agree
soco has been tough fishing. May was a good month as far as # and weight. June just slowed right down. Decent fish length wise, no stomachs. speed racers at thier finest.
a lot of hours in as well for a couple of decent fish. LAthough I do like this weeks tides the best for us. hopefully something will turn on
june has blown for me, but thats because i havnt been out that much... Just too busy with work, kid and rubber..
The Iceman 6 06-26-2006, 08:06 AM June has been respectable for me in CT with one very good boat session in the mix...

Good to hear its not just me. Early may through about June 6 was one of the best in recent memory. Lots of 17-25# fish and not many smalls.Mostly canal and Gansett.32# was my best so far this year and was caught on memorial day. All surf fishing.Last two/three weeks its like someone flipped the switch to off.Five hours last night in soco for one scuffed eel and partner had a pirahna. The boats on the other hand, are experiencing business as usual.
shadow 06-26-2006, 08:55 AM fished a spot in soco last night that should be full of bass right now, fished most of the tide for two fish 12,and 14# the sad part is that was a good night lately, this spot in the past on the new moons has always been hot, hot, hot.Of curse lobster pots right where the fish like to hang does not help any.:rocketem:
Addicted 06-26-2006, 09:15 AM My best june in years. Lots of fish in the 20-26 in. range.
Four keepers for the season.
Pete_G 06-26-2006, 09:27 AM Probably the best June ever for me with a lot of good fish.
But, I paid for it. I didn't take any nights off except one so there were a lot of nearly sleepless nights. Now I'm paying for it with a spectacular sore throat and a beat up body.
Went out last night around PJ and Narry and fished hard with eels from 10 to 1AM and got the skunk. This was after fishing Newport from 5 to 9pm and only producing a couple blues. So much for the "new moon in June"...
edit:
Thought I'd edit this post a bit. If I didn't happen upon a quality school of fish for a week or so in Newport early in the month and then get a tip from Striperhound for the 2nd half, I'd rate June as fairly disappointing.
likwid 06-26-2006, 09:31 AM 2 big spots have been par for course.
the cape has been productive if you're willing to drive.
slightly local'er areas have alot of fresh short fish... which seem a bit late? or they've had the feed bag on elsewhere before moving up.
Pete_G 06-26-2006, 09:40 AM I'm still thinking that a lot of the June bass we usually enjoy (especially Narragansett, B-tail, and Newport guys) are Upper Bay dropouts. And with all the bunker this year many bass are still VERY happy in the Upper Bay. I don't think water temp matters, if there's food, they're not leaving.
The past few years, fishing the Upper Bay in the boat, there has always been a very noticeable exit by the bass beginning in late May and June, but that didn't seem to really happen this year.
Maybe the next few weeks will improve if they finally eat all that bunker up there.
likwid 06-26-2006, 09:43 AM Pete, if they're being fed they have no reason to move.
And with Narr Bay putting the lockdown on the bunker boats there's alot more "larger" bait isn't there?
Mike P 06-26-2006, 09:45 AM Flap is right---the Cape is becoming more and more a boaters' game. There are plenty of fish in both CCB and BB. For both numbers and size. Sand eels in CCB, pogies and now signs of smaller bait (silversides) in BB. Few of those fish are leaving the feed in the bays to cruise a Canal that's on the sparse side (to put it mildly) bait-wise.
libassboy 06-26-2006, 09:47 AM Its been ok but i havent been out as much as i usually am for June. Finally got some fish over 20lbs, but nothing real big yet.
likwid 06-26-2006, 10:05 AM Another observation is the fact that there are TONS of small sand eels elsewhere.
You could walk to shore on em.
(Although the spot in question you could walk to shore anyhow.)
cheferson 06-26-2006, 11:12 AM May was great , june has been slow.
kippy 06-26-2006, 11:17 AM June has been slow for me so far..although I haven't fished as much as I usually do. I hope things turn on this week.
RIROCKHOUND 06-26-2006, 11:17 AM May was great , june has been slow.
Yup.....

Maybe the next few weeks will improve if they finally eat all that bunker up there.Pete you are right, ask the guys fishing the bay in boats there doing great the fish will stay in the deeper cooler water of the bay as long as there is food, also N.J. is still holding large fish that is usually up here by now once again by food not water temps. The fish I kept last night had one little baby scup in it's gut thats it.
MotoXcowboy 06-26-2006, 11:44 AM  is how I feel about this year's june. :sleeps:
last night sucked in SoCo for me..mosquitos were out fishing hard though. Gonna give the R.O.W. boat a shot this evening..in desperate hopes a big girl comes in with the big tide..
Striperhound 06-26-2006, 01:25 PM I caught some qaulity fish in June but overall it was disappointing. It was a hunt and peck game for sure. My "for sure" spots didnt produce and others I hadnt fished in quite some time did. Just when you think you got it figured out, you realize you don't. :bl:
hooked 06-26-2006, 01:40 PM I liked May better. I've caught lots of stripers during June, lots of small stripers. I thought a 12" striper wasn't supposed to hit a 9" sluggo. I suck.
chris L 06-26-2006, 02:54 PM have been fishing in the freshwater all year . my first trip in the salt will be this weekend . and hopefully for the one day in June I will fish . I hope I can catch enough to say June was a berry berry good monf for me
partsjay 06-26-2006, 03:15 PM June was somewhat slower than usuall.....had a couple of ok days with 1 great day......not from lack of trying....Im looking forward to this week and next weekend.
Simply put, this has been one of my worst seasons in recent memory - June included. I'm definitely snakebitten this year.
stiff tip 06-27-2006, 04:20 AM slow no big fish lots of dinks no fish on the beach, slow at the canal no no no bait no bass
quick decision 06-27-2006, 06:03 AM This is a depressing post to read.:bc:
RIJIMMY 06-27-2006, 07:49 AM This is a depressing post to read.:bc:
