View Full Version : Freshwater Bass Gift Idea?
My friend/co-worker is having a surprise 30th birthday party and I was hoping to get him a little freshwater tackle. He’s just starting out and it seems like he fishes mostly with bait but I’d like to get him a couple lures/crankbaits or something like that. I don’t know the first thing about bassin’ in freshwater so I’m hoping someone could make a few recommendations. Looking for stuff that I could pick up at Wallyworld or #^&#^&#^&#^&’s.
Thanks for your help.
chris L 07-27-2006, 03:06 PM get him one of them damn stupid singing bass plagues they sell . every wrangler should have one .
when I was lg mouth bass fishing . my favorites were jitterbug , torpedos, zara spook , rubber worms in black and pumpkinseed , spinner and buzz baits . I havent been in a long long time so stuff has probably changed some .
wheresmy50 07-27-2006, 03:08 PM My favorites: 6" sluggos, shallow shad raps, heddon tiny torpedos. For smallmouth, those yum crayfish should be illegal.
partsjay 07-27-2006, 03:31 PM broken-back rapala...black over gold....spinnerbaits....tournament frogs.
fishsmith 07-27-2006, 03:50 PM anything Charlie Moore :bl2:
The Dad Fisherman 07-27-2006, 03:55 PM Rapalas, Especially the Suspending kind. I am a big fan of the Senkos for Rubbah as well as the 4" and 6" Sluggos
Hula Poppers and Zara Spooks and Puppies too.
All those lures are great, but the most easy & proof way to get Freshwater bass both Lg & Sm mouth are Senkos. Wally world has the tiki worm or wave worms. They catch fish...a lot of fish. You don't even have to move them.
Rick Ackley 07-27-2006, 06:25 PM Early morning, nothing beats a buzz-bait or a spinnerbait, white in color, after the sun comes up, dark jigs with a trailer tossed right into the heavy stuff, and as the sun dips away, anything of the surface that makes noise, the ol' jitterbug still catches pre-dark fish all the time
Senkos are great in red flake motor oil or any dark color. Chug bugs, spinner baits in white and yellow, jerk baits, and ya gots to love rattle traps. I kinda gave up tournament fishing and my box weighs a ton. Lures catch fisherman.....not fish.
Basser 07-27-2006, 06:54 PM Get him some 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG hooks to go with those 6 " Senkos.
eelman 07-27-2006, 07:05 PM Get him a saltwater rod and shoiw him what "Real" bass are like:buds:
RIJIMMY 07-27-2006, 09:17 PM Big Mouth Billy Bass
Clogston29 07-28-2006, 05:58 AM If he's starting out go with the easy stuff to fish. Perch colored floater rapalas and daredevil spoons.
eelman 07-28-2006, 07:09 AM Hard to please a fisherman, the best gift in my opinion is a gift certificate to a tackle shop!
Clogston29 07-28-2006, 07:12 AM Who wouldn't want this :hihi:
5 String Bass 07-28-2006, 05:48 PM My daughter gave me a window sticker for my car. It has a realistic plastic largemouth bass head and it is made to look like it is "bursting" through the glass. It is made by the same company that makes the basball stick-ons that look like a baseball is lodged in your window. Frankly, I dont think I am going to put it on, but it is funny as hell.
A good gear idea is the watch battery operated light up bobbers. Those are the best damn thing you can use at night.
Gift certificate is always a good idea because everyone always has there favorite baits or whatever. But if your gonna do a lovely bass gift basket I would go with the 6" senkos for sure. and at $6 a bag I know I wouldnt mind getting some for my b-day! rootbeer, Brown with green fleck, black w/ blue fleck, dark brown, Dark purple with FINEgreen fleck\KILLER but I havent been able to find them latelty):eek5:
:thanks:
I'm heading to #^&#^&#^&#^&'s now.
#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&,
I tried to get him to see the light with saltwater and he continues to persue those tiny fish so I don't trust him to buy his own stuff for that reason
Johneeed 07-30-2006, 05:23 PM well since I only night fish....both types of water....
I'd say Black Jitterbugs for top waters the 5/8 oz ones and with out the rattles and a 3/0 oz blk spinnerbait with a colorado or indiana blade....(a Big blade)
I went with some senkos, gami hooks, a suspending rapala and a skitterwalk. the skitterwalk murders schoolies so I figured I'd grab the freshwater version for him. they went over well. thanks again for the help.
Just got a call from this guy today. Killed em this morning on the senkos. Thanks again for the recommendation.
