Orleans firefighters douse Jeep ablaze on off-road trail
CAPE COD TIMES
ORLEANS - A vehicle fire yesterday afternoon shut down access to the off-road trail to Nauset Beach for a short time.
An older-model Jeep Cherokee caught fire at Exit 1 on the trail at around 1 p.m.
Orleans Fire Department personnel along with Orleans park staff and police responded in four-wheel-drive vehicles, fire Capt. William Quinn said.
Vehicle fires on the off-road trails are hard to fight because of the time it takes to reach them, he said. Vehicles are usually fully involved before firefighting equipment arrives.
The firefighters were able to use a portable pump that sent seawater onto the fire. (Published: August 3, 2006)

My next door neighbor's kid.... everybody's OK.. cars a total...
my son happened to be driving off the beach, during it all, and saw the clouds of smoke ahead of him.. about a mile from the fire, the noticeable traces of tanny fluid dribbles in the trail, which got larger as he got closer to the remains of the cherokee.. melted the rims and tires right off .. told the story, tranny fluid pumped out, finally spraying onto something hot enuf to ignite it... hot day.. lot of boiled trannys and radiators yesterday out there.. tow company on overload...
