I have a 1973 Merc model 110, 9.8 HP that was dug out of a shed and tuned up, runs good. Problem is the prop hub appears to be spun, and I cant get the existing prop off. The prop is held on with a 5/8-inch "cap nut" (with a weird red end). The motor turns over when its turned in one direction, and it spins on the hub/clicks in the other, so I cant get the *^*&%( thing off. Anybody got any advice on removing the prop??
Thx

what if you put it in gear.... should lock it up

start at your nearest boat yards and ask to rent-beg-borrow a hub puller..looks like a metal spider,,claws slide in behind the prop and grab it from behind and a has center ring that goes over the spindle [threaded shaft] place the nut back on the same shaft and start to tighten ..the prop will pop off.

Sounds like its in gear. I think the prop should spin in either direction when in neutral. To get the nut off put the wrench on and put a chunk of 2X4 between the prop and the cav plate that will hold it from turning. If the shaft spins with the nut and the prop isn't moving, the hub is spun. Ive seen them burn them out with a torch (messy). there is probably a better way.

Yeah, cant even get the nut off. Because the hub is spun, I cant hold the prop to get any leverage, the spindle just spins witht the nut..... I'll see what the boatyard can do
Thx

Well, looks like last resort is to try and hold the fly wheel with a strap wrench. If that doesnt work it has to be cut off with a grinding wheel :smash:

not sure what kind of locking nut is on there? that red thingy you mentioned?? but if it's just the nut your trying to get off put it in gear and hold the flywheel..... jamb a prybar against somethin solid. like the block and flywheel teeth or the strap wrench? and give it a good jerk on the nut.
lefty loosy, righty tighty.
i bet an impact gun would zing it right off..

Impact gun :kewl:
If you don't have one, carry the motor (if it's only a 9.8 hp ) to a local garage nearby and have them use a gun on it !
