How hard is it to learn to throw one effectivly?


....Oh yeah and who can do it...I might need some lessons:smash:

If you start off with a smaller size net you should be able to pick it up fairly quick and gradually move to bigger nets if desired. i learned to throw one a long time ago and the best advise i ever got on how to throw a cast net is hold that back section of the net in your teeth and let it go right before you release it.

Capt. Al Lorenzetti has a good video out that teaches proper technique for throwing a cast net. It has some other good live bait tips also. Its available in The Fisherman mag.

I use to use one all the time in Florida.The bestway to learn is practice I never use my teeth and I can use a cast net very affectively. If you you have a nice yard practice in the grass .Cast over a tire or something .Once you get a good circle cast consistently then go try it in the water. I suggest starting with a 6' net then move up:D

Tattoo it only knocks them out you scoop them up put them in the live well and they come right back and the good thing is they now can't hear the big bass coming as you just blew their ears out:confused:

There is a ring thingie you can buy for them, one brand is called a halo, makes it MUCH easier to cast. I was casting good using one with a halo after 15 minutes of practice.

Bob - welcome to S-B, do you know where to get a "halo"? I've never heard of that before but it seems like a good idea. Personally, I have enough problems with my teeth to screw them up with a cast net...

I was told today by a friend that the largest allowed in MA. is a 6' net.unless you have a special permit. All permits are shut down and no longer being issued unless you have held a previous permit for nets.

I thought you could only dip net herring in Mass?

I believe you need a dip net in a Mass run, Cast net in open salt is OK, but then so is a Sabiki rig provided you are in a boat...

Herring can only be diped but pogies you can use a throw net.

Interesting comment on throw nets... From what Mike is saying and what I've seen before, you can't use them in runs in Mass or in BB. I was just talking to someone that lurkse here and he said that he was at a Rhody run very recently and a DEM official saw another guy about to throw a cast net and told this fellow that he can't use a throw net for herring in a run.

I had seen someone use a cast net before at a Rhody run and was very impressed by it and was about to purchase one but I guess it's not exactly legal... So I figured I'd pass that along....

The RI regs are something like max. net diameter of 24 inches for herring, at least at the NK run. There are some other details about legal nets that I can't remember specifically, but I never even considered a cast net after reading them. I use a cast net for other stuff, especially fluke food.

At any rate, the net details are on the signs posted at runs, unless some dweeb has taken them down.

Here's the '01 RI regs regarding herring and alewives and the net requirements. I think they're pretty much the same this year. A 4' x 8' seine looks like a good idea as long as it doesn't stretch more than half-way across the stream (at least that's the way I read it). The dip nets have to be 30 inches in diameter or less:

ANADROMOUS FISHERIES REGULATIONS

2.1 No person shall take more than twenty-four (24) alewives Alosa pseudoharengus or blueback herring Alosa aestivalis either singularly or in aggregate from the freshwater streams or rivers of the state in any 24-hour period. No person shall take any alewives or blueback herring from the fresh waters of the state without a valid freshwater fishing license. No person shall take any alewives or blueback herring from the fresh waters of the state on any Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday of any week.

2.2 No person shall take any alewives or blueback herring by any means other than by a hand-held and hand-operated dip net with a diameter no greater than two and one-half feet (2 1/2') or by a seine not greater than four feet (4') deep by eight feet (8') long.

2.3 No person shall erect any artificial obstruction to fish passage in any stream or in any way alter the natural stream bottom to hinder the passage of fish.

2.4 No person shall place a seine or netting more than half way across any stream or mouth or outflow of any stream.

2.5 Any person taking an alewife or blueback herring must remove it from the pond or stream and keep it in his or her possession.

2.6 No person shall take any American shad Alosa sapidissima from the fresh waters of the state.

2.7 No person shall take any smelt Osmerus mordax by any means from any stream or river in the state with the exception of the Pawcatuck River.
