View Full Version : Big Tuna Lost
Fish On 08-10-2006, 10:18 PM From this week's On The Water report:
"One sad tale that was told to Bob was from a dejected fisherman who tussled for over an hour and a half with what looked to be a grander giant, when the impatient captain practically yanked the rod out of his hands griping that it was taking too long and within 30 seconds the line parted – ouch! Well, we know that there is still at least one 1000-pound tuna out there."
Wow, don't think I could handle that. Feel bad for the guy. Certainly would never charter the same boat again.
likwid 08-10-2006, 10:25 PM capt would have gone over the side for that one.
tynan19 08-10-2006, 11:47 PM Wouldn't that be the Captn. loss of money?
MakoMike 08-11-2006, 07:02 AM Depends on the deal, on my boat all of the fish belong to the charter.
Sluggoslinger 08-11-2006, 09:22 AM Some boats give a free charter if the fish is market size and sell the fish. Maybe the captain didn't want to deal with the sale and giving the money back.
I really would not have shut up the entire ride home. I'd be sure to make it very unpleasant for him...

What would a charter do with a 600lb tuna?They can"t sell it.

I'm 99.9% sure they can. Why wouldn't they be able to sell it?
I'm pretty sure they can't, however the captain certainly can.

sorry, I read that wrong... I thoght you meant the charter captain couldn't sell it. If the people on the charter had the licence, I don't know why they wouldn't be able to sell it.
MakoMike 08-11-2006, 12:03 PM The license is a boat license, so, at least technically, they can't sell the fish. If it were me, I would offer to sell it for them for some negotiated % of the sale price.
As far as I know, individuals cannot get HMS permits, they are specifically boat dependent. However, I guess if someone with a comm permit on their boat was to catch a GBFT on a charter, they could sell it, but I have to assume that is a very rare circumstance, and it is certainly a grey area.... Why would someone with a boat and a comm permit be paying for a charter anyway?
[edit: mako mike slipped in on me... that is what i figgured.]
back to the topic of the post, Mike, have you ever heard of a Captain taking the rod from a charter saying that the fight with a Giant is 'taking too long?' Seems like a fishy story to me.... You would think the capt would want to do everything to catch the fish for the noteriety/picture op/report ink/etc...

so any fish caught doesnt go home with the customer?
RIROCKHOUND 08-11-2006, 12:31 PM No; he's saying the opposite. ALL fish go to the charter/customers...

thefishingfreak 08-11-2006, 02:45 PM it's not uncommon when a big $$ giant is on the line. for the capt/mate to boot the customer out of the way and jump on the rod.
the fish is landed, the charter is over, and the boat heads in.
either charter money is refunded or the next trip is free.
$1,000 charter,,,or $5,000+ fish
some boats will split the procedes of the sale.
Flaptail 08-12-2006, 05:57 AM Common or un-common ( I mated on a boat way back for a couple years) I would have cut his balls off. Plain and simple.
Backbeach Jake 08-12-2006, 06:22 AM When I have a fish on, you'd better keep your hands off my gear. What Flap said.
Raven 08-12-2006, 06:27 AM i'd own the boat...
big jay 08-12-2006, 04:10 PM Ever notice that every tuna broken off was a grander?
Hooper 08-13-2006, 04:35 PM Ever notice that every tuna broken off was a grander?
Right on Jay!
"I'm tellin' ya, it was a thousand if it was an ounce!":buds: Have another one...
Gotofish 08-13-2006, 08:45 PM Lost a grander (maybe even a 2 grander) today off Newport. Almost spooled my Spheros 4000 but I worked him to boatside anyway...anyway, leaderman (me) blew it and it swam off. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
On a more truthfull note, there were plenty if Bones out there for the 300 of us looking around.
