Big time... :( blues did a tune on my wood once the sun came up... threw a Cotton Cordell pencil first and nothing for the first several casts... Then whamo.. nice bass want to guess it was in the mid 20's in size but freaking strong as an OX... That fish really pushed my 9' tica and spheros 6000.... several head turns as the tide was really low to avoid the rocks and viola fish goes one way and the plug goes the other... few more casts and then i took a look at the pencil because it wasn't swimming right and it's missing the rear treble, split ring and holder...pencil split at the seam.. WTF... threw on the wood and began to cast... several blues later i decided to move because i wanted a little paint left on the pencil...

Went up another 200-300 yds and found potential... bait to boot but nothing chasing... tide is now turning and sooner or later i know it was going to be a free for all... 3 guys were on the rock i normally fish on and since it was the only spot that you could safely land a fish i asked if they wouldn't mind if i casted to their left... they said no problem and thank you for asking... 10 minutes go by and not even a nibble then one of the guys who is fishing for scup is doing an excited dance as his rod is bent over like a palm tree in 125mph winds... Something was underneath the bait as they were crammed and doing a panic on the surface.. I fanned my casts outside of the bait pod and got 1 small swirl.... So i did the "doh" cast and went right over the middle of the pod...

Just outside the edge it frothed as the pencil was spooking the daylights out of the bait, then this big black head semi popped out of the water and the pencil was gone.. I set the hook and it took off like a bat out of hell for atleast 50 or so yards(which seemed like forever but only lasted about 10 or so seconds)... It then slowed down to a slow cruise just turning the spool maybe one rotation every 4 or 5 seconds... I tried to turn it but it was like i hooked a boat... The guy on the rock took a 39" striper on a scup hook and his friend who was watching me plug said it looked like a shark... Needless to say fireline 20# is the balls as I felt as if my rod was going to break before the line...

I have caught sharks on a boat before but never had one do that before... I have set a treble in a seals neck a few years ago and it didn't swim that fast... I am stumped and disguisted at this point... I have been making wrong decessions as to what gear to take with me and it's been either overkill or way under rated...

The bass was loaded with cig mackerel...
