View Full Version : Ghost stories from the beach
piemma 08-23-2006, 09:50 AM I thought this might be a fun topic. I am sure there are tons of ghost stories from the surf guys at night.
I have a few but my best and most recent was last year at Narrow River (No this does not constitute a "spot burn" for Ghosts)
Big surf, SW 25-30, raining like buckets. I see this guy in a big floopy hat up in the dunes. I look again he's gone. I kept walking down the beach and I feel ike someone is following me. I turn around real quick and his about 20 yards in back of me....just a shadow. Snap on my light.....nothing. Now I'm getting freaked out and I don't scare easy.
I get to the River and start heading out on the bar and the guy with the floppy hat is standing on River Rock....other side of the River. I jump a big wave and look again and, you guessed it... he's gone.
I went home.

JFigliuolo 08-23-2006, 10:15 AM But a kid I took out one night was perched on a rock. I go around the point. He swears to this day, he looked behind him and there was a guy pointing over to me. He looks again, the guy was gone. He also swears he saw a girl, in a white dress, floating in the surf the same night.
Karl F 08-23-2006, 10:54 AM I can't wait for the canal guys to chime in.. the canal has lots of ghosts and ghost stories..
For me.. there is a beach in Wellfleet...There is an area there, on a New Moon, I can't be in, all the hair on the back of my neck goes up, and I get chicken skin, start to shivver, heart rate goes mental...swear the air temp drops below zero, I move 100 yards away, all good again... I thought it was me.... there is somebody else on this board, who years later, tells me he gets the same heebie jeebies there.. he then tells me this tid-bit about the location: There was a shipwreck in that area in the 1800's with a lot of sailors killed. Frozen to death in the rigging and had to be cut out. Oh, this happened on the New Moon.. Pochet, has a similar effect on me, again, on the new moon.. I read Bill Quinns book "Shipwrecks of Cape Cod".. to lear more of that Wellfleet wreck, and low and behold, there is also a story of a nasty wreck, with many killed there.. on a new moon...
Of course, you stand on a dark beach all night, depriving yourself of sleep, a lull in the action.. and the mind gets active ;)
Flaptail 08-23-2006, 12:41 PM :hidin:  Not for a 60 pounder would I ever fish that beach alone again, ever.
Finaddict 08-23-2006, 12:55 PM Occassionally walking Plum Island alone at night I get the sense that someone is behind me, hear a few voices and turn around and it is clear, nobody or anything there, continue walking, feeling gets stronger, no one there ... WTF, it was creepy ...
On another early, early morning, on the other end of the island down at Sandy Point, walking in the dark, foggy, tide is dropping, I see footprints in the sand, made just after the water left as there are small puddles in the footprints ... and I can see a shape ahead almost at a bar I was going to fish ... then the footprints disappear (remember tide is dropping and small surf almost none) the object is still there and when I reach the spot, there is no one there, shape is gone ... still dark and I get that same creepy feeling of someone in my presence but not there ...
numbskull 08-23-2006, 01:23 PM Just last night I was in a dark deserted moonscape of massive boulders when I heard a rattling in the stones behind me and turned around to see a 7ft tall god ugly green monster with one glowing eye............................................... .................................................. .................................................. ......
Thank God it was just Flap.
STREETFIGHT 08-23-2006, 01:38 PM a few weeks ago my fishing partner was out alone one night at a spot he & i fish all the time- nothing scary about this place..... tide was down so he was wading out off the beach- slight breeze in his face & hint of fog hanging over the water. he told me he looked up & see's this thing comming at him from off shore, says he has no idea what the hell it was. when he tried to put a light on it he could see it was still there and closing in on him so he starts to quicky back out of the water.... about the time he reaches the beach he puts the light back on it & its still comming right in on him..... so right about the time he says he got really freaked out it rolls on by him........ turned out to be a big ole buch of mylar ballons- he figures it was about 20 of them knoted together...... says he quit for the night not long after.

Paul,
Now we all know why you bought the boat! Beware though, that guy can walk on water too. No escape. :uhoh: The floopy hat is really his ears. I think it may be the elephant man  Keep some peanuts next to the console.
On another note, if you ever see Lanny, ask him about the night I was hurriedly walking off head of the meadow and he was walking on.He'll tell you how chickensh$#$% I am. My excuse was that I forgot the eels.
I wont name the beach but it is known to be a little mysterious lets say....
Me and hubby were fishing one night when he had enough and went for a snooze in the sand sled. So I am plugging away beach to myself and after a while I feel my hubby walk up behind me and put his hand of the small of my back like he often does....no big deal.....uh....the problem was........
HE WAS STILL IN THE TRUCK FAST ASLEEP................
Needles to say I packed in up for the night....REAL quick like....

Sorry, can't help ya there, Karl. I never had one of those experiences--not even walking thru the woods and over the tracks on the Cape side by the light of a flashlight with dying batteries.
Close encounters with critters qualify?
When I first started digging graves - it was a little spooky.
The old alky head caretaker told me, "Don't worry, they're dead."
I dug up half a person from the pelvis down one time - I guess it was either and indian or an unmarked grave - that was weird, but no complaints.
I used to have an open mind to the stuff...

last night, all night I was looking over my shoulder like a 5 year old :eyes: :err: :eek5:
And the Eyes Watch You
Its 3:00 AM on the islands east side during the dark of the moon, now mid November and not many casters about. I slowly picked my way along the cobble shore to my favorite perch near the “bass stand”. “It’s a really black night”, I said to myself. I looked toward the northeast – the eyes were watching. I switched off my neck light and was instantly blinded for 5-10 seconds until my eyes could adjust to the darkness.
Now on my rock I cast a needlefish toward the pipes. I counted in my head as I started my retrieve. On the count of “6” I felt the needle pause as if a bass had made a pass at it. I dropped the needle back by lowering my rod and the bass struck it on queue. I looked over and the eyes were watching.
As I landed the bass I glanced over my right shoulder and could vaguely make out a human form about 30 yards down the shore – don’t turn on the neck light I thought as I unhooked the bass in the darkness. Back on my perch – the eyes watching to my left and the unknown person to my right.
Nothing more from this perch – I decided to move a little to the right toward the other fisherman. He was right in a spot I liked to fish. As I walked toward him I asked him how he was doing – I got no response and was surprised to see him move further away from me. I was starting to get a little concerned. Off to my left - the eyes still watched.
Now on my new perch I peered again at the unknown angler on my right. At that point I let fly with a cast while watching him. He cast at the same time. It was then that I realized that the other caster was my own shadow.
Note: The “eyes that watch me” are in fact a reflection off the water from the Newport Bridge Lights some 20 miles distant - they are visible from Block Island’s east side. The lights and their reflection form a perfect set of eyes.
My shadow (whom I tried to start a conversation with – true story) is formed from the green navigation light off of Old Harbor Breakwater. The green light produces an eerie glow that creates a faint shadow.
I have plenty more “bump in the night” Block Island surfcasting stories. Since I fish alone most of the time my thoughts create most of them.
I fish by myself.I hate ghost story's.
I did not look at one word on this thread .
Please Stop.

Rockport24 08-24-2006, 08:16 AM great story DZ! It's so true that our minds often get the better of us, it kind of puts me at ease to hear that it sometimes happens to you sharpies too.

Thank God it was just Flap.
The flashing of sparks from carbide tipped spikes and the sudden wailing like a banshee from hell "I hate these F*ckin' rocks!!!!!'
All returns quiet once again and the only sound is "Hey George, doing anything here?":laugha:
hummy22 08-24-2006, 01:10 PM actually mine has nothing to do with the beach. but a girl that works in my company (a real head turner) asked me if i have ever experienced any abnormalties of any sort. It seems that 3 days ago as she was sleeping, she awoke to not being able to move and breathe for about 10 second. she was totally aware of what was going on but could not gain control of her body as if she was paralyzed from the neck down. In chinese customs, that is meaning a ghost is sitting on top of you. but the funny thing was, i told her certain things to do like to position her slippers in another way and to put her hair up while sleeping to balance out the yin/yang of her complexion...as i was telling her this, she showed me a bruise on her wrist and back of her shoulder. i was like WOW asking her if she could have hit her hand on a night table, but then she lifted her pant leg to show me 3 deep gashes on her leg surrounded by what looked like small scars which looked like a deep rash because of the redness. she said when she regained control of her body and got up...she discovered her leg bleeding and saw the bruises while showering. i told her not only is she being followed by a ghost but it was inflicting harm upon her. then i asked her how this came to be and she told me about a month ago, she went with 2 friends ghost hunting which they did see something strange and her 2 friends have experienced abnormalties after the visit. my advise to her was to go to a temple and pray and if she had the courage to go back to the area and make amends with whatever they encountered and offended. i wish her the best of luck as she was trembling while telling me this.

Clogston29 08-25-2006, 06:23 AM One night I was fishing the end of a cobble beach where the vertical rocks begin. At very low tides you can wade out in front of the rocks and cast from there. At this particular area there is a small cave like crevice carved out at the base of the rocks which has always struck me as kind of erie. Well I’m standing there casting for a few minutes on a very warm night and all of a sudden I feel this really damp chill come over me and a few seconds later get an overwhelming smell of pipe tobacco behind me. I wheeled around and nothing was there but I know that I smelled tobacco smoke, no doubt in my mind. This really freaked me out and I pretty much ran back to the truck and haven’t fished there again since at night and I actually got chills just typing this.
Earlier this season Luds48 and I were standing on an overlook area that looks down on this same area and we both saw what looked like a ghost right out of the movies walking on the rocks. We both agreed that something was there and had to go in for a closer look (you feel a lot more comfortable and brave when not alone). Well we only had to take a few steps closer until we could tell that it was actually a woman wrapped in a sheet walking around on the rocks while her husband was soaking bait out of site from where we were originally standing. You see some crazy stuff out there at night.
