Tattoo - I was looking at a Ford Motorsports Long Block: GT-40 heads (iron), roller cam & lifters, balanced, yada-yada - price $2400. But then I realized that this is my fishing truck and not back in the heyday of my youth when I was Autocrossing MR-2s or putting TPI350s in Regals & Camaros with my brother. Sometime ask me about converting a I4 Fiero to a hopped up V6 (I considered putting in a V8 :bo: . About a 45 hour conversion: fuel pump, cooling rails, ECM & Harness, Clutch pak, entire exhaust system, engine mounts...

Just not worth it ;)

Know any good machine shops?

A Fiero???? Who would do such a thing..... :D

Best one I have seen to date was a Toyota like mine with a 327......Hey, what are those cherry red things under there....oh it's the headers...severe smoke show with 36" #^&#^&#^&#^& Cepeks. NUTS, just plain NUTS!

I used to have an '85 MR-2. I loved that car. For some reason my landcruiser does not handle anything like it but it was terrible for hauling rods.

Those MRs were a lot of fun. I had 2 :D . And I could take on any car on a very tight road. Should have seen the look on one Vet guy's face when I was cornering inside him on the Ponkapog Trail ;) ... Oh BTW, the Supercharged MR2 with underdrive pulleys and a couple other mods ran about 175 horse :D - lost a couple hundred RPMs but picture 50% more horsepower & tourqe in the same car.....

I used to surf fish out of the Fiero (had a few mods and probably 180-190 horse) by bungie cording the rods on a roof rack for a while but I had to get "responsible" and sell it.

Well - I've been calling around - a Ford REMAN Long Block is $1400...

John a remanufactured is going to be big bucks. I checked into it for my F-250, before I decided to go with the Expedition. Why not go used, I have done it before, as long as it is not your primary mode of transportation. Try Woburn truck parts in Woburn Mass. for a used.

Specialist - I figure a "good" low mileage used motor is still going to run $700 +/- , reseal kit $100, various nic-nacs, $200 and I'm getting in the range of the long block. I'd also rather have something 0 miles with a warranty not too mention having a previously tired engine fail out on Cape Pogue or start towing a boat with it.

Of course, I'd rather have a new Expedition or Tahoe but that's after TheBetterHalf starts working again...

That's bad news John :(

I once had an MGB with a 289

A finish carpenter I know has a MGB with a 454 in it
When he ran it at the Track in Epping NH (way back when) at something like 12 seconds they got pissed and threw him off the track ,for not having the correct saftey gear or something, it was a street car, he could have been killed. Had pics in some hotrod magazine.
Tires were so wide and close together in the middle, when he laid rubba it looked ridiculous, almost one wide black mark.

john, sorry havn't really been on a lot lately. just another option for you.. if all you have is one bad hole you may get off cheap by fixing that one cylinder, new piston, rings.ect. specially if you are planning on dumping the sled in a year or so, pop in a set of new bearings, maybe an oil pump and she'll be good to go. be a lot less downtime, and a heck of alot cheaper than buying that long block. i'll do a little checking around for you and see what i can come up with for a price on a good 5.0 in case you still wanna do a swap:)

Krispy - you need a sand sled, right? So any news on the northeasterly move?

Red - I figure I'll hang onto it for a couple years and not make payments. A new long block will buy a smooth runner and some added reliability in the field, err, dunes... Plus the tow factor. So when we going fishing?

What I'd really like is to find a crate Ford Racing 5.0 motor that never made it into a sled ;)

Thanks,

John
