Heading to MV next week and it looks like there is the opportunity to run into some false albies and bonito from shore. I have never run into these fish and I'm clueless.
So, some quesitons...

1. What are the best lures to throw, sizes?
2. Light spinning tackle ok -10lb line, med stick? Do I need to go heavy?
3. Can you eat them?

Thanks!

Light tackle is good...#2 deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s in green and a teaser helps out and reel as fast as you can...:jump: and then hold on...
albies not edible....bonito are

I am out to get my first ones too. I hope these work. I have made them heavier, weighted, so I can cast them further from shore. I'd love to get one on my own stuff .Vineyardblues is going to take me right to the spot:kewl: Paul

what about leaders? I use 50lb pink ande for bass/blues. Same thing for these fish? I've seen some pics of Bonito and it looks liek they have some good teeth

I used to tie direct using 12lb BBGame mono although I would probably use PP etc with a fluro leader now. My favorite lure was always an Ava jig (007 model).

I use yozuri crystal minnows, tied direct with a moderate retrieve. everyone always told me to burn it in, but a moderate retrieve has worked wonders for me. bonito are delicious
good luck

use sweedish pimples :bounce: get the green ones. other shiny metal works well too. I use light tackle with 12# test tied direct.

vary retrieves..i usually rip em in fast..with the rod parallel to the water and snap the rod back n forth sorta like you do with sluggos.

bonito taste great..

tie direct Jim.

15lb flouro

THEY LOVE MAG DARTERS

Also try taking a tin 2-3 ounce pt.jude/ t-hex or whatever your flavor of tin is. Leave the rear hook on the tin, and take 2 feet of flouro, and run a nice sparkly fly off of that, tie it with a perfection loop so it has a good swing to it. Rip that sucker out there and retreive like you just had 19 cups of coffee  :jump:

Victor are you saying tie the fluro to where the hook is attached for the teaser? P.

I dont think he is saying that..The teaser is usually about 18 inches and the swivel to put the metal is about 24 inches...both are attached to the main line at the same place

Got a couple of shore bones this AM. No albies just yet from shore that I know of. They should be here...any day. (last season they were in full force by now in the boat but I have not got one from a boat yet either) There have been a few boat albies caught but not many.

Lighter is better with bones (generally)

PM me if you want bone details

Those are some sweet lures you make...IMO they will work great.

As far as albies go...they put on one hell of a fight from shore...esp on a 9wt fly rod.

good luck guys.

That is what I thought. Probably just misunderstood him :fishslap: . P.

I know of someone who caught 12, bones, from shore in Chatham last week. They just came in for a hour or so in the afternoon and were gone but he said non stop action till they left.

The Hammer, 1oz when possible go up in size when the wind blows.
Best in my opinion.

It's weird, bones have a rep of being sketchy about both line and what you offer them but I always find bones to be simply ruthless predators most days. They were this year. One of the best runs of them I can remember as well.

We've had clients catch them on both 9" spooks and the big 3.5 ounce Gibbs Pencil this year. And they were tiny bones, maybe 4 pounds.

I find topwaters deadly on them. TT is right on, don't be afraid to throw a curve ball. Real tuna are into the Mag Darter too.

I think that is what he meant. Basically using your needles as a casting weight. The fly would be behind the plug.

All you need is a Bill & Jules Terminator fly on a teaser rig and put a Sting Silver lure on it 1 1/8 oz, with red eyes baby!!! you will be in like flint. :eyes: :call: 9 years in a row I took more that 30 albies in a 3 week peroid on these, also won a shot at the boat one year with top shore albie, and also won many womens weeklys with these babies SHHHHHHH just don't tell anybody.

Sting Silver lure is made by Hawg river, you can find them in the tackle shops on MV especially COOPS

You can run a teaser either way. The most conventional is to keep it a few inches ahead of the lure to simulate a big bait chasing a smaller bait, the theory is that it brings out the competiveness to beat the other fish to a meal. But I`ve also seen the teaser run in back of the lure, tied in at the rear and run a couple of feet behind.
