View Full Version : bluefish disease
nightprowler 09-02-2006, 03:11 AM Caught a bluefish tonight before the gale blew in that had some nasty looking stuff on the side of it. it looked almost like it had been scaled or something. It would be a long way for one of the blues that clammer has caught and mangled, i guess thats an option, but does the striper disease (forget the name and its to late to search...) with the legions effect blues as well? these didn't really look like legions as it affected the entire side of the fish. no bass tonight, but caught about a 15 lb blue, hell of a fight, just as the wind was picking up to better then 25 kts. it got nasty out there with the snap of the bluefish gods. chased me off my perch when the waves started coming to my waist. would have stayed longer, but only bloos to show.:hidin:
clammer's prayer's have been answered :jester:

All joking aside - if the disease can spread from one to another that would be very bad for all susceptible species...
Anyone know the answer??

piemma 09-02-2006, 03:19 PM BLUES RULE!!!!!:musc: :musc: :musc: :musc:
riverrat55 09-02-2006, 08:21 PM Probably a clammer gash or a tuna bite!!!
I don't know what the F&&&# is worst!!! LOL'S!!!
tattoobob 09-02-2006, 08:29 PM It could be from someone unhooking it, I see a lot of people stepping on a Blue fish to unhook it. then throw it back. A boot with cleates or scraped on a rock would probably do some damage.

It was a lot nastier then that. My buddy and i couldnt believe how gross the fish looked. I just grabbed the hook with the pliers and didn't even touch the fish. it was almost a white color. ive never seen anything like it before. if its clammer coming to the cape....im scared.:devil2:
but seriously, ive never heard of anything affecting bluefish, is there a disease out there or just a solo fish?
tattoobob 09-02-2006, 09:50 PM This could be more of a question for the Fish & Game Dept.
zimmy 09-03-2006, 05:28 PM Doesn't sound like it (mycobacteriosis). The description sounds like maybe it had an interaction with a net? I haven't heard of any cases of it affecting blues, but it certainly (theoretically) could, especially if the immune system is compromised.
Slipknot 09-03-2006, 06:35 PM I thought the cases of FEB a few years ago involved bluefish :huh:
the guy from Marion and then Capt. Pete lost his leg I thought from fish handlers disease from blues, maybe I'm wrong.

The cottage cheese disease...
If that's what it looked like I've seen it on stripers before, usually on holdover fish hanging out near power plants.
