View Full Version : Wire Line Setup??
"Lou" 05-23-2002, 11:27 AM I was thinking about getting a wire line outfit for this year. Last year I tried trolling umbrella rigs on mono around Point Judith and Charlestown without much luck. I haven't used wire before so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what rod/reel combo they would recomend. I know that the rod has to have special guides on it so the wire won't destroy them, but im not sure what they're called. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
(I thought i remembered a thread on this from a while ago but I searched and couldnt find it.)
fishsmith 05-23-2002, 11:57 AM Lou,
The current "On the Water" magazine has an article on wire line trolling, and I think it mentions types of gear needed too, but I only skimmed it.
Carbide guides are the ones that can handle wire. However my buddy ops to buy cheapo boat rods w/penn jigmaster reels as his wire line set ups and they're 2yrs old now.
OliverNBPT 05-23-2002, 02:00 PM I use the Penn 113HSP's, www.tackledirect.com has decent prices. Any rod with carbide quides will do - may want to check the with the local shops depending upon how much you want to spend.
JohnR 05-23-2002, 02:08 PM Those are good prices, ten bucks cheaper than one of our sponsors but they give good prices when you say you're from here ;) ....
OliverNBPT 05-23-2002, 02:11 PM Sorry John, didn't even think of that. Feel free to pull that post off or edit it.
bloocrab 05-23-2002, 02:21 PM ....is it just me, or is it just not as much fun with steel versus it's cousin..."lead"....or better yet mono....
....I know the need for wire is to get you down to the strike zone...but I just didn't care for it...not that I wouldn't do it again...."LOU"....:D
...do you guys think it takes some of the "feel" out of it for ya...???
"Lou" 05-23-2002, 02:32 PM I noticed a couple guys talking about using leadcore line. I guess im kinda in the dark about that too. It sounds like its a lot like wire but not exactly? Does it have a specific use, or is it just an alternative to using wire?
fishsmith 05-23-2002, 02:34 PM Bloo,
I think it takes alot of the feel out of it. But for me the chance to get a monster down deep is well worth losing some of the fight.
on the flip side
I know I get into a bad habit of not checking the jig/bucktail for weeds as often as I do with a mono set up.
Lou, beware of where the backing meets the wire, that knot will slice your thumb like butter if your not paying attention.
GBOUTDOORS 05-23-2002, 02:36 PM Bloo we are talking line here right:laughs: I like lead find it's easyer to work with. But they do say it is not as straight a connection as wire because it gets a bow in it??? But I tend to like the easy way out most times:) Also it is colored every 10yrds so all you need to do is count the colors (5' for every 10yrds out)
bloocrab 05-23-2002, 02:41 PM GB, it gets a bow in it.....yeah sometimes, butt ...:bshake:
....thats no comparison to the wrinkle that can form on the wire....;) when your unexperienced........like Bloo was
...kinks, stinks....and bows are for the woods...:D GOT CAMO?...
A GB quote: ..."Also it is colored every 10yrds so all you need to do is count the colors (5' for every 10yrds out)"....and you'll know pretty exact, as to how deep your fishing...based on the speed of your vessel....:)
JohnR 05-23-2002, 03:00 PM Oliver - no problem, I do like to throw in a good word for the guys & gals that keep the lights on though. I really don't mind if someone says they got a good deal and good service from someone else and I don't mind if you or others post that. I do wish that people give our sponsors a shot when they can because I feel they'd be happy (they might even save you a couple extra bucks if you say you're a member here ;) ). I won't put up a sponsor unless I've used them personally or unless someone recommends them or they have a good rep. Most of the shops, I've used persoanlly on numerous occasions to my MY stuff :hihi: ...
What I don't like to see is people who own a shop or push a product jump on the board and start dropping all kinds of self promotions for several reasons:
1) I ain't a rich philanthropist and can afford to toss a site together for free (therefore someone has to kick in something) and if I was rich, I'd probably have no advertising, purely Word-O-Mouth :D
2) I find it very irritating when someone who has never contributed word one to helping people out here or joining the fun starts dropping reports off to no end and pushing their business. I'll give an example of the most annoying case I've had here, last year, Mike Bartlett from B-Fast kept on dropping reports in every week not only pushing his guide service and the people he had aboard but he was also putting the names of other tackle shops in his reports! And it was the same cookie-cutter report on 47 different websites. This was also before we had a few charters supporting here. Now I'd asked him nicely not to do it and even followed up with an e-mail (which I never heard back from) yet he proceeded to do it again. I though it was pretty rude. I don't like rudeness....
We have a great site here with people that have opinions that others want to hear. If you have a good report from someone, that's cool, go ahead and put it up. At the same time, if yer in the market for a reel or something and one of our sponsors is convenient via walk-in or web, give them a shot (make sure you say you're a member here)...
As for charters, there are a couple here that float thru and contribute knowledge (and soon hopefully Sponsors - I'm working on something new & reasonable for that ;p ) and are liked & respected members of the S-B community. They get a little more slack (you know who you are :eek5: :D ).
.... As a side note, I've been slacking on updating the User Agreement and adding more info about "SPAM" or "Commercial Advertisements" on the boards and I'll do that if I get a chance tonight...
Anyway, enough ranting from me but in a nutshell (OK, almost enough ranting) this site still costs me money out of pocket every year. We've never broke even, I will need to soon but I'm not trying to make a living on it either. The people that do help keep the lights on and the CPU fans turning are the shops, guides, & custom rod & bait people we have, and those of you that chip in when we have these raffles/auctions... We don't even charge for our Tourney Legs :laughs: ---- Again, sorry for the long wind...
OliverNBPT 05-23-2002, 03:54 PM Well said.
By the way, I have purchased from S-B sponsors and have had great experiences / great prices. Specifically the guys at Cape Cod Tackle who I would highly recommend.
Thanks for the site.

There are a few production rods on the market that will handle wire line Daiwa Sealine SG72C has Fuji Silicone carbide Guides they will not grove with wire and this rod is about the lightest rod in it's class. Most of the comercial guys out of our shop run it.
The most affordable rod is the Bill Fisher wire line rod it has Carbide guides and top & cosmetics are great !
as far as reels Penn 500L aluminum spool is a good reel quick change spools, aluminum spool will corode if wire is not removed over the winter.other reels include the penn's 112H ,113H ,113HSP & 330 GTI.
Scotch Bonnet 05-23-2002, 08:49 PM Ronnie at Breachway B&T has quite a few wire line outfits on display. This might give you an idea of the different setups that are available. You can get a feel of different rods before you make your final purchase. I think there is NOTHING better then being off Block Island on a bass boat jigging wire. For me, thats as good as it gets(except for the sore shoulders).
"Lou" 05-24-2002, 11:24 AM Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. I gotta go to a wedding saturday but maybe i can work in getting a setup and trying it out during the rest of the long weekend. Thanks again and tight lines.
