Tough day today. Tough day today in our history as a nation, as a people, as individuals. Five years ago today way lost far too many of our countrymen and some from other parts of the world. Since this day many more have lost lives in a struggle that defines the early part of this century.

Please say a word of thoughts and prayer for those that did not survie this day 5 years ago and their loved ones they left here with us to look after.

Please say a word of prayer and of thanks to the men and women of our armed forces, DOD, State, and Intelligence agencies that work day in and day out to serve our people and our country.

Thoughts, thanks, and prayers....

And the bastards that pulled it off are still out there, there will be no rest for the souls of 9/11 until they are caught, killed and brought to justice. It makes me sick on one hand that when they are finally caught we will afford them the courtesy of our justice system where they afforded no one the same in return and they do it in the name of God. On the other hand this is what makes us truly great.

Thank God and all those in the world who hold love, peace and caring for each other as the eternal doctrine of righteousness.

I was just thinking back that night I went to Old Harbor in Sandwich with my fly rod to cast for sunset school fish. I met Mike Figlioli there, an old friend from flyfishing days. It was quiet, eriely quiet, no planes in the sky, no cars or people. Mike saw me coming and instead of saying hello he said, "It will never be the same again, Steve", "but I had to come here to help me think through what I saw today". I just nodded and we silently waded in and started casting. I don't remember if we caught anything or even saying goodbye.

A week later I was on Balston Beach and a gentleman approached me as I was casting into a gentle wash. He asked if I had had any luck. I replied that I was just starting. He looked nervous or maybe anxious would be a better word. He had no boots or waders on just shorts and a sweatshirt and carried a small bag over his shoulder and a small tin hung from his leader off of his rod. I noticed he had a thick New York city accent. I asked if he was from there, he looked up at me and I could see his eyes welling up with tears, "Yes he said, I live in the city". I aksed if he worked in town and was he close when it happened. "With tears now rolling down his cheeks he told me, " I was on the 12th floor of the north tower when it hit" he started to sob and then quickly turned away and started walking to the north along the beach and casting as he went, sobbing all the time I watched him. I silently asked God to help him get through it as he disappeared over the point to the north of me. And I cried for him and all the others for the first time that day, on that beach, alone as the sun set behind the dunes.

God bless them all and keep us all in this new age.

It's hard to believe that five years have already passed since those cowards took all those innocent lives.

Our world is now a different place and we owe so much to the brave men and women who serve to protect our freedom and way of life.

Soon after the tragedy of 9/11 I found myself on the shoreline seeking some sense of peace in a world that had seemingly gone mad. I was with a friend and I had just commented on how eerily quiet it was; no planes overhead, no sounds of traffic, and then a siren went off. Any other day, it would have blended into the sounds of day-to-day living; on September 12th it was cause for a whole lot of concern. We both looked at each other with eyes wide open wondering what had happened now. I think that’s when I realized there would never be any going back to life as it existed two days earlier.

Since 9-11 I’m sure many of you have stories of how you’ve been inconvenienced at airports and by other security measures. I was on a plane that was redirected into making an emergency landing for security reasons. That message was delivered by the captain of the plane and you could tell from his nervous tone that this was no routine situation. His voice cracked as he described the fact that we would see ambulances, fire trucks and rescue workers on the secluded runway that we would be landing on and that the FBI and Airport Security would be boarding the plane with bomb sniffing dogs once on the ground. Needless to say a lot goes through your mind, especially after 9-11, when you find yourself in this kind of situation. Are all planes being grounded? Have there been another number of planes hijacked? It turns out a very suspicious piece of luggage had made it onto the plane and they didn’t want to take any chances. We had to wait in buses for over two hours in the cold, to find out that there was no threat.

A couple of days after the towers fell I posted this picture with the message: I hope you can find solace in the surf. The ocean has always been my altar and a place where I feel close to God. Let’s hope the family members of the victims have found some sense of peace after their terrible loss.

Flight 93 crashed a few miles from where I grew up.

I get choked up every time I think about the ordinary people on that plane who, facing impossible odds, made the decision to take the fight to the terrorists. As long as I'm alive they won't be forgotten.

Nobody Forgets,, Everybody knows exactly where they were that moment in time . We are reminded everyday with the security getting in and out of buildings in Boston . Everytime you see a fireman it crosses your mind . Everytime a plane goes over head it crosses your mind. Strangers circled in a moment of silence today on the streets of Boston,,not organized,, just small groups of people here and there. Everybody deals with it there own way . You don't have to post on a fishing site .. Most its somber silence.. We'll all bring this with us to our dieing day . 9-11 we all changed,, forever.

8:46 am I pulled my truck to the side of the road, shut off the engine and radio and sat quietly until 8:47. That was one long, thought filled minute!

Exactly

Skip - having talked with many people here about 9/11 I can assure you there is no forgetting. Yes, some of the populace is moving on a little but perhaps not as many as some think...

I was on 30th floor @ 3 Times Square when it happened, very eerie. People on the streets in NYC in silence, crying, talking, shock, etc., but def. unified! Never forget to this day when I was on 45/5th Ave, when the 2nd tower just buckled. Only thought (besides did that just happen?) was of a few good buddies that were working in the Trade Center, thankfully and luckily all my friends got out. Some coworkers didn't. Candles and people on the street that night is a sight I know I'll never forget. I really can't describe it. Next day, rollerbladed down there to do something, anything - heavy military and authorized vehicles presence rolling down W. Side Highway, people cheering, waving flags, handing out food, water, anything. One sign in particular stands out, it read "YOU MADE US STRONGER." Yesterday, flowers, signs, banners, flags all over and around WTC. One word came to mind - Pride. I work @ NYSE now, heavy - and I mean heavy security presence there. I dont think people will ever forget, they just deal with in different ways....

ps: My buddy Edna (who sometimes posts up) was friends with Jeremy Glick (flight U-93) - he told me Jeremy was a wrestling champion and blackbelt, big guy who didn't F around and could hold his own - told me the terrorists didn't stand a chance, never mind the countless others on that flight - to me, those are heroes.....

I still get choked up. Glad I didn't run off and join the military though. Was actually talking to recruits the couple weeks following.

No one in this generation or the next will EVER forget.

I willing to bet that most of us, had we been asked on 09/12/06 if we thought there would be another attack within the next 5 years, we would have all answered YES.

And yet today, we haven't been, they've tried and failed. We have the agencies that everyone has mentioned to thank and thank and thank.

In addition to the agencies mentioned, let's not foregt the 1st responders. they bear the burden everyday to prepare and be ready to step in, even when they don't know what they're stepping into.

While everytime I see the World Trade Center come down I GET MAD.
and then I'm thankful, grateful and appreciative of the last 5 years. And yes times will never be the same, but we're Americans and we can do whatever we have to to prevail.

Tony Blair was recently asked "What is the greatest country in the world?". He instantly answered "The United States of America". the person asking the question immediately asked him how he knew this. Blair replied "Because more people are trying to get IN, than are trying to get OUT".

God Bless America
