ARRghhhhh...

sharking on jeffreys today. whell all last night too.
left the merrimac about 7:00 for some all night sharking but only managed one 60# blue shark all night.
at sun up we took off for the eastern side of jeffreys to try another slick. got 7 blue sharks from 60# up to 300#

i saw the biggest "shark" i've ever seen in my life "alive" besides a basker. HUGE blue shark. i mean a monster !!!
400-500# EASY no chit !! we all saw it.
she came right up into the slick with 2 more about 80# and a 200# we ripped the bait away from the 80 pounder to try to get the big one but the 200 pounder got the mid bait and we had to fight him. we never saw the big one again.
you know those BIG blue sharks over 300# how they look. there all battle scared and maybe a little wiser from there years of travels. nose starts to square off.

8'th and last fish of the day i'm up next for my second shark.
after a long,,,,,,,,,3 hr. lull. we decided to make lunch.
you know what happens when you get all the food out to make lunch. :devil2:

MAKO!!!!!

Very nice!! You get good fish Freak. I'll be out tuesday and wednesday for tuna, bottom fish, and of course our beloved striper if time permits. I haven't got a non junk-shark on my resume, but the tuna gear should handle those, so thats food for thought.
How were the dogfish? They were hitting jigs last weekend.

nice one sea-gar. you get that north of the cape?
thats the first one i've seen up here. caught many down off nantucket and south, but not up here. got a thresher last year up on northern jeffreys, but mostly blue sharks and porbeagles are all we find east of stellwagen and up on jeffreys. i know the tuna guys get some big makos every year.

we need a new 6 foot gaff. looks like a pretzel now. :smash:

rumor is there's a great white on northern stellwagen harrasing the tuna guys..

hmmmmm,,,,,:hidin:

Yes - caught it on northern Jeffery's. I fish out of Wells, ME - usually fish between the fingers and the curl.

He broke our 6' AFTCO gaff as well - they may replace it though. Broke the tip of my tuna stik also.

Sounds like you are out there a lot - give me a call on the radio. Boat name is Sea-Gar. I'm thinking about taking Friday off to try for tuna. I have yet to hook up.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do with it? Sell or eat?

There were 3 of us on the boat - we split up the 150lbs of steaks and gave it to people at work. 65 families had a nice dinner from that shark.

Cool, that was a pretty nice thing to do. Can you sell it at the fish auction? I wonder what it gets per pound.

You need a special license from the feds to sell any shark, you HMS license isn't good enough, even if you are in the general category. In fact if you are in the general category, you can't even fish for sharks.

I was just curious, as usual. I like to let them all go myself. although haven't caught a mako yet. Should be real exciting when we do.
