View Full Version : Canal tomorrow ProfessorM 09-24-2006, 09:20 AM Anyone else hitting the canal for the early slack. Should be good all this week for top water action. P. Mike P 09-24-2006, 11:20 AM It it's still blowing 30+ SW, don't look for me ;) striprman 09-24-2006, 11:26 AM It was damp and foggy this morning, caught a few small ones on jigs and had a few taps on the bait rod. Kind of a suck morning but I did catch a couple fish, even if they were small. Tuesday and Wednesday should be better (I hope), not as windy (I hope). NIB 09-24-2006, 12:53 PM Don't wait for slack. ProfessorM 09-24-2006, 01:34 PM It is surpose to go around to the NW tomorrow but still strong. I think I may wait till Tues. morn. clambelly 09-24-2006, 01:36 PM OMG, i think i could reach the cape side with a cast from the mainland in a heavy northwest wind! Mike P 09-24-2006, 02:56 PM NW--fish mid-Canal on the mainland side ;) stiff tip 09-24-2006, 05:19 PM paul fished the canal at gallos ,east tide from 5.30 to 9 slow on plgs a few brakes in the middle , sm bass - blues .. i did see a sm school of bones for 10 sec, all n all it was slow ..... same at scorton ldg. on sat .. 1st boat out ,no fish all am , 20 boats buy 7am. fished around inside n deep .....squat.. same story w/ other boats.... should have been hear yesterday ProfessorM 09-24-2006, 05:30 PM Aw Dave I am sorry to hear that. I was wondering how you made out. I stayed at home I guess I didn't miss anything. Yes the yesterday was damn good. I may try on thursday after the wind turns and blows from the right direction. I wonder when and if all those fish will eventually go thru the ditch or head for the race with all this SW wind because there were some impressive fish in that school. Breaking fish of that size would be awesome. Also I have found out over the years that I never get anything in the canal, mostly top water, when the SW wind blows strong. I have tried many times with very little results with a wind from that direction being strong. I now stay in bed when the SW wind gusts at the ditch. Have you noticed that? Paul Flaptail 09-24-2006, 06:16 PM I have Paul and the water for some mysterious reason gets awfully cold too. Might try it though in the morning then back to the outer Cape for a couple nights then Fishers Island the end of the week. Paul I know the question wasn't directed at me, but yes, I have ;) 25-30 SW, take a day off. But be there when it changes over to NW :humpty: ProfessorM 09-24-2006, 08:02 PM Which it will tonite and then over to the north tomorrow. NIB 09-24-2006, 08:46 PM I know the question wasn't directed at me, but yes, I have ;) 25-30 SW, take a day off. But be there when it changes over to NW :humpty: Well it was 20 sw last night an I saw only minor drop off from the night before.. Paul. I think the ditch got a good shot of those fish. Mike P 09-24-2006, 08:51 PM 15-20 isn't bad. It's manageable. NIB 09-24-2006, 11:23 PM When it comes to them NOAA reports I take em wit a grain of salt they have been riding the high side of winds an sea's since they made a mistake that cost some lives.25-35 don't happen as often as people think.Thats big winds.Like wendy's chilli force. Then agian I'm not in a boat. I think if the wind was bigger we still would have got em.There are times of yr u just can't pay attention to the normal things that might turn off fishing.Water temps are getting close to premium so metabs are up they burn lots of fuel, there is more food an they gotta eat for the long haul ahead...We spend alot of time waiting for the fall run well it's here go fishing..the time is now. ProfessorM 09-25-2006, 07:51 AM Not much on top this morning, just small fish, real small where I was looking. Flat calm conditions. Tony I take it you are jigging the west tide. I was looking for surface action. P. NIB 09-25-2006, 08:23 AM Not much on top this morning, just small fish, real small where I was looking. Flat calm conditions. Mike P 09-25-2006, 08:59 AM Not much on top this morning, just small fish, real small where I was looking. Flat calm conditions. . Until those 6 Gradys went by, running abreast and wide open :whackin: :rocketem: :wall: I did get one of NIBs devilfish that went about 13-14 lbs on a Yozuri popper. Road fishing :devil2: Plug hit the water 3' ahead of the break and never came back uo ;) Sorry, NIB, I'll take 13 pound bluefish on a 4 kt current anytime over a 15 pound bass, for the fight. I released it, too :rtfm: :rude: :p Flaptail 09-25-2006, 08:59 AM Well it sucked this morning at p195 area. Going back to the beach at least there are some fish there.:ss: ProfessorM 09-25-2006, 09:06 AM Until those 6 Gradys went by, running abreast and wide open :whackin: :rocketem: :wall: Yeah that sucked. P. tper 09-25-2006, 09:59 AM Deep this am before the Grady white show --- :) ripitsik 09-25-2006, 10:31 AM May try to head down myself when high tide comes around. Went down on Saturday night(11:00am - 4:00 am), caught about 6 or 7 schoolies on a mini mackeral bomber. Didnt see anyone catch anything to keep. I hope it picks up soon ProfessorM 09-26-2006, 08:27 AM The jig guys are getting them, saw a few yesterday morn., but I am looking for top water action. Over slept this morning, if you can call 5 hours of sleep over sleeping. They probably killed them. P. Mike P 09-26-2006, 09:34 AM When did 32" fish become "nice fish"? Word spread like widlfire on the mainland side yesterday--this particular regular got two "nice fish" jigging somewhere east of the run. Took a ride down to see these fine specimens--one was just legal, the other may have run 32"  Don't get me wrong--32" are my favorite fish to keep and eat. But let's call them what they really are--they're just above schoolies. "Nice" fish start at about 20 lbs, IMO. Flaptail 09-26-2006, 09:37 AM When did 32" fish become "nice fish"? The proper name for a 32 inch bass is a "medium" $1.00 to $1.25 in 78'. Mike P 09-26-2006, 09:42 AM Mike, remember the the old days? The proper name for a 32 inch bass is a "medium" $1.00 to $1.25 in 78'. And that was 32" fork length ;) A medium was 15 and under, am I right? The memory's starting to fade a bit. gone fishin 09-26-2006, 04:31 PM This morning sucked at the mussle bed. not one fish taken. A far cry from yesterday.:conf: gone fishin 09-26-2006, 04:35 PM Forgot to mention -- today was starfish day for me. I picked up my share trying to get that last good bounce. Man, my arms ache from hauling them in - they are BIG also. 4 1/2 ounces and a 10 inch starfish feels like a 40 pounder.:fishslap: clambelly 09-26-2006, 05:02 PM i thought the "old days" were when fish were measured in pounds rather then inches. when you heard a guy say, 'i got a 40 last nite', you knew he meant pounds. now im not that old, but thats how i was raised... Slipknot 09-26-2006, 07:09 PM I haven't been since the weekend so I have only been dreaming if fishing at the ditch, and the last dream I had, had NIB fighting and landing a humongous starfish, it was pulling drag too so that is weird. Mike, no a 32" fish is not a nice bass, it's a keeper I guess, I am with you nice is 20 NIB 09-26-2006, 07:34 PM It pulled the hook in my dream.. patpatriot 09-26-2006, 08:27 PM ill be there tommorow, west end, drive "champagne" colored saturn ProfessorM 09-27-2006, 11:57 AM I would think hooking a starfish is way more challenging than a bass. gone fishin 09-27-2006, 12:17 PM I would think hooking a starfish is way more challenging than a bass. It is far more common than you may think - when you do hook one it sometimes feels like you have a good bump and then hookup. It then becomes a serious pull to free it from whatever it may be hanging onto and then bringing it in. They sometimes will take drag as if you have a fish. It is the current running that causes the drag. What I cannot figure out is why the starfish doesn't let the hook pull out, when it is easily dis-lodged when you have them onshore. Sometimes the hook is well in beyond the barb and a light tug will tear it right through the skin. Not the case when horsing them in. NIB - I am sure you had a big cow on and not a starfish as Skip tells it. You should have saved the lip and mounted it for show and tell.:hihi: :hihi: Canalman 09-27-2006, 01:03 PM I would think hooking a starfish is way more challenging than a bass. :laugha: :scream: :rotf3: JPowers 09-27-2006, 01:18 PM One of the worst ( actually the best) fights I've ever had with a bass was a 32"er covered in that long brown lasagna kelp. Fought that bugger till my arms burned - thought sure I had my 50#er. MAC was there to witness the whole embarrassing episode. Ya never know. Slipknot 09-27-2006, 02:00 PM NIB - I am sure you had a big cow on and not a starfish as Skip tells it. You should have saved the lip and mounted it for show and tell.:hihi: :hihi: hey been fishin, it's Slip , not Skip:usd: I know what he had on that night, I was next to the elitist and had it not been for my 20 pounder biting my jig just seconds before his jig got to the zone, he would have had my fish on instead of the one he let have it's way with him. I'd estimate it may have been 35 at most. Mike P 09-27-2006, 03:19 PM Starfish don't shake their heads after you hook them, even if the current causes drag ;) NIB 09-27-2006, 04:58 PM hey been fishin, it's Slip , not Skip:usd: I know what he had on that night, I was next to the elitist and had it not been for my 20 pounder biting my jig just seconds before his jig got to the zone, he would have had my fish on instead of the one he let have it's way with him. I'd estimate it may have been 35 at most. Hey Skip.Thats funny.:D I never let it have any way with me thats why I lost it.Caught fish over 35 lbs in there. About the same current. this one was bigger.Hook was not in a good spot, the way I see it I could have lost it after 2 mins or ten mins.Hook in good i land it. Or it could have been a foul hooked fish that i would make everyone wait till the tide slowed to land:hihi: Thanks for clearin the hole of the punny fish..:D gone fishin 09-27-2006, 07:01 PM Sorry Slip the KL are next to each other :faga: Hit the wrong key:bsod: vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
