View Full Version : JohnR appreciation reel - please help us raise some funds
Sluggoslinger 09-26-2006, 10:07 AM Update: ZeeBass has been kind enough to make this offer
"Stephen
Thanks for suggesting our reel as a gift. I am willing to help! Please let me know the model, ZX2 or ZX2.1 The reel comes two colors, Titanium Grey or Satin Black. I will discount it 25% of retail. So your cost would be $974.00 I will make sure also that the serial number is under 100
Robert Koelewyn"
I have rec'd 115 via paypal so far (1:00PM 9/28). Please make sure to let me know what you handle is with your payment so I can give credit and keep track of who said they would pay and who did. This was very generous of ZeeBass to make such an outstanding offer to us. I think we need a final day for payment so we can get this wrapped up. We're really close, $730 in commitment right now. The final day to donate will be Thursday 10/5/06. Then we'll see what we have and go from there.
Thanks everyone.

So, I don't know if I am going to stir anything up here but there is a thread going on in the classified section, scroll down the thread a bit.

So far we have 11 people that have said they are in, depending on how many people commit, we could get a gift for our fearless leader who has provided all of us with such a great site. My 2006 season was the best of my life and I joined S-B in Feb. I have gotten great advise, met some new friends and have trips planned with members. For all that I invest in my fishing passion which was easily a couple thousand this year I have yet to give back anything accept advise to other members. I guess what I am saying is that it makes sense for me to chip in to getting something nice for JohnR, does it to you?
We'll need an organizer for this and I'm happy to oblidge but maybe one of the moderators will want to or someone who has been around longer so others don't worry that their money might disappear.
Either way, I'm in... Are you?
--------------------------------------------
EDIT: I guess I'll organize this then. I have a paypal account so you can send your donation Carlton_Stephen@hotmail.com (you can't see it but there is an _ between my name.) or mail checks to
Stephen Carlton
22 Gates St
Apt 3
South Boston, Ma 02127
Make sure to put your Handle on a note with your donation so i know who paid.
From there I am going to just use an excell spreadsheet and put your handle/donation on it so that people can make sure they get accounted for. If we come up short, we'll all have a vote on what is the next best thing. It shouldn't be hard... Whats $20 anyway??? A round of drinks, half tank of gas, a plug... lets do this and we can all end the season feeling like we did a good thing for a good guy.
Megabyte 09-26-2006, 03:27 PM Count me in for $50.00

Finaddict 09-27-2006, 01:27 PM We are close to the VS ... if we don't get a significant amount more donations ... let's not wait until next season to get this to John, so we need to set a deadline.
Slipknot 09-27-2006, 01:53 PM I'm in also for 20
SluggoSlinger, since you are coordinating this thing, you should ask the seller if he will:
A) Hold the reel for a few weeks while we get this together
B)Give a break on the price for a good cause.
I still feel that a V/S is a V/S and although expensive, they are pretty comonplace. Getting the ZeeBass would be truly extraodinary.
-Zac
Sluggoslinger 09-27-2006, 02:34 PM I agree with the Zeebass idea. That is what we will push for.
If any of the sponsors have access to that reel and could order one and supply it at a discount that would be the ideal way to handle it. I might also get in touch with ZeeBass directly and see what they say.
I think the most important part now is that if you said you would pay, either mail a check or use paypal. If someone is going to be at the Harpoon Striper cup then they could handle taking donations and making sure that the people get credit for it. When we give this to JohnR, We'll give him the list of who donated what with it.
If this works out, I'll feel really good about it, we all should. We have 490 in promised money now. Lets see where we go from here!
Fisherwoman 09-27-2006, 02:36 PM Put us in for $60!!!

wader-dad 09-27-2006, 03:09 PM Duh- sorry- I am still brain dead from Cuttyhunk.
Finaddict 09-27-2006, 03:12 PM SS -
Thanks for managing this - we are half way there, roughly $550. If we go the ZB route, that is fine, but again, it will be better if we can get it to John before the end of the season ... unless he would not want to use it for fishing.
surflawyer 09-27-2006, 03:32 PM I posted the Zeebaas reel thread in the Classified section, and have benefitted, along with the rest of you, from this site. It's great to see the interest in putting together a fund to purchase the reel for JohnR. Accordingly, I 'm willing to drop the price another $100, down to $1,000 (that's $300 off the sale price) for this purpose and would be willing to hold the reel for a few weeks to help you put the purchase together. A little background about the reel: Model ZX2/2.1, dual line rollers(multi-coated titanium designed for braided line up to 80 lb; 16.9oz, 12 ball bearings, special military coating on all surfaces to withstand salt spray; surf-friendly washout holes in rotor and spool; two different sized, interchangeable spools; line capacity is approx. equivalent to a VS 150; mahogany case; made in the USA, and of course, absolutely mint, never used, still in its case !

maddog2020 09-29-2006, 11:48 AM Sluggoslinger: this is a great idea, BUT if you are going to get JohnR the Zeebaas, we should "buy" the one from Surflawyer (he is offering it for $1000 - see post #24 on this thread above). Keep in mind we would be helping him out as well. :)
Surflawyer's reel comes with TWO spools where the std kit has ONE spool. The reel direct from then is a "savings" of $26.00 and JohnR would get two spools and a low serial number as well !
Bronko 09-29-2006, 11:51 AM $20 in the mail this morning. Keep an eye out for it. :eyes:

Striperhound 10-01-2006, 06:58 AM I think I remeber seeing on the Zeebaas site somewhere you can get custom engraving on the side plate. Maybe they would be kind enough to put the SB logo on the side plate for John once this is done.
Fisherwoman 10-01-2006, 09:56 AM SLuggoslinger, is any body going to the striperfest today that will be collecting any money, if not I will put a check in the mail tomorrow.
thanks jules
Rappin Mikey 10-01-2006, 10:04 AM I must contribute. So will that damn Ricky!!!
Sluggoslinger 10-01-2006, 11:58 AM I'm planning on coming by the striperfest for a litle while. If you don't meet up with me there you can just mail the check or use paypal. I think we are getting very close (in commitment money). As of this post, we have about $400 collected. My spreadsheet is on my work computer so I'll have a better update for you all tomorrow.
Also, the idea of getting it ingraved is a great one. I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out.
wheresmy50 10-01-2006, 02:38 PM If we don't collect enough for a Zeebaas, could we just go with an engraved VS, and if possible an extra spool?
Thanks for organizing this, by the way.
Sluggoslinger 10-02-2006, 11:00 AM OK here is where we stand at the moment. $510 Collected so far with $864.99 in commitment.
Come on, we are so close! Just a little more. I know we can do it. I am very impressed with everyone that bucked up and donated. We just need a couple more people to join in and we'll be there.

"Steve
Let me know how you want the name engraved. We typically do this on the side of the body opposite gear cover. It will be laser engraved, and I will have this done at no additional cost. Just let me know if you want the titanium grey
Or satin black color.
Rob"
I've recieved $680 so far so we are really close. Just keep it coming. As soon as all the money is hear, we'll put up a post and you guys can decide on what it will say.
Thanks again everyone. This has been allot of fun to organize.
Slipknot 10-03-2006, 08:47 AM Sluggoslinger: this is a great idea, BUT if you are going to get JohnR the Zeebaas, we should "buy" the one from Surflawyer (he is offering it for $1000 - see post #24 on this thread above). Keep in mind we would be helping him out as well. :)

I agree with Ray. I didn't realize you edited the lead post with an offer from Zeebass.
Maybe we should stick with the original plan, and maybe surflawyer could drop his price a bit and we'll get the reel and the spare spool from him like what was the original thought.
good job everyone
Sluggoslinger 10-03-2006, 08:54 AM I posed this question to John and he would like to get the one direct from the factory.
John is the boss so I am following his wishes since this is for him.

He did buy me some cool ice fishing stuff last year for Xmas, though...that was pretty generous.
PS-Mikey my birthday is two weeks from today.
$40 sent via Paypal today.

Sluggoslinger 10-05-2006, 12:18 PM OK, we are just about there. $900 collected! We're sooo close. I emailed Rob and ZeeBaas today to get some details on shippng it and the final price after everything is said and done.
I'd like to get this to John next week so he can use it for the fall run.
I also think its important that we realize that this was Raven's idea to begin with and we all made this happen together. Raven also had an Idea for the inscription. What was it again Raven? Something like Thanks from the members of Striped-Bass.com?
It would be good to have the web address on it incase it ever goes missing, it will turn up.
I have a list of everyone who has contributed that I will make sure to post on here once this is done as well.
Thanks guys,
