BEETLE 10-07-2006, 03:54 PM My same thoughts FF. I do like that hull, I see why you wanted it - will be a nice ride when you are done.
You doing anything to the outer hull, or is the gel in good shape ?
thefishingfreak 10-07-2006, 03:58 PM no that will be painted.
leaning towards black right now?

Freak - how about black - where the upper is blue now, then white, then black bootstripe, with black bottom paint ??? I assume you'll keep it in the water all season.

what do you think of gorilla glue for the fiberglass to rim/lap joint? whatever you call it?
ie: the glass hull sandwiched between two strips of plywood
there website says 100% waterproof, strongest glue on the planet, etc...
i gotta grind down to raw glass anyways. but maybe that will work better-faster-neater thean mixing cups of fiberglass resin.
i'll resin and matt whear needed, after.
crash 10-15-2006, 08:33 PM I've had poor luck with gorrila glue in a marine environment. I now epoxy everything.

an i'll be sleepin in it :hidin: gotta have room for the family too.
nice big cabin w/ a flush head. full glass all arround, hardtop. gotta fish all year in any weather. this would make a kickass center console.
i watched a 420hp volvo tamd go for 800 bucks on ebay last night.
that would be sweet, just a little too heavy i think.
Diamond Tackle 10-21-2006, 06:02 PM Man o man , all I can say is you are an ambitious and hardworking guy. That is a LOT of work, but if anyone can pull this project off by the Spring ? :musc: , you can.
tattoobob 10-21-2006, 07:23 PM Looking good, very good :claps:
nightfighter 10-21-2006, 07:29 PM Nice clean start! Be sure to mark holes from engine mounts somewhere on hull for reference later, trust me... Should have chimed in earlier, but when we re built a 1957 Beals Island 37', I wished I had referenced everything we took off by weight and location of the weight. When we repowered, the block moved forward, the transom and knees were new, and I raised the coach roof for headroom. All these changes were enough to affect how she floats on her 'new' lines.
You building a plastic shed around her for the winter build? Was always a challenge to get temp up enough to epoxy. I'll be down after the run is done.

What engine is that?
thefishingfreak 10-22-2006, 05:43 PM 350 chevy. or "marinepower" 260 hp. borg warner velvet drive 1:1 ratio. 1992 year freshwater cooled. 500 hours. that will be ripped appart tomorrow night and inspected/re-gasketed/painted.
only one bud can,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,in the pictures

Whalecod 10-24-2006, 08:18 AM wow, youve made alot of progress Mike. Ill drop bye the shop one day this week.
taJon 10-24-2006, 11:26 AM thats too bad its junk. Diesels are pricey. can you get one out of a junkyard and put it in a boat?
thefishingfreak 10-24-2006, 11:37 AM i watched a running 420 hp tamd volvo go for 800 bucks on ebay last week :wall: right down the street in r.i. too
that would do me nice.. they put twins in these things so a 420 volvo weight wouldn't matter. i bet the flybrige i'm leaving off weighs as much as the difference..
thats the plan now watch ebay for cheap 350-400 hp. diesels. the fuel saving in one year alone will cover the cost.
they didn't winterize this thing right, water was left in the exaust manifolds and it creaped into the head. down the pistons and in into the oil pan :poke:
deisel it is :humpty: :boots:
Little Round 10-24-2006, 12:00 PM If you look in the right places you can find one that is coming out of a boat about to be repowered, or has been overhauled. I know 2 years ago Mass Martime had a couple running diesels that went to there aution for short money. If you look around you will find stuff pretty cheap.

nightfighter 11-08-2006, 06:27 AM Nice Mike. I need to score some free rod holders for my brother's boats...knucklehead doesn't have a one between the TWO!!!!
Would love to see a sketch or drawing of your plans. Use good stuff for cleating up cockpit decking and cabin sole, but do not spend much on the materials that will be serving as those floorboards. That's because they will be trashed after the build and you will want to fit in new after the big jobs, especially power plant install. It is definitely something to plan out as you build the bulkheads with the B grade stock, as I assume you wil be glassing those in.
Make any sense to pull trim tabs during build? I know I would be hitting those in the shed more than once!
I could get you a good price on a new Mercurser...
PM me...
I also have a 8 foot bench seat out of a 27' Tiara/Prusuit (spelling) you could have...
fishsmith 11-11-2006, 06:37 PM Freak if that trailer is to short, you might be able to flip it and pick up some quick cash here --> http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/wan/232405558.html

thefishingfreak 11-18-2006, 11:03 PM started mocking up some stuff.
gunna add some flair to the bow and raise the cabin up a little bit in the process.
i wanted to give the flair a good 3" extra beam amidship ala buddy davis, but there's one major problem with that.. it won't fit out of the garage door after :wall: as it is now i have to grease up the gunnels to get it in. also i won't be able to complete the wheelhouse/hardtop inside as it will be too tall.:read:

gone fishin 11-18-2006, 11:52 PM Mike you sure move fast! Flair looks great. Can you gain any space by cocking it to the side? If not you could get one of the portable garages and set it up sort of attached to the side of the shop??
thefishingfreak 11-18-2006, 11:57 PM i have about an inch on either side to get it in and out.
i'll do what i can inside over the winter, then look into a portable shed.
taJon 11-19-2006, 08:33 AM Thats what I was going to suggest. get it mocked up and build it outside. I love that carolina flare
? about the trailer. R U concerned with the tongue weight of the trailer with the stern so far off it?
stiff tip 11-19-2006, 09:10 AM ura animal.. cant wait 2 c it complete...c.c.c.
beamie 11-19-2006, 11:02 AM Mike,
How are you going to fill that in....2 layers of 1/4" ply? Boulter has nice long sheets as you probably know. Theat will be a funny shape when layed on a flat board with lots of wastage from the sheet. I suppose you could strip it with plywood in directions too with less waste.
thefishingfreak 11-19-2006, 02:40 PM i'm going to strip it with okoume plywood.
Sgt_Nutz 11-19-2006, 05:07 PM Curious, are you using the pressure treated as a jig only or is it going to be permanent?
Know what you mean about the space, I started building a layout boat in my basement once. Had to stop half way through when I realized I wouldnt be able to get it out the bulkhead!:smash:
Christian 11-19-2006, 07:01 PM so awsome! you are a handyman-and-a-half.
thefishingfreak 11-19-2006, 11:06 PM as far as the trailer, it's only to move it arround the yard.

Vectorfisher 11-21-2006, 05:03 PM Not sure I would use PT wood if you plan to glass any part of it, the oils and what not will not allow a good bond, just what I have been told. Looks good though you definately have imagination and draw pretty good too.
thefishingfreak 11-21-2006, 05:18 PM yeah, i tried all kinds of different glue/resin on it. nothing will stick to it. i'll have to switch to something else..
looky what i found right down the street.
2,400 hrs, dirt cheap. just gotta figure out what horsepower it's rated for?
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC02495.jpg
gone fishin 11-21-2006, 06:24 PM Mike - if you are going to encapsulate the whole piece with cloth & resin and the ply is securely attached to the frame and coated, it will be strong as using pine for a brace. I am assuming that you are going to completely cover all your wood with glass on both sides. The cloth will add strength to the understructure. :wid:
The sketches you provided are great. What drawing or CAD system are you using?:conf:
thefishingfreak 11-21-2006, 06:43 PM no CAD system, pencil and paper.:grins:
the fiberglass won't stick at all to the presure treated at all.

the fiberglass won't stick at all to the presure treated at all.
I was going to offer my design services but you're more talented than I :hihi:
I see you already found out about PT not good with resins... Don't know much about that but the CS guys are pretty confident that it won't work
likwid 11-21-2006, 09:32 PM ditch the PT
get marine plywood.
beamie 11-22-2006, 08:48 AM You could laminate 3 pieces of 1/2" ply or 2 3/4's to get that 1 1/2. If on a budget you really don't need to get the more expensive marine or okume pylwood for that purpose. AC plywood will work just fine for that particular application.
When it comes to doing the cockpit floor which will be glassed over, many of the guys I know use MDO.
For more "important" and structural parts of the boat use the good stuff.
Vectorfisher 11-22-2006, 04:06 PM FF I have some pretty big pieces of leftover 3/4 marine ply and some CDX 3/4 smooth on one side if ya want it

yeah i'll take it. i have to go pick up the bench seat in cohaset possibly friday i could swing bye then.
i've since laminated two pieces of plywood together to replace the presure treated. huge difference in strength with the plywood, plus it really soaks up the resin.

This is good advice Mike!!!
Don't go the cheap way out!!!
You need to make that boat good and safe for as much time that I plan to spend on it !:hidin: :hidin: :hidin: :heybaby: :heybaby: :heybaby:
thefishingfreak 11-23-2006, 10:18 PM ok here's what i did.
got rid of the presure treated.
laminated two pieces of plywood together with resin then cut to shape.
then i used mohogany boards with okoume plywood in the middle. all resined together and clamped and screwed. the center one is triple thick. i figgured to support a small pulpet.
still mocking stuff up with cheapo pine as i have a habit of screwing stuff up.
almost ready to glass these supports in permanantly.

gone fishin 11-23-2006, 11:42 PM Mike - you are a craftsman. Looks real good from the photos. I think you added mucho strength to the structure by slipping the braces over the existing glass. Your transition inside as well as out will be real smooth.
Raven 11-24-2006, 07:37 AM holy leftover turkey... lol

thefishingfreak 11-24-2006, 10:50 PM sure i'll take the pulpit.. thanks for the wood too.
thanks for the bench seat too.
the last pic is just a test overnight. i'm gunna see if liquid nails will hold the wood to the glass hull just enough so i can lay the heavy mat over it. filling the huge gap with resin looked like a very messy job.

Looks great Mike
don't use liquid nails to fill that gap
use thickened resin peanut butter consistency, mix wood flour with resin to make the paste.
also be sure to sand off all paint and gelcoat, clean surfaces well for best adhesion.
you been busy
thefishingfreak 11-24-2006, 11:13 PM wood flour, i'll try that
i been putting sawdust in it but it just makes it lumpy.:spin:
"uffah!!" 11-25-2006, 08:38 AM Look at that, yesterday you couldn't even spell Boat Builder, today you is one. Great looking job!!!
Vectorfisher 11-25-2006, 04:29 PM Mike West Systems 406 is a good product to use for thickening epoxy, there's also cabosil, milled fibers. US Composites in Springfield is the guy you want to talk with he can get you what you need and has great prices too!
thefishingfreak 11-26-2006, 04:12 PM all glassed in. the wood flour worked great.
so did the liquid nails, as i could not get that one off.:musc:
3 layers of heavy mat.
