The City of Boston Parks Dept is holding a permit access only striper derby on Long Island in Boston harbor june 1,2 & 8,9. Only 500 permits are issued and apparently they are all gone (i wonder how many went of Parks dept employees). This has been an annual event for the last couple of years and held in the fall. It seems that they changed the timing to June without really notifying anyone. I only found ot about it the other day from a post on another board. Before I really start complaining, I would like to know if any of you got any notice.
On a related note. Other than for this derby both Moon and Long islands are closed. What is the justification for the city not allowing access to some of the best shore fishing in the harbor. I thought that the islands were now a park. How can the city justify not allowing the citizens access to their own property?

Part of the justification is the police firing range, and fire dept training areas. The biggest reason however is there is a substance and alcohol treatment area in the hospital. In the old days you had to walk through the kitchen of the hospital to get to the pier. Guys would walk through with their fishing gear and cases of beer. Some were giving beer to the patients, and leaving alot of trash also. My father caught his biggest striper there, 53lbs on a live mackaral, on a cold October day

welcome to S-B!
Yeh, I heard - too late - that the LI Derby was running again. A few years ago, they started the derby as a test to see if the area would get trashed again. They let the club know (Mass Striped Bass Assoc) and a few others and made a small article in the herald I think. But I don't know what happened this year.
I guess the other "residents" of the island get tweaked when a lot of people are fishing it.
I think all of the other islands except for Thomson's are considered City Park. Long Island is not part of that but it is public land. I think but I'm not positive, that there is a Mental Health center on the Island as well as a Firefighter training place. They are also probably feargull that the bridge is going to collaspe on someone. I don't know if you've ever been under it by boat but it's in pretty rough shape...
BTW - this is a free site, unless you're from West Roxbury, then you must donate funds to East Dedham Party Association :D
