View Full Version : Cape Cod Canal - call it the right name!
maddog2020 10-11-2006, 06:46 AM Ok, is it just ME that gets PO'ed when some one called the Cape Cod Canal another name? I call it "The Canal" to people in the local area.
Who the heck ever came up with the name "The Ditch"?! May be I'm just perpetually grumpy. ;) When I hear people use it in that term - I always correct them. Is it just me or do you care what people call it?
When I hear "ditch" - I think of a something that is associated w/ debris or sewage. Ya know people say: "throw that in the ditch" ,or "ditch that car".
May be I should have had my coffee earlier!
Mike P 10-11-2006, 09:57 AM I dunno--guys have called it the "Big Ditch" ever since I was a kid
Krispy 10-11-2006, 10:00 AM I hate it when people use it as their board name :fishslap:
Krispy 10-11-2006, 10:05 AM And I dislike the term "jigger"

Mike P 10-11-2006, 12:02 PM Blame it all on Saltheart ;) It came about when I wanted to travel in stealth mode on the old wmi Wild West Show. I was shopping for a new handle and Mike laid that one on me--the alternative was going to be Leak E. Waders :rollem:
Krispy 10-11-2006, 12:34 PM Glad you went w/ DJ, its a cool and descriptive handle. Ive wanted to change mine for years, but I think Im stuck. Ive fished w/ guys for years who dont know my real name :wall:

Eat your heros/hogies as well! I call it a "sub" (submarine sandwich). Hard to get a good steak sub now a days..... use to go to Carl's in Waltham (now the steak isn't shaved any more it is cubed/rectangular :( )
Just bored at lunchtime. ;)
mrmacey 10-17-2006, 12:14 PM spuckies remember that it will show your age
MassBass 10-17-2006, 04:18 PM I remember people talking about the "ditch" back when I was about 10.
It always reminded of a horrific place:, " Yeah, I hit the ditch today. Lost about 7 jigs to old lobster pots and boulders. The current was way too much!! But there were so much squid that they'd try to crunch through your waders"  :uhoh: :hidin:
Slammer223 12-01-2007, 09:55 PM When you come up and over the hill and the Cape Cod Canal is on your left and the water is up it looks like a beautiful river.
basswipe 12-02-2007, 08:13 AM I hate when people refer to Rhode Island as "Rhody"...its like what ya talkin about rhododendron's? :hee:
"Little Rhody" is even worse.
Mike P 12-02-2007, 08:16 AM "Little Rhody" is even worse.
It used to be the official nickname of the state, before someone came up with "The Ocean State" in the 70s.
spence 12-02-2007, 08:24 AM "Block" really bugs me. Like let's go to Block.
Or "the Block".
It's just not right.

How about when people refer to it as "the pork chop".:bl: Is it so hard to say Block Island?
Saltheart 12-04-2007, 03:39 PM Ditch Jigger , I thought it was a clever twist on ditch digger. Anyway....I like it.
Sometimes I call it The Canal. Sometimes I call it The Ditch. now that i know it gets peoples dander up , I'm gonna call it The Ditch all the time. :)
maddog2020 12-06-2007, 06:39 AM Jeeez - some one dug this up ..... LOL.
Call it whatever ya want.
" The Canal " sounds good to me. :D If you call it " The Ditch " then I will have to assume you live outta state. ;)
We should rename the Panama Canal to the Panama Ditch then, right?
Man ....... itz gonna be a LOoooooong Winter, huh ?! :D

The Suez Canal is called "The Ditch" by mariners, the Panama Canal
referred to as "The Big Ditch" (think I'm seeing a trend). Seems the trend is that artificial gouges of earth are called ditches ;)
Saltheart 12-06-2007, 10:32 AM When they dig it , its empty until the end. So for a long time , it is just a "Ditch". I have a friedn whose father worked digging the canal. She had pictures and its amazing how much was dug (wide , deep and long) and still no water in it.
maddog2020 12-06-2007, 12:48 PM Is it over in Sandwich where they have a display of how the CCC was made?
Those would be some cool pics, Saltheart - it is possible for you to scan them/post them online for us? I'ld love to see them. I could look at old black and white photographs and listem to people's stories forever. My wife's grandmother was born at the turn of the century in England (Italian descent) and she showed me her birth certificate and bunch of old pictures. Of course every one else just walked away from her because they had hear the story 1000 times. ;) I'm facinated by stuff like that. Wish I had paid more attention to my grandparents where they were alive. :( They didn't talk much coming over here and how tough life was back then. My father's family was too poor to eat rice so they would eat yams all the time. My mother loved yams so he would tote over a big sack when he come to visit her and he would cherish his bowl of rice. My mother use to buy yams and hide them when I was a kid and I thought they needed to be in dark places ...... LOL. It turned out my father would go ballistic when he found them!! He would yell and ask her WHY would you buy those things!! That never stopped mom from eating them. :) Time has passed and my father eats yams now - may be it is just comfort food and it reminds him of her (she passed away back in 1996). Sorry... I regress as usual. Getting a little teary eyed thinking about it. ;)
Tagger 12-06-2007, 04:30 PM You ever see the old pics of them digging it ? laborers pushing wheelbarrels full of dirt .. Its is a ditch ... canal is the yuppy name..
Swimmer 12-07-2007, 12:14 PM I have been using the tunnel for years and call it "the tube". Am I supposed to be calling it the Cape Cod Tunnel?
art m 01-05-2008, 12:06 AM Low bridge ev'-ry bod-y down,
Low bridge for we're com-in to a town,
And you al-ways know your neighbor,
You'll always know your pal,
If you've ev-er navigated on the Er-ie ditch.

thats all that matters . I crack myself up every day . does anyone else think Im funny ? no but who cares !
I hate places with names too big to fit on a t-shirt, or places with three initial abbreviations - ruins the aesthetic of my stickers.
wfmdfm 01-08-2008, 06:58 PM The "Canal" when it was a ditch.
Saltheart 01-09-2008, 09:05 AM I don't think I have the pics anymore (it was her father , not mine) but I'll look. These pics show a Ditch with no water at all.
Swimmer 01-09-2008, 10:59 AM The "Canal" when it was a ditch.
Nice pics, anymore? I think I have seen the ones Salty is refering too. Ditch with no water.
wfmdfm 01-09-2008, 07:57 PM Check out this link. It has alot of pictures. I also have a book about the history of the "Canal" that has some great constuction photos. The Cape Cod Canal by Robert H. Farson
http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/recreati/ccc/photo_album/photo_index.htm
I think alot of them can be found in a museum in Sandwich. I have been in the area all my life and have had a boat in Wareham for 35 years and the first time I heard it refered to as the Ditch was a couple of years ago on one of the fishing sites. Never by locals. This is one of my favorite pictures.
BasicPatrick 01-10-2008, 09:39 AM I call it "The Canal"
Sorry guys but across the USA when you refer to "The Big Ditch" it is assumed you are speaking of the Mississippi River.
