I was thinking about plugs and tins for big surf this AM as I did my "Tour of Duty" before work. TDF's post on using a darter struck home. I had used a very tail heavy pencil popper the other day with good success in some big surf off rocks. The heavy tail was able to anchor the plug in the wash and white water. How a bass can see a white plug in all that white water is beyond me!

At any rate, got me wondering, what else do guys use when the surf is big. I remember that I ought to toss a few big Castmasters and Point Judes in the bag. Some heavier jigs. Certain needles are more suited to heavy surf that other, can't remember which ones. Any thoughts?

Its crazy, I have fish hit a teaser thats 3 inches long and like 10 strands of hair, at night, in rough surf and they nail it. Hunting machines.

ss bottles is right, awesome plugs when the surf is up. I like big needles too, habs nightngale is a great choice.

i'll jump in on this one...

by far the best metal in the market...

for the weight, it still rides somewhat higher in the water column than a kakakakastmaster, I think its due to the keel design

larger profile looks like bunker as well

always have one in my bag

also good when the surf is too rough to throw eels

swap out the dressed tail for a 7/0 live bait.....built in weight to get the eels down in the water....i think i use the pojee for that...long, slender profile...no snags on bottom either

hopkins no equal should probally get a mention, casts really well

A new favorite of mine is a heavy stubby needlefish.

Surf Howdy. Got one in Wonderbread from TDF, dives, pops, walk the dog, great in the slop!

If i want to pop a heavy surf I go to a polaris.Like a 3 oz gibbs.

3.5 ounce homemade "legendary" Akespook. Very stable w/big profile.

Hab's Night n'Gale is a good needle.Mac's Canal Pencils are real good in the big surf.Salty's Sherriff pencils are great too.Joe's tins like the big Butterfish and the Sea Scallop are sweet.Kastmasters and Crippled Herrings are nice,they just lose their flash and finish real quick.

I like bottle plugs, I have a 3oz Gibbs, yellow that works well for me.

Yes,I usually use these for bones and albies but the stripers like them as well.
