I want to buy a Penn 706, hopefully in as good a shape as can be found. Saw one on Sleez bay. Looked good with all the papers box etc. Now, I can go loacally and buy a 704z in Black and I know who has the kits to go manual pick up on that thing. But I really really really want to buy a green 706 in as near perfect as I can get. Can anyone here recommend against this or should I just buy a new 704 and convert. My heart is set on the 706. Now if anyone has one for sale or trade I would love to hear from you by pm.

I suggest you buy a vintage green Penn 706 reel and send it to Penn's factory service department in Philadelphia for overhaul. (I do this for vintage Penn reels I buy on eBay, even those that are "new old stock".) I think the older reels (like older gals) are nicer.

I think it's well worth the 30 bucks in labor/parts/shipping. Reel comes back a few weeks later as good as new, save for scratches from earlier owners. See Penn's web site for shipping instructions and repair order form.

You really want the 706 and you wont be happy until you have one, buy it and get it over with.

On a green 706, you can hear the line roller grinding from 400 yards away on a quiet night ;)

The sound from a black one only carries 100 yards or so :D

And, yeah, the timbre of the grinding changes when you have a fish on :humpty:
