What do you think of it?

I have been TiVoing this and catching some of the shows. Interesting or should I say different fishing/reality concept I guess. I have noticed a few odd things that bothered me.

I know they are all fly-guys for the most part but there was a scene where some were trying to throw a cast net and they really SUCKED! It was clear they never picked one up before. IMO there should be some test beyond the CG exam to call yourself a fishing guide. That is the entire problem with being a guide...you just one day think enough of yourself to call yourself one. If you can't catch bait you really have no right calling yourself a fishing guide, Even if you are a fly guide. It is a basic fishing skill. (Again..just my Opinion) One thing I wanted to know was..if he actually caught bait, what would he do with it? Probably watch it all die.:poke:

There was a guy fishing with one of them that they called an "expert" and was a favorite to win a contest they were in and they clearly meant it, however the guy was fishing with a spinning reel upside down and the handle on the wrong side. It was painful to watch him land an albi with a spinning rod arching guides up. He looked like a goon and the capt didn't seem to even notice.:tm:

The one show where it almost came to blows actually made turn off the show and watch Charlie Moore. That entire thing was stupid and they should take that english/ausi capt lic away forever IMO. Any capt who actually goes looking for another fishermen to "rips his f'in lungs out" (I don't care the reason) should be remove from the fishing scene. He was lucky one of the hard core NY or NJ guys didn't take a shot across his bow.

Someone asked me if you could fish with any one of the guides on that show which one would you select.

At first I said...none of them! but after thinking about it I would pick either Capt Amanda or the short dark haired guy, they both seem pretty normal, a little tightly wound up at times but somewhat normal...probably Amanda because I like fishing with women and I think she tries hard but she is a little bit of a whimp when it comes to rough water.

That English chap disturbs me. I almost want to run him down!

The older guy Paul seems OK but he appears lost at times. :conf: Also, they zoom in too close to his face.. TMI! I don't need to see all that skin detail so early in the morning!:yak:

The guy with longer dark hair seems to need an attitude adjustment at times.:fishslap: He is always at odds with the English guy.

The weirdest thing is how excited they get over a schoolie. I like something pulling on the line as much as the next fishermen but a "great day of fishing" is not a half dozen short fish. It just isn't. I agree you can have a great day and not catch a thing but you know what I mean...

Also, I wonder if they break rods on purpose? There is simply NO NEED to put that much pressure on a fly rod to break it on a 28" bass or 25" albi, this is not a Mako shark or Giant Tuna. I understand rods do break at tmes but they should not break anywhere as often as they do on that show.

All that annoying stuff said...I still watch it. It has an appeal to me for some reason. Must be the familiar area.
Anyway have you seen it?

I didn't like it at all, it is a reality show :rocketem:

Never saw it. Do any of them take their fares out at night in close where they would have a shot at a nice fish?

I like when they talk about getting an early start and meeting their charter at the docks between 7-8am. Getting an early start should mean the night before.

That being said, I like watching since the Montauk area is still an area that truly amazes me. I hope to fish it next season from the boat if possible.

That show is a joke. When I think of fall Montauk fishing I think of big bass, and blues. I cannot imagine ponying up the cash to stay out there and fish with a guide to catch spring schoolies.

Sandman, I agree with everyting you said. I also noted the upside spinning reel by the "expert".
For 50 bucks, anytime from May to November, I can take people on shore and 95% guarantee we will catch the same size fish as these guides do.

Now that I have a DVR, I have become somewhat of a fishing show fanatic because I tape a lot of them.
I totally agree with every criticism of the show. They don't seem like they know what they are doing at all, other than maybe knowing how to drive a boat. It seems like all they catch are schoolies, if that, they are always talking about "finding bass" because most of the time it seems like they only catch blues and albies. The show is like friggin' amatuer hour and I bet some hardcore Mantauk guides that are out there at night and pre-dawn are feeling disgraced by the show.
I saw that guy with the upside down reel and I couldn't friggin' believe that they guide let him continue fishing like that.
It seems like their major strategy is to chase blitzes around, I remember that english guy pointed to surfcasters on the shore and said "yeah, those surfcasters there indicate something is happening around here" LOL - give me a break. If I was paying a guide that they said something like that to me, I'd probably jump off the boat and swim to shore!

boy, you know the season is drawing to a close when mr sandman starts posting 1/2 page opinions on a tv show.

That being said, I agree with all of your points. If I am heading out at 7AM I am screaming about getting a late start.

It is an intriguing show, thought....

Yeah I have pretty much called it a wrap. I have everything put away except my surf rods, two plug bags and waders. There are still fish around but I am having more fun chasing scallops, oysters and clams and enjoying them when I critique fishing shows.
