I goofed and forgot to reply to his request and though probably too late, he requested what my observations were, what was successful and what was not about the inaugural year of the Striper Cup Tournet from OTW.

So I will gather my thoughts and send this off but I also wanted to recap what you all felt about the tourney.

Overall I was pretty impressed thought there are some issues that could be tweaked in an effort to bring forth and even better tournament. I'll post these thoughts later...

Thanks (and please no flame way :hihi: )

A good tournament, well run for a first time event. Even though I have zero intention of shore fishing, a chance at the grand prize for overall shore angler of the year would be a fair amendment. Of course a chance at the grand prize for overall boat angler of the year would be a fair amendment also. Art

Give shore anglers a realistic shot at the grand prize by having 2 monthly winners--one boat, one shore. It only means 10 people drawing for the truck instead of 5. I think that one's a no-brainer.

Freeze the club entries at June 15, so clubs don't organize on the eve of the commercial season.

How about no commercials entering during open season,

Good suggestion. No reason not to do it. The MV derby does it this way too, only they do an overall and not a monthly. The derby is also shorter in duration than the striper cup, but good principle. Only potential problem would be boat fish getting weighed in as surf fish.

I am against excluding the commercials.Almost every club has them, and the advantage is negligible IMO in terms of the club competition. Plus, the commercial seasons in Mass and RI are completely different and would be a logistical nightmare to track and enforce it all.

Shore caught fish 2 points
Boat caught fish 1 points

Have they thought about extending the length till the 1st of november? Seemed like it ended when most were gearing up for a fall run.

I think I would change the way the Club part is run. To me it doesn't seem like much of a "club" competition when sometimes 8 out of 10 club positions are from the same angler:huh:

It would be more of a club competition if only 1 club angler could fill 1 of the top 10 club positions. just my .02cts.....

I think OTW handled things very well this year. It became somewhat contentious there for awhile. Tweaking as things move along every year helps. It is very obvious that OTW listens to everyone. John I don't know why thier asking your opinon and not clamma's........:buds:

Club=team: Complete trust with your fellow teammates; Sharing your secret spots with each other, teaching each others "special" techniques, catching bait for the whole team at 3:30am before work or your day off, skipping out of work or the house to meet the pogie boat to secure fresh bait, comminicating between each other on the movement of fish. I am sure I missed a lot. I do not want to miss the camaraderie because we only have 8 members.

John, I think this captures what was in the other thread a day or so after the show. It was fresh in our mind then. I would like to see these items forwarded to them! Some or all.

I agree. It was a great time. It should be something that will last a long time. I believe it will be bigger and better each consecutive year they run it. The trophies were really great. Very befitting a great tournament that is, and will become. I will ditto some changes that need to bee made. And some I will add. I hope there is some power here to see that these ideas get to them!
1. You will definitely need a bigger tent from here on out.
2. May be some more vendors to help pass the time.
3. Speakers in the rear.
4. Lower the volume on the band.
5. Put the prizes and winners up on the stage where they can be seen and fell like the winners they really are.
6. Seating and tables.
6. I would like to see a Men’s, Woman’s and Children division added, with the one over all largest fish coming from any of these divisions.
7. And finely, the season needs to be longer. It would be fare to the people up north in the spring and fair to the people in the south of the program in the fall. The Sothern folks have the fish by May first; however they don’t get to see any of the fall migration in the tournament... I feel the real monsters of the tournament will come in the spring and the fall. May first to the last day in November would do it. For me, I would like to see it to the end of November!
If I left any thing out, please adlib. It would help if some one knows how we could get a list to them. I believe they care and would listen.
I think even they didn’t anticipate the turn out in the rain. I don’t know the final count of attendance; however one of the OTW reps told me they had approximately 2000 applications for the tournament.
That’s it. Later, L:buds:

End the contest on at least October 15th instead of Sept. 15th so as to give the surf guys a chance. Also, double points for surf caught bass with a 20 pound minimum.

Add a weigh station to fill the gap between Winthrop and Plum Island/Gloucester.
More timely reporting requirements for weigh stations.
Still not sure how to level the playing field for rec vs. commercial fishermen......

I already voiced my concerns earlier this season. I think by now they have heard all the options and then some. Lets see exactly what they do.
