View Full Version : a Rhody update..
bloocrab 06-14-2002, 08:40 AM ....here's the latest...some decent size schools of Bass have invaded R.I. waters in the last few days...
I'm not talking 40# ers...but there are some decent fish being released and there were (2) 30+ pound fish weighed in on Tuesday at a local B&T. Tube and Worm is working quite well for those who "truly" know how to do it...and from shore, broken back swimmers seem to be the ticket. The shore baiters are getting into fish too -(2# bluefish mainly, with a Bass here and there) there seem to be too many dogfish around.
On my last outing, while a man was casting...he lost the top part of his rod (it flew off with his cast, it must not have been inserted correctly)...he ended up using another rod to try and retrieve the top half that had ended up quite a bit aways...he tied a jig on and started casting...in about 30 minutes he landed at least 4 dogfish on the jigs...NEVER GOT THE TOP HALF BACK ...poor guy
fishweewee 06-14-2002, 09:02 AM Bloo,
I take it you spent most of your time on the boat.
What kind of jigs was that guy throwing? I don't think I ever caught a doggie on a plug!

bloocrab 06-14-2002, 11:32 AM ...wEE Wee....
The dogfish were being caught on a jig, not a plug....but they hit plugs....TRUST ME....or just ask DitchJigger ;)...he's got a Canal-Doggie- story for ya...:D
..and "that" guy wasn't trying to catch fish, he was trying to drag the bottom for his upper rod half...:( ...but he was landing doggies instead. :smash:
...and NO, I wasn't on a boat... I was standing in the sudz..
..<..Any more questions??..>..Dind-joo Joisey geyes getz Edgoo-macated??..:D ...I thought the story was easy to understand...  ..ever since you got yo' wee wee back ......you ain't never been the same...  ;)
bloocrab 06-14-2002, 11:37 AM ...yeah, I like using Smileeeees...... :p A LOT!! :D ...they give the post some character :jester: ..can you tell what kind of character I am... :jump1::bounce: :jump1:
fishweewee 06-14-2002, 01:06 PM :D :smash:
Sorry Bloo...I meant to ask, where they bucktail jigs or were they more like diamond-jig-like tins?

Clammer 06-14-2002, 01:57 PM bloo, I,ve also had a descent week, fishing between digging I have been catchunf large schoolies on plastics. In three outings I have had only 3 fish under 2, All three places were not near each other, today I had them at the top of the tide ands things would only get better, but I chose to get in so I can get ready for Cutty and not be to beat
Lice on todays fish
guys doing well with pogies///////////////////
later,Mike:p :p :p
bloocrab 06-14-2002, 11:47 PM ...wEE Wee.... ...he tied on a bucktail jig...but when I noticed, I explained to him ..that the direction of the hook wouldn't help as much as a treble hook. I told him to tie on an old treble setup...in case he got caught, it wouldn't be a great loss. So he tied on a diamond jig....(a large one)...and replaced the treble on it with a larger one...and dragged it along the bottom.
....One part I left out was this:
..He was using Power Pro (50#) test, he was constantly breaking the line.....we started talking and came to the conclusion that he must have gotten a bad spool. The line was busting on his casts!!!...I asked him if maybe the top guide had a crack in it...and maybe the line was sneaking into the crack and was being cut there...he claimed the line wasn't breaking at the tip...but we couldn't determine that for sure ....cuz the tip was gone!!!....
fishweewee 06-16-2002, 11:18 AM Bloo,
Interesting.
I was throwing diamond jigs up at the Ditch last night, using 30 lb. Power Pro. No takes but aggressive chases and hits on an A47 with a 7/0 O'Shaugnessy. Fish swam right up to me!
About Power Pro...apart from the obvious tip loss being a factor...I've been advised by several sources that it is best to trim off the first 10 or so feet after each trip...this reportedly helps to minimize breakoffs.

D. Blizard 06-18-2002, 12:36 PM Do you know of any good fishing spots for Stripers in or near Tiverton, RI?
I'm fairly new to this!...
Any response would be greatly appreciated!:)
Tattoo 06-18-2002, 12:39 PM D.,
Grew up over there, now I moved to the other side of the bridge.
Speaking of the bridge.....:D
Drop me a PM and I'll give you the guided tour
bloocrab 06-25-2002, 03:22 AM ..Ok.....here's my latest.....:(
....I hit the Newport area ....early evening...
NO BAIT to be found....~
NO FISH to be caught......
...even bounced the bottom, looking for a fluke!!!...:o
...I spoke to some locals....all long faces...FISH ARE M.I.A. ???...
11PM......headed South....
Caught the dumping tide~
...saw some bait....(very little of it though)
..stopped at the P.J. Pond...hooked the only 2 HkryShad in the outflow.....DANG IT WAS SLOW!!!...
...managed a schoolie out of the darkness on a G.S. kondum:eek: ..he was lingering in and out of the docks.... and just like me, he was looking for bait...
...I then moved on to the Shortwall...fished the surface and sub-surface, proceeded to catch weed-bundles....and floating debris. I went deep, got nothing!!.....
...Then I hit (a) beach ;)....NO, ...that winkee smilee don't mean a thing!!!.....I STILL GOT NOTHING!!!...:af:
...Ok, so what if the MOON was so DANG! bright!!:af: ..and it seemed like 4:30am all night...and it spooked the heck out of the fish....and pizzzed me off all night!!...

D Blizard Jr 06-25-2002, 06:20 AM Bloo,
I went out this weekend down to Sakonnet Point & experienced the same!:(
Not only were there no fisherman... there were no fish!
I then proceeded to work my way back up to Tiverton again to no avail:mad:
& decided that I would wait until early this week to try again.
I drove down to the Stone Bridge last night & saw exactly as you had told me in a prior posting with regard to transplants fishing the beach...
:smash:
There were so many rods in the water, it was pathetic.
One thing was was evident as I watched in horror...
The Skup were having a buffet!:laughs:
Where have all of the fish gone?
Tattoo 06-25-2002, 07:00 AM Where in Newport....cause I was there the other day and the place was loaded.....but out of reach (by 30 feet).
Fish busting bait for 2.5 hours. After one rat, I gave up and went for coffee.
JohnR 06-25-2002, 07:09 AM ...managed a schoolie out of the darkness on a G.S. kondum ..he was lingering in and out of the docks.... and just like me, he was looking for bait...
Do you mean the schoolie was lurking around the docks or GS?
Wow, sorry that all of that travel left so few fish... Too bad it wasn't CLOUD COVERED....
As for the moon, personally, I'd rather have the fish than a chance to bounce some moonlight back in defiance...

...Tattoo....I started at the King's Inn....and gradually made it over to Ann's Point....I thought for sure Gorge Jettyson was gonna give up some doinks.....but nAdA~
...I even stopped by to salute President Eisenhower...and pay respect to his troops manning the cannons...but even they, didn't pay me any dues... :(
...Mr. Blizzard....the "dog" days are almost here, but the schools will be boiling nearby, don't forget to glance over...as you drive home...(If the bait ever decides to show!!) :af:
Tattoo 06-25-2002, 09:21 AM George JETTYson was where I was at.....cast at the lighthouse on the horizon. Thats where they were.:;)
JohnR 06-25-2002, 10:05 AM geeez, makes me think of bad furniture commercials...
Clammer 06-25-2002, 11:49 AM There is fish for the boat guys/
Fish at Brenton Reef into the 30,s#
I can pick up [on some days] the r/r commercial guys ,they are limiting out, sorry don,t know what they are using
Duke41 there.s fish on the east side of Prudance, not the hump where they were doing well with herring, but again its radio chatter on 65 ,from the guys out of the Barrington river , quite a few schoolies in 20-25 feet of water,[trolling] but you have to move around to find, I had a few on the beach yesterday right in front of the CVS Classic, small fish ,didn,t last long/////////////

Scotch Bonnet 06-25-2002, 03:45 PM I see alot of Bass in the Charlestown Breachway but they are uncooperative. Is it a case of small bait/or lack of bait? Like Clamdigger said, lots of fish in the deep rips but next to nothing in close.
??.....I GAVE IT RIGHT BACK!!
Dang! and I missed it??!!???;) :p (sorry couldnt resist.....)
bloocrab 06-25-2002, 10:13 PM ...OK....to add to the grief :(
I was in Newport again today (on business:rolleyes: )...I spoke with a local charter boat captain.
....Bloo: "How's the fishing been?"
...Captain: "Terrible!!"
...We spoke for awhile...and he ended up telling me that if the fish aren't hanging around Brenton's Reef...they're far and few. He says he spends most of the charter searching as opposed to fishing and when he finds some, there aren't many...and NO size to em'. He's also switched to Fluke on the "slow" days...and says thats not great either. He agreed with me when I said that I was concerned with the absence of bait that should be schooling around the area.. (where are they?)....He said now wasn't a good time to take a charter with him...:laughs: (I wasn't looking for one, but I didn't tell him that)...it was nice of him being honest with me. He went on to say that his collegues are "killing" them at Montauk. So maybe things will heat up...sooner or later:(
Preferrably sooner than later...
JohnR 06-25-2002, 10:46 PM There were some in a remote spot in 'Gansett tonight :D . . . Got one, swung and missed on one and I missed the, well not exactly blitz conditions by a half hour while I was fahrting around at the pier
:smash:
D Blizard Jr 06-26-2002, 12:39 PM I'll be watching Bloo!;)
When is it best to hit stone bridge?...
Also, I was looking for Taylor Lane, but was unable to find it!
You said that it is near the end of Main Rd? just before the rte 77 merge?
Since I don't own a boat , is that an area that I can cast from ?
If Mike (Tatoo) should see this, I will be in touch for the Tour of the area!... Thanks!
I'll have to find someone who owns a boat to get out into the open waters!!!
As I am still "white behind the ears" when it comes to salt water...:o
please know that I appreciate all the advice that you have to offer!...
I've got to start somewhere!
Thanks!
Don:)
bud8fan 06-26-2002, 08:23 PM I also had the nada this past weekend! I am starting to think that if you get that full moon with no clouds you are going to go fishless more times than not!
I personally started out at Stinky Beach/Scarborough but with the moon tide you really couldnt wade much past your knees without risking getting hit by a big breaker! Also headed to the short wall and had to listen to that lousy band playing at George's. Anyone else have to put up with that?
For a few minutes my friend and I thought about putting the waders on again and walking the beach but thought better of it and headed home early!!
Hopefully with the high midnight tide this weekend and no moon the fish will cooperate a little better!!
My friend got out to the Jamestown area earlier this evening and was rewarded with a 33" bass, a 10lb bluefish and a 35" dogfish(if you call that one a reward!!!)
Later guys/gals!
