View Full Version : 2 Piece rod....1 Piece Rod....
STEVE IN MASS 06-17-2002, 02:05 PM Alrighty....I have a rod that used to be a two piece, and for the past three months has been a one piece.....I can't get the sucker apart....till now, it was no big deal, but since I have to travel to OBX soon, the wife and dog won't be happy with this javelin in the truck....
Tried WD-40 soak.....icing the ferrel and heating the receiving end, pulling, tugging, and it is still stuck.....
Ideas????????
Scotch Bonnet 06-17-2002, 02:25 PM Perfect excuse to buy a new rod!
Fishpart 06-17-2002, 02:51 PM I second the motion:D
This might work,
"Hey Saltheart, I need a Heaver, FAST!!!"
Other than that I can't really help you Steve, got quite a few metal ferruls apart with WD-40. If you can put pressure on one part of the joint and roll it without cracking it it might work. I sometimes get buckets apart by putting my foot halfway down the overlap and rolling them under my foot.
fishsmith 06-17-2002, 03:05 PM better than a one piece rod becoming a two piece rod.
STEVE IN MASS 06-17-2002, 03:08 PM Sorry, the Saltheart rod has till wait till Xmas....I already told the wife it's on my list....:D
Trying something different...some advise from elsewhere.....it involves soap and water, (something about the wife and the bathtub......;)).........will let ya know how I make out....
Saltheart 06-17-2002, 06:25 PM Traditionally , a stuck rod can be separated by sitting down. put the rod behind your legs. Grab the two rod pieces near the stuck ferrel with something like the rubber pads you use to get a jar open. Now use you legs muscles to force your hands and arms apart.
Homerun04 06-17-2002, 06:38 PM Can't help....but can tell you that if you do get the sucker unstuck, wax the male end before re-inserting to avoid getting stuck again. I use parafin wax or Ivory soap.....works nice....
Got Stripers 06-17-2002, 07:55 PM If the rod is large enough diameter, maybe you can get a strap wrench on it. Sears carries them, damn handy and it might give you the twisting power you need.
Goose 06-17-2002, 08:00 PM Try heating some water and poaring it over the ferral.....increase the temprature a little at a time. Don't just pull, twisting might be easier! Good luck!!!
STEVE IN MASS 06-18-2002, 07:17 AM Well, I put some liquid soap on it and let it sit overnite. Used the rubber pads as Saltheart suggested, and it was tough, but I was finally able to twist it a bit, and then it came apart. :)
Thanks guys, the wife will be a lot happier on the 16 hour trip now.....:)
bloocrab 06-18-2002, 07:18 AM ok
Mr. Kav 06-18-2002, 07:29 AM i guess that super glue joke wasn't that funny on our last fishing trip, huh, steve?
STEVE IN MASS 06-18-2002, 08:05 AM You looking for more tomato juice poured down your electronics panel? ;) :p
Mr. Kav 06-18-2002, 08:41 AM no, once is enough thank you very much
PetDoc 06-18-2002, 09:16 PM The best way I have found to get two round things apart eg. two piece windsurfing mast is to use those new soft wrenches that wrap around and cinch down on what you are tring to loosen. Put one on each end close to the joint and twist in oposite directions. Guaranteed to come apart. Good luck. Copy the link below to see the tool I mean at sears.com.

Saltheart 06-19-2002, 07:43 AM Be careful about using tools designed to twist the rods. A very , very slight twist (like 10 or 15 degrees you might get away with but too much twist and the rod can break do to torsion. The rods are very strong in bending but the fiber layers are not layed up to resist torsion. Don't over do it.
PetDoc 06-19-2002, 08:07 AM If you use this tool make sure you attach them right at the joint to concentrate the forces at that spot. I have never tried it on a fishing rod but it works well on carbon fiber masts that have similar bending characteristics. I would, however, defer to Salthart's opinion based on his because his experience. Good luck.
PetDoc 06-19-2002, 08:16 AM SalthEart's opinion as well. Sorry.
