Karl F 12-06-2006, 12:00 PM Benefit planned Friday for ailing Benjamin
PROVINCETOWN - A benefit for noted Cape Cod Times outdoor writer Molly Benjamin has been scheduled from 5-10 p.m. Friday night at the Provincetown VFW at 3 Jerome Smith Rd.
According to a release promoting the event, Benjamin is suffering from an untreatable form of cancer.
Attendees are asked to bring positive energy and "Benjy" stories to share.
The writer is well-known in Provincetown, where she once lived and worked for decades before her move to Wellfleet. Her fishing and outdoor columns have a devoted audience in print and online.
Food and music will be provided, and a fund-raising raffle is also scheduled.
Moderators: if you think this is better off in the scuppers, please move, just thought the cape guys might see it better in the main forum, Thanks.
tattoobob 12-06-2006, 12:05 PM Thanks Karl,
JohnR 12-06-2006, 01:54 PM Thast's fine...
Good luck to Molly
Flaptail 12-06-2006, 02:31 PM Say what you will about her but she did a fine job and she represented both recreational and commercial fishing interests with equal respect. She attended many many meetings on Striped Bass management and othern issues such as beach closures, restrictions and our old friends the plovers.
Here's one to Benjy and hope and positive thoughts for a change in prognosis.
I don't know if I can make it but I will certainly try.
Karl F 12-06-2006, 03:54 PM Very True Flap.. while I didn't always see eye to eye with her, ;) I always respected her. :btu: She is the real deal. Enjoyed her serious in depth articles, much more than the weekly schmooze.. "reports"..
I know, those have there place, and sell papers, and keep the bait shops happy.... but.. they did draw a crowd sometimes too.. and sometimes for no good reason.
But you are right, she was always there for both the comm and recs, and always a supporter of access.
Not looking like I will make it Friday night.. got some shifts to fill at work.. night guy broke his ankle on a side job.. but hope there is a good turn out for her.
(Not looking like I will make the seashore thing on Saturday AM either.. :smash:.. hope there is a good turn out for that.. too!)
I hope this turns around for her, and she can keep doing what she loves.
ProfessorM 12-06-2006, 04:02 PM Sorry to hear that.
BigBo 12-06-2006, 04:05 PM Best wishes for Molly.:o
fishonnelsons 12-06-2006, 06:57 PM As some said, "love her or hate her", she was/is another one of those "personalities" in the history of Cape Cod saltwater fishing. Would love to answer the phone at the shop and she would say "whatdoyougotformebabe?" for her weekly reports, then a short, horsey chuckle.
I'll be there Friday night, because I think she was always there....
gone fishin 12-06-2006, 08:22 PM Thanks Karl - sorry to hear that. didn't know her but recall her writings. Best wishes to her.
clambelly 12-06-2006, 10:01 PM i met molly once, at the fishmarket, while we were both selling our quahogs. i grabbed her basket that was 3/4 full of seed and carried it back to her truck. i kinda felt like i was around a celebrity..
i hope the Lord shines on her and her family through these tough times. and a simple thank you for all her dedication to the sport/lifestyle we all love so much.

Karl F 12-13-2006, 03:55 PM Columnist Molly Benjamin spins her last fish tale
HYANNIS - Molly Benjamin, who wrote unforgettably about the Cape Cod she loved, especially its fishing and people, died today.
Her daughter notified the Cape Cod Times about her mother's death in mid-afternoon. Her death came just a few days after Benjamin was present at a benefit in her owner in Provincetown last Friday.
That's how many heard about her fast-spreading liver cancer that was untreatable.
Benjamin, a fisherman in Provincetown who had moved to Wellfleet in recent years, had worked at the daily newspaper for about 25 years where she wrote fishing and outdoor columns, according to Editor Paul Pronovost.
"It's a huge loss for the Cape Cod Times and for Cape Cod," he said. "Molly had a spirit, a soul that gave color to our pages that is now lost. She had a way of making fishing columns must-reads for people with no interest in fishing. That's a huge talent."

UserRemoved1 12-13-2006, 04:00 PM I only met her once but she seemed like a hot chit. I did enjoy reading her stuff online every week.
RIP Molly you will be missed. :(
fishonnelsons 12-13-2006, 04:54 PM A sad, sad day.
I'm so glad Molly had the opportunity to meet and greet all of her friends last Friday night at her benefit at the VFW. Even though she was very ill, you could tell she was having a great time, laughing and re-telling a ton of old tales.
tattoobob 12-13-2006, 05:02 PM A sad day indeed, RIP Molly
