View Full Version : "A Day That Will Live In Infamy!"
BigFish 12-07-2006, 10:07 AM Lest we forget the Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. Many American lives lost at Pearl Harbor and surrounding islands as the Japanese attacked. Ushering the United States into World War II. Take a moment and think about it.:(
BigFish 12-07-2006, 11:36 AM WOW! I think the surviving veterans from Pearl Harbor are correct when they say people are forgetting the events of Pearl Harbor and what it represented! The last couple of generations probably don't even know anything about it....and I think that is sad!
our generation knows about it and we respect and are thankful for those whose lives were lost for this great country. but some of us don't feel the need to post a thread to validate our recognition of every monumental day in history every time one comes around.
this is a fishing site after all...
RIROCKHOUND 12-07-2006, 01:02 PM Jeez larry..
no one responds to your thread and we assume everyone under 30 doesn't know what Dec 7th signifies...?
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:05 PM Whats funny...or not so funny is if you quiz 100 folks under 25 about Pearl Harbor.....I bet less than 50% of them can tell you where it is let alone which island it is on! That goes for all of Americas history for that matter!:smash:
Sorry....I have gone off topic!
riverrat2 12-07-2006, 01:16 PM I can, Im on it as we speak. Haven't really seen much memorial services or anything of that sort around campus which is pretty sad but it is still early.
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:17 PM I knew I would hear from you Max! See all of Pearl Harbor while you can...I want to next time I get to Hawaii!
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:18 PM Must be about 8:00am there now Max?
riverrat2 12-07-2006, 01:21 PM To tell you the truth I have yet to see it up close. I have driven by it many of times and seen the memorial from a far. And yes it is 8am and I got a final in about 4 hours......sucks
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:23 PM Before you come home Max...take the opportunity to see the Arizona memorial.....I hear it is quite a moving experience!
riverrat2 12-07-2006, 01:26 PM Ya i have always wanted to but I leave in 5 days and got 5 finals to take before hand, so we will see. The weirdest thing about that memorial is that it attracts 1000's of japanese tourists. Don't they feel a little guilty or out of place???
The Dad Fisherman 12-07-2006, 01:27 PM Don't they feel a little guilty or out of place???
Could be Forgiveness. Its part of their History too.
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:31 PM They should not feel guilty or out of place! If they are there it is out of a sense of loyalty, obligation or respect! Perhaps they lost a family member there in the battle? That was an act of War......you are required to do some pretty terrible things in War and the flyers who were on that mission had their orders. Many of the Japanese flyers have reconciled with many of the American veterans who were there that morning. They have met, shaken hands and broke bread together. Days like this are for forgiving and remembering. I have great admiration for those who stood out there on that morning in defense of our country and I can not begin to fathom what it must be like to face something like that!
BigBo 12-07-2006, 01:35 PM I've been to the memorial and you're right; it's an extremely moving experience. Sends a chill up your spine when you think about what happened there. The Punchbowl National Cemetary of the Pacific is also on the list of must visit places when you go there. I also had the opportunity to tour The Air Base when I was there as my brother was stationed there at the time of my visit. Many of the building that are used on a daily basis are still riddled with bullet holes. They were left that way as a reminder of what happened.
Very chilling and moving when you think about all the lives that were lost in such a short time span.
Max. Definately try to visit before you leave.
BigFish 12-07-2006, 01:37 PM I understand that oil still leaks up from the Arizona? Many men are forever entombed in her hull Max....not sure if you knew that? Over 1000 I believe still entombed below and on the active duty list I believe?
riverrat2 12-07-2006, 01:42 PM Ya I think I remember hearing something like that during history class. It is very sad and I have so much respect for the people that were defending our country at the time and lost their lives. I wish I could get to the memorial and if I have some free time to do so I'm gunna try.
The Dad Fisherman 12-07-2006, 01:47 PM I have also heard that a lot of the Arizona Survivors have requested that when their time comes they have wanted to have their ashes scattered at the Arizona.
stripersnipr 12-07-2006, 01:55 PM The Greatest Generation seems to be an accurate description.
BigFish 12-07-2006, 02:57 PM I will second that Stripersnipr!!
Rockport24 12-07-2006, 03:10 PM I went to the memorial on my honeymoon last year, it was a VERY moving and chilling experience. BigFish, you are correct, there are still oil slicks in the water from the ship. To tell you the truth, we only had one day and night schuduled in Honalulu during our whole trip and the main reason we went to Honalulu was to see pearl harbor. I'm in my late twenties, but it was still a very important thing for me because my father is a history teacher and always ingrained the importance of history in us. Plus, if I didn't go he would have killed me!
