OK.
Brian Setzer brought up a good, underrated guitarist...
Who else makes your list of underrated guitarists.
I'm not into jazz or hair metal enough to really comment on any of them....

Some of my top underrated are:
Brian may (Queen)
David Gilmour (Floyd)

I wouldnt agree Brian May and Gilmour are underrated. If you look at any of the guitar mags, they are always listed as top players.
I can't post any because its generally not the guitar players who are underrated, but their music, in general, is under appreciated. Most are considered great by those who follow the music. For example, I am sure everyone of you know "Les Paul", because of teh guitar, but how many of you have heard his music? Probabaly very few and he is an absolute brilliant guitarist.

That being said, if you are a fan of the guitar, some greats you may enjoy adn have never heard
Danny Gatton - jaw droppingly great
Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West ( western swing with a tele and steel pedal)
Junior Brown
Chet Atkins
Les Paul
Roy Buchannan

well,
Underrated as far as VH1 type ratings, talking amongst casual fans... Not by guitar world...
Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Paige, etc.. get a lot of love. These guys get left out...

Chet Atkins is always cool to listen to

well, being somewhat of a professional artist, heres my opinion why they were never embraced by the general public.
1- they made music that was not mainstream
2- they didnt market themselves to the mainstream
3- they stayed true to thier own styles and did not follow the pack that was making mainstream music.

My dad is a big Chet Atkins fan, still watches the videos now and then. Guy was very talented. My father played for the US Navy back in the day and is pretty good as well. I'm a big Clapton fan, and the guys from ZZtop always have me rocking out.

Is Keith Richards REALLY worthy of a Top 10 Slot??

Where's Roy Clark? Not my style of Music but you can't take away the Fact that he Wails on the Guitar.

interesting list, I dont agree AT ALL with the ordering and many names should not be there. I love teh White Stripes, but Jack White does not deserve to be there. Maybe becasue its my generation, but in terms of pure rock and roll guitar development, Eddie VH should be very near the top. He defined how rock guitar was played from the late 70's through early 90's.

I think the RS list isnt really based on "guitar skills" only, but more of music impact and originality and names are added for controversy for some by some anti-skills music geeks.
I am VERY impressed Eddie Hazel is on there from Funkadelic, he is great. I scanned fast, no Vai or Satriani? Interesting.

ok, here is one, Jimmy Vaughn, Stevie Ray's brother.
Most have only heard the radio cuts from the Fabulous Thunderbirds, but Jimmie's playing is way cooler than that. He is a very subtle player and plays some very hip blues. He is kind of a guitarists, guitaist and not that popular outside of guitar circles.

I can BS about this stuff all day,,,,,,I'd better relax

Interesting combination at the Melody Tent was Robert Cray Band opening for John Hiatt. Cray was the standard always good quality show but nothing earth shattering, and then John Hiatt came out and blew the tent away. I think it was the "Tiki Bar is Open" Tour. Anyone else catch that?

Number 64 on that top 100 list, Mick Ronson. Absolutely my favorite, my guitar hero.

Arranging, producing he had the talent to make everyone he worked with look and sound great from Bowie to Dylan and tons of people in between.

He died in 1993 of cancer but if you can find a copy of the tribute concert they held in memeoriam for him buy it. It's a live set with people like Ian Hunter, Roger Daltrey, Def Lepard's lead singer and guitarist, Townsend, Queens drummer Roger Taylor, Bill Wyman in Willy and the Poor Boy's, B.A.D., The Spiders From Mars ( Bowies back up band in the 70's) Procol Harum's lead singer does an outstanding version of Whiter Shade of Pale. Just an awesome cd set.

People dont read Rolling Stone for the music, people read Rolling Stone because they dont know what to wear!! Satriani said this once and its true. Unless you really think Jack White is a better guitarist than EVH, Randy Rhoads, and Angus Young, then to each his own.

Oddly enough (and this is not Homerism) I don't see Scholz / Goudreau - from the band Boston up there. Mainstream probably, but in the late 70s early 80s it was pretty good...

They also sounded phenominal in concert (sometimes rifficuled that they sounded too much like the album when actually live)...

Gilmour should be higher on that list :hidin:

My personal favorite is a local musician and a friend of mine.
His name is Gerry Miller, and plays with a number of bands.
The main bands are The Spurs and The Coachmen, which play coutry swing and honky-tonk.
He is also proficient with the 12 string mandolin, so you can only imagine how fast he can play. If I ever tried to play anything like him, my fingers would snap off.
Every one of my friends, upon seeing and hearing these bands play, are astounded at the speed and grace that this man can play.
I know that some are saying "Country ain't real music!", but these guys aren't playing your traditional country fare, but mostly drinking and truck driving songs.

I never look at these lists seriously. you cant... too many factors play in. opinion, history, technique to name a few.

why isnt eddie hazel on the list? never heard of him? does that mean he wasnt one of the greatest guitar players? In my opinion he was.

Kurt Cobain absolutly deserves a spot if you take into account what he did during his time in music history. Unfortunatly right now we are back to a variation of what music was like before Nirvana.
I could argue this point for hours.

Mark Knopfler is awesome and way under rated!!!

Lindsey B#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&gham from Fleetwood Mac is way under rated!!!

Robert Cray is a great guitar player in my opinion....I am a fan but live he is always a disappointment! Just going through the motions!

I saw the Cray/John Hiatt show at the South Shore Music Circus 2 seasons ago and I went to see Robert Cray.......John Hiatt stole the show as the lead act he set the place on fire and had the crowd going nuts and then Cray came out and everyone fell asleep!!! Cray needs a horn section with him which I have never seen him tour with the 6 times I have seen him....it leaves a huge void in his sound!

John Hiatt won me over big time....that was one of the best performances I have ever seen and I have seen SRV about 7 times, Clapton about 8 times, BB King, Van Halen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Mark Knopfler with Clapton, Jeff Beck with SRV......John Hiatt was just awesome!!!:claps:

Buddy Guy was awesome when I saw him too!!!

Not trying to be a wise-ass or stir up trouble, this is a serious question but....just WHAT did he do. I have always felt that he was one of THE Most Overrated people in Music.

I'm sure Mr. Hunters has a lot to say about Kobain, but really, he started the whole "grunge" music scene which totally took over the industry for a long time and is still very influential today. At the time Nirvana came out, rock music was dominated by the "hair bands" whose focus was on sex, drugs, and rock and roll, then Kobain comes along with this new, raw sound and starts whining about reality and all of a sudden rock turned around and came back to it's roots. No more glam, just the music was important all of a sudden.

I am not a huge Nirvana fan but I do like the music and appreciate for what it is. I always thought rock should have an element of "glam" in it, I'm not talking about big hair and all that, but it's gotta have a swagger about it that says "listen to me", Kobain just kind of got by on sheer anger and some great songs to showcase it.

DF - Im not a Nirvana fan at all, but can appreciate Kurts impact. Sometimes you have to focus on the world of music before and after someone plays. Look at Jazz before Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker, once they recorded, it changed all the other artists. I think Cobain had a similar impact on "modern" rock. Nirvana hit like and ateroid and suddenly popular rock bands of the late 80s disappeared. Alternative music became mainstream. His songwriting is unique and his guitar playing different. Its not my thing, but I can appreciate its impact.

That I understand but it seems that he is set at a much higher plateau than what his actual accomplishments really were.

Think about it does he deserve the 12th Spot on the greatest guitarist list ahead of people like Bo Diddley or Carlos Santana.....and would he have been placed that high if he was actually still alive and not tagged with the "Tragic Genius" moniker.

I do like Nirvana's Music so I'm not saying this for any specific reason

I'm usually a lurker around here because I don't consider myself an expert fisherman, but as a guitar player I'll chime in on this.

A few years ago I saw Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and a Texas songwriter named Joe Ely at Vets Aud. in Prov. They each played solo acoustic, took turns doing a song of their own and accompanied each other. Hiatt was fabulous! Halfway through the show my wife said, "Who's the guy in the middle? He's a way better guitar player than the other two."

When the "best guitar players" question is asked acoustic players are largely ignored. IMHO it's a hell of a lot easier to crank up the distortion and start bending strings than it is play an acoustic well, that is, to finger pick a melody and bass line together with the RIGHT hand. My additions to the list:

I totally agree with your comments on acoustic players, acoustic guitar is really the true test of a great guitarist if you ask me because it is just the man and the guitar. as rockport said the late 80's early 90's where filled with sex drugs and rock and roll.. unfortuneatly in that order... You can say but Kurt was a heroin addict.... but the difference is, it wasnt glorified. The music was. Cobains genius lies in the simplicity of the songs he wrote.. He's not the first to make simple songs sound amazing. A little band called the Beatles built their empire on I IV V.

Great guitarist, probably not in my top 10. Greatest creative mind... number 1. He, Nirvana, single handedly put rock music back on track killing the hair band scene.(we should all be thankful for that) By definition they left the alternative genre when Nevermind hit. But that's what music needed at the time. He tapped into that teenage angst and ran with it.

Basically Im just thankful rock and roll was pure again for quite a while. If nirvana popped up anywhere else in time i doubt they would have been as huge.

Danny Gatton to me was probably one of the most talented, unknown guys out there. He is gone, took his own life, much like Roy B. and similar but way more chops. Les Dudek, F.Z., Grant Green, Gary Moore, Dave Mason, Robben Ford, Robin Trower, Albert Lee, Joe Satriani, Tony Rice, Greg Howe, Alan Holdsworth, I mean you could go on forever. When you say underrated do you mean guys that are not commercially popular or do you mean people that are truley great players but are not household names. Do you consider unknow as underrated? Kind of goes hand in hand I think. P.

the whole 100 list thing is ridiculous because of course not everybody is going to agree, everybody has different tastes in music, some people like jam band type guitar style, some like blues, some like acoustic. who really cares who is the best? music is meant to be enjoyed, not compared to death.

He, Nirvana, single handedly put rock music back on track killing the hair band scene.(we should all be thankful for that) .

And Believe me I am Very Thankful of that.......When hair bands were the norm is when I embraced ZLX and all of the older music like never before. But I also don't think they Single-handedly did it. I think that Groups like Sound-Garden and Alice in Chains had a big hand in turning rock back into something worth listening to at the same time.

But that's what music needed at the time. He tapped into that teenage angst and ran with it. .

Its funny you mention this because this is always one of the Dis-agreements I have with my Bro-in-law. This is the one we become Really Heated about. He always say that Cobain was a genius because he tapped into what the youth were all about, especially in regards to Smells like teen spirit.

I used to say Gee, Teen Angst and a Disregard for the older generation.....like that hasn't been done before....I mean do we label Dee Snyder a genius because "We're Not Gonna Take It" or the Beatie Boys because they want us to "Fight For Our Right to Party"...its not genius to know that Kids are Pissed at thier parents

Basically Im just thankful rock and roll was pure again for quite a while. If nirvana popped up anywhere else in time i doubt they would have been as huge.

When Grunge came on the scene is when I started to listen and appreciate the newer bands again, Music was raw and actually Meant something again instead of Over-indulgence and Self-Serving BS that the hair bands were all about. and I believe that a lot of his success came from the fact that people were tired of that and wanted something with Substance again.

I guess its just me but I always feel like he gets elevated a lot higher than he really should be because of the Tragedy of his life.

Dee Snyder is actually a very smart guy. I was watching something on Vh-1 the other day about when parental advisory labels were issued to music. He was basically the spokesman for the hard rock bands of the time.

In no way am i saying it hasnt been done before believe me. Im just saying that the style he brought was needed at the time. if it wasnt, then nirvana would still have made music but hair bands would still rule.

I agree said bands help the turn... but you have to say nirvana paved the road.

What are bands tapping into today?? arnt teens still angry.....??? not according to the whiny crap i hear. again.. just an opinion

This is a great Thread to kill the day too. Its good to see what everybody's take is on music.

I like that metal list a little bit more, illustrates my point exactly, everybody has different tastes, you could have endless lists really.
How could we forget Nugent? If not for his guitar skills, but for his gut-busting style?
And speaking of gut-busting, what about Kyle Gass from Tenacious D?

One persons noise is another persons music. Is it not all noise? SRV is very good but, IMO and it is only my opinion, to compare him to several of the schooled jazz guitarist's such as Joe Pass or a Chet Atkins or Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour style I'd have to say no contest. Just my opinion so relax. Thank god everyone doesn't like the same flavor or it would be a boring world.

Those lists are always a crock, can't take them seriously. I'm a huge Nirvana fan but Cobain was no great guitarist. I would rank him slightly higher than Joan Jett :hihi:

I haven't seen someone mentioned that I think is way underrated.

Jeff Healy.

Don't think he's put out anything in years, but c'mon, the guys been blind since he was like 4 years old, plays with the guitar laying flat on his lap and he's better than half the people on those lists. Don't think he's good? Listen to Can You See The Light.

Man, you guys need to grow up! :jester: The "how many notes per second" thing is so boring. We have a GREAT guitarist right here in New England who can play rock, jazz, swing and especially BLUES better than just about anyone else: Duke Robillaird. If you've never seen him, get out there and do it! Class, style, soul - and he doesn't need to hide behind a distortion box to do it! Do yourself a favor and hear Duke.

Prof M, I am a practicing and performing jazz guitarist and I agree 100% with you on the talent of jazz vs many of teh names included on here. Eric Clapton could not get on stage and play through a basic jazz stanadrd like All the Tings You Are, he jusy couldnt. BUT.....I think you have to draw the line, jazz and rock are very differnet and really have differnet purposes. Jazz is sort of art for teh sake of art, some people can "hear" it, others cannot. Joe PAss and Wes Monthgomery are my favorites and major influences.
I began playing guitar in the early 80s and still enjoy Eddie VH, Vai, Satriani and Stevie Ray. As a jazz guitarist, I LOVE AC-DC, Angus is awesome, he plays with all he has and to me, its sounds cool.I was a huge LEd Zep fan but I rememeber first hearing Pride and Joy on the radio by SRV and saying, "man, I have to play that" and saved up to buy my first guitar. I thinks its not fair to say that jazz guys are way better, since its a differnet thing. The more I studied jazz, the more I started listening to old country guys, and western swing, old blues, swing, gypsy jazz. There is SO much music most of us have never heard becasue of exposure. I enjoy all of it.

ProfessorM
12-12-2006, 09:45 AM
I'll usually judge a guitarist by his knowledge of chords more than how loud and fast he can play. Don't get me wrong I like loud fast music but not everyone can do both. Listening to Tony Rice play chords on his Martin or Steve Morse with the Dregs is what floats my boat. It all depends what mood I am in. One day I like Ozzy next I'm listening to Harry Connick JR. There are just way too variables in styles to have a best. I like them all, well except Joan Jett. Very interesting listening to what different people listen too. Funny that we all like music but are turned off by certain things others like. Not a bad thing, just interesting.

ProfessorM

RIJIMMY My taste's have changed a lot over the years. I love jazz and I'd say 50% of my music I listen to now is Jazz. I am also on a Bluegrass and Celtic kick too the last several years. There is so much good music out there that is just overlooked by so many of the younger people because they are not exposed to it. I have a 6 year old that is taking piano lessons and I try to expose her to many different types of music so she can form a well rounded knowledge, with a emphasis on reading music. Reading opens so many doors in music. I wish I had learned. I think I prefer any music that combines different types or styles into their sound. The possibilities are endless. Joe Pass is really about as good as it gets when you talk about jazz guitar IMO.

Different = Stanley Jordan, how about Vince Gill the guy can play. Loud and fast Frank Marino. Woman Emily Remler. I mean if you really sit down and think of it you can come up with 100's of individuals' that can play the crap out of the instrument. I wish one was me. I gave up guitar 10 years ago. I have 2 Les Pauls, a Strat, and several acoustics just sitting in cases in my upstairs room that haven't been opened in years. My daughter doesn't know how lucky she will be if she wants to play guitar in the future. I'd rather listen to music than play it .

For pure technical skill most jazz players will have the edge. Even more so for drums than guitar.

Ok, a few more...this thread must not die...
I was thinking of RIR original intenet of this post last night and thought of two guitarists that, every time I have heard them, I was impressed with the solos, both style and originallity. I also think they both did not make the lists posted here because of the same reason....
1. Peter Frampton - the live stuff from Frampton comes alive, is excellent guitar playing. Style wise, he is a few notches above many of his 70's contemporaries, and yes, I mean a lot of the BIG 70's guitar names. Listen next time its on the radio, he does not play alot of the same "blues" based lines most other players do.
2. Neil Schon, from Journey. I think his playing is fantastic. The first few Journey albums were almost progressive rock and Schon plays some blistering leads. Even when Journey went lame, he still played very lyrical and tasteful solos. Great player IMHO.

Why do I think they are overlooked and underrated? Becasue of the "girl" appeal. Frampton was not taken seriously after his teeny bopper appeal. And Journey became a lame ballad teen age girl band. Both of these guys are great guitar players, very unique styles, technical and tasteful.....

Yes, RI J! Great name! As far as under- rated specifically, Schon is among the top of that list. Forget later/ commercial Journey. Do yourself a favor-- if you love/ appreciate great "heavy metal" Guitar skills, get the first few Journy albums (pre- S. Perry)... and I guarantee you Neil's playing will blow you away.

Equally under-rated, but still great (that "R.S. Top- 100 List" was a total joke! Retarded! :bshake: ):

Dave Mason/ Chris Wood (both!), from Traffic/ solo; Dave Davies/ Kinks; Santana; Tom Sholz from Boston-- agreed John. R.!... Randy Rhodes (he's NOT the "best Heavy Metal" guitarist ever?? Tony I. is ??) ... Gary Ritchrath from REO Speedwagon (yes, the early stuff!!)... Neil Geraldo/ Pat Benatar's band (1st three albums)... Blackmore yes... Beck is almost forgotten... Steve Howe no one even mentioned? Anyone ever hear of Martin Barre? (Jethro Tull-- awesome guitarist!)... the Cars Elliot Easton was under- rated (though not "great")...

I can go on, but won't!... As said, of course here re. music to each his own!

PS-I ate a pizza next to Dean and Gene after work one night in Jersey, had no idea it was them. Realized afterwards that I was like 5 miles from where they recorded "The Pod."

Thats embarrassing that Johnny Winter is #74. I think if you polled the guitarists on that list, most of them will talk about Johnny as big influences......if you could, just ask Muddy.

LeCounts1099

Trower was amazing no doubt!-- but I know who would've been the "white Hendrix" had he ONLY lived past age 23 or so...

I'm the #1 Hendrix fan I guarantee you! Love Clapton, Beck, Duane, Ronnie V.Z., David Gilmour, etc., etc. But I've never heard "heavy Metal" guitar- playing... OR gorgeous acoustic mellow pieces... like I heard on the first two Ozzy solo albums dominated by Randy Rhoads!

This kid went from unknown, to revitalizing Ozzys' career by a very young age! (Zack Wilde dreamed of being Randy-- didn't come close!) He was a child prodigy trained by his parents for a future in Classical music... 'till he decided the Electric guitar was his instrument... & that "Metal"/ power- Rock turned him on! His music on those 2 albums was not "Metal" really-- but the power chords & thunderous double- tracking solos produced some of the greatest guitar sounds ever heard certainly in the "hard" rock genre!

Talk Deep Purple... Iron Maiden... and Metallica or Eddie V. all you want-- in only 2 albums Randy blew them away!!-- and imagine what his 12th album WOULD have sounded like! Don't take my word for it: just put it on & play it loud! "Blizzard of Oz"... & "Diary of a Madman" are easily found. Tell me how many were better than he after hearing both!

Little known, is how Randy died so young: most figure drugs, choking on his own vomit, etc. Randy was a totally- clean California health- food/ wholistic- type raised by hippie parents... who didn't even drink! He was afraid his whole life of airplanes/ flying (as I admit am I too!)... yet he accepted a dare to go up in a small plane with others from the Ozzy tour to prove his bravery. He made the fatal mistake of overcoming his fear to say "yes," not knowing then that the pilot was (legally) drunk! That's what it took to stop the true next "modern/ white Hendrix"... :(

Who cares what a Guitarist looks like?-- I'd ask her... (Though Frank Z. was indeed a "looker!"). Who's uglier than Geddy Lee?-- yet he's the best bassist in modern "rock"...

If she wants a good- looking AND great guitarist-- again, that's Randy! Talent aside... I only wish I looked as good as he! :pop:

(The bastards in work are actually making me work. Putting a serious dent in my paid surfing time. They will be punished.)

Ronnie Van Zant?
Singer,vocalist,songwriter.
No comparison to R.R.
And my question (Lecounts99) is have you ever seen an all acoustic show in a club by Zakk Wilde? You should. Impressive.
Clapton,Beck,Floyd,Deep Purple, and probably Black Sabbath.
If it wasn't for at least one or all of them R.R. would probably have stayed with classical music.
He heard something that started him off.

And Ozzy revitalizes his career every few years. He's the best at it.
First it was R.R.
Then Zakk Wilde.
Then Ozzfest. Black Sabbath reunion.
Now it's free Ozzfest.

ProfM, I don't know if you were refering to ALVIN Lee of Ten Years After, but he could pick a lick as well. When he was banging out "I'm Goin' Home" at Woodstock (the REAL one!!), I thought his head was going to explode! Mine too.......TC:smokin:

No different guy, but he is good also but different style. Listen to the youtube song Bernzy posted you can get a real good idea how good Albert is. Phenomenal picker with his own style. A Barry Manilow look a like, poor guy.

I would add to the guys to check out Richard Thompson, Danny Gatton and Bob Brozman. Brozman has got to be the top slide player out there at the moment. Gatton was incredible, sort of like a cross between James Burton and Roy Buchanan, left us far too early. Richard Thompson has been around forever but he is not generally well known but can play up a storm on both electric and acousitc.
All of these guys have clips on you tube.

Ronson was not only a great guitar player but he could hold his own on stage in the presence of the bigger than life (gross understatement!) David Bowie. Some rather bizarre theatrics but never at the expense of the music. :grins:

Yeah but listening to CD's of the early Allmans... love hearing Duane...

Saw Leslie West (Mountain) w/Corky Lang on drums in Newport last summer, that was a great small club show and he can still wail...

You know who gets no love is Pete "Hope I die before I get old" Townshend saw the Who at Great Woods 5 or 6 years ago and he was still effortless...

OK, I love this thread! Yes, compelling between- working reading, & great info. & leads on new stuff to hear!

But: at times it has been about the "best" guitarists... & the best "unknown" or little- known names that most have never heard of, or their music... but back to the original question Bryan was asking (100's of pages ago!) :p ... who are the "most underrated?" To me that means, who has achieved the most as a Guitarist in music history (to me, that means "Rock"-- sorry!). WHO has been among the very best, & also has been in bands that sold millions of records-- yet few (even avid) rock fans know their names, though all have heard their playing/ songs?...

My most underrated: 1) James Honeyman- Scott, Pretenders
2) Neil Schon, Santana/ Journey
3) Randy Rhoads
4) Tom Scholz
5) Joe Perry

#'s 2- 4 I've discussed earlier here, as have others.

Joe Perry must be on this list, because most who know his name do so only linked to lame "new 'smith" songs like "Love in an Elevator," etc. All the fans of this "new" Aerosmith would hate the "old" Aerosmith-- because the songs back then were killer audio/ stereophonic assaults!... and Joes' guitar was always blistering! His work on "Toys..." and "Rocks" alone would make him an all- time "heavy" Rock guitarist... but the earlier stuff was even better, esp. the 1st album (more raw & bluesy). IMHO Joe was way better in his prime then were Eddie VH or Slash or James Hetfield, talented as they were/ are! (I'm quite sure Slash would admit he patterned everything-- his look and guitar-style-- after Joe P.! Maybe you'd have to get him drunk first!)

And Tom Scholz?-- WHO knows that name? Yet who doesn't own and/ or love the first Boston album?? Yes, the drums, bass & songs/ lyrics & vocals were all phenomenal too... but Toms' guitar stole the show on every song! Totally unique sound too, another sign of guitar greatness: you KNOW when you're hearing Duane, Gilmour, Beck, Hendrix-- or Tom S.! No mistaking any for any other player! Most of what Eddie V. did in his (so- short) "prime" was mimicking what guys like Trower, Beck & Jimi did before him... in front of the least- talented backing band imaginable (worst rock bassist ever: Michael Anthony!)... with terribly- written songs! ("Jump" stupidest song in "hard/ heavy- Rock" history!)

OK, to our subject: which "unknown" guitarist luckily (or by good choosing) had an AWESOME band behind him... and with one of Rock history's most charismatic front- men (ahem, front- women!). If all you've ever heard of the Pretenders was "Brass in Pocket" or "Back on the Chain Gang" then you'll have to take my word for this ('till your own research!): the Pretenders were one of the greatest bands in Rock history (not "top- 10" but def. "top- 20")-- in TWO albums only!-- and much of this was due to their amazing guitar- player, James Honeyman- Scott! :btu:

Again, like poor Randy R., it was two great masterpieces (albums) and gone from this World for poor James (in this case it WAS drinking/ drugs)... so any curious to prove me wrong have little material to hear & judge! "Pretenders (One)" and "P. Two" were the albums... songs to make you instant believers are: "Mystery Achievement"; "The Wait"; "Private Life"; "The Adultress"; "Space Invader"... Hard/ rockin' cuts mix with mellow/ acoustic/ melodic ballads sung with such depth & soul by Chrissy... and James plays accordingly with equal beauty. Sometimes hard & driving & "metal"- ish... sometimes wispy or acoustic or background. The drummers' top- notch, the bassist is amazing (& also died young)... and Chrissy's voice & style back then made her a lasting Rock icon (though she tarnished this by doing crappy pop stuff after James & Pete died). :poke:

Simply listen... or listen again if it's been a while! Yes, there are better guitar- players you'll say... but how great is this guy to be a no- name??... now to be nearly/ completely forgotten? :grins:

Couple more I thought of lately as I got a fantastic album and they were both on it. Mike Stern and Hiram Bullock. You might remember Hiram on David Sanborns great album Voyer, along with Steve Gadd, RR. and the original Letterman guitarist. Both are very underrated.

You want to hear some sick $#!+ pick up the Vital Techtones album. Scott Hendersen Victor Wooten and a great drummer whose name escapes me. Scott Hendersen is from a band called Tribal Tech, his playing is reminiscent of Steve Morse maybe a little Satriani in there too. Vic is the bass player and if you don;t know of him, you HAVE to hear him. He plays bass for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (also a great band). Victor has won Bass player of the year the last 3 or 4 years running. Check it out.

You know who gets no love is Pete "Hope I die before I get old" Townshend saw the Who at Great Woods 5 or 6 years ago and he was still effortless...

Townsend was the lord and master of the power chord which worked so well with Who music but he was never a pickin' and pl#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&' master like SlowHand, Beck, Stevie Ray, Buddy Guy, Jimi and some of the other great ax men.:btu:

Townshend was fantastic. You don't have to be lightning fast to be good in my book. Saw them in the 70's, :spin: I think, at Boston Garden. Moon passed out on stage at the drums if I remember correctly, show ended early. It is all a blurr at point. Quadrophenia is one of my favorite albums still to this day. P.

Had to put my 2 cents in.
Tom Scholz? Guitarist? Only a guitarist?
First and foremost an engineer.
Masters degree in electronic engineering from MIT?
(There are parts of MIT that look like Air Force barracks because they are Air Force barracks)
One thing to master the instrument you play.
Whole other thing to redesign it.
And build it.
AND play it.

Have several Bill Frisell albums. I like em. Different for sure, but I like em.
E. Reed at Filmore is one of my favorites for sure. I just like that one riff sort of at the beginning where the guys yells out after Duane plays it. I also like the Enlighten Rouges album which i think is one of Betts's best work. Check out Sea Level if you haven't already Don. Great stuff with Chuck Levell, keyboards doing most of the heavy lifting and some Allman band members. I have all their albums but not much on cd. Great stuff.

I think most of the intro on Liz is #^&#^&#^&#^&ie playing, not Duane  But I'll have to listen to it again to be sure. Duane hits the stratosphere at the end, after Gregg's organ solo.

:uhuh:

#^&#^&#^&#^&ie Betts.. def. underated,
and,, he knew how to stand in Duane's shadow...
heard him says once, when asked why he didn't try to shine more...
in the early years, before Duane passed...
He said.. "Think about it.. What is the name of the band??"

#^&#^&#^&#^&ie was good, but he was nowhere near as good as Duane. Trying to outshine Duane would have been impossible anyway. He still had his moments on the Fillmore East album--he has some of the longer solos on stuff like You Don't Love Me and Whipping Post :humpty:

Duane himself, though, had a very high opinion of Betts' playing. He'd tell anyone who'd listen that "Brother #^&#^&#^&#^&ie's as good as anyone"

Mike P
03-13-2007, 11:39 AM
Listened to the Fillmore East live version this AM on the commute.

It's #^&#^&#^&#^&ie on the into. Then #^&#^&#^&#^&ie and Duane carry the melody for three choruses. Sometimes in unison, sometimes with Duane playing harmony and/or ad lib riffs around Betts' lead. Then, it's #^&#^&#^&#^&ie's solo, followed by Gregg's organ solo, Duane's solo, a short drum break, and the final chorus with both guitarists again carrying the melody.

LeCounts1099

Both Duane and #^&#^&#^&#^&ie were amazing... I guess #^&#^&#^&#^&ie the "under-rated" one then... Duanes' a legend!

I mentioned that Clapton's "Just One Night" was a "top- 3" Live Guitar performance album of all time-- turns out I recalled three even better:

1) Jimi Hendrix Exp. "Live w/ Band of Gypsies"
2) Allmans "Live at the Fillmore East"
3) Jeff Beck "Live w/ the Jan Hammer Group"

None of these three are underated... except maybe as live performers? (IF all you've ever heard/ seen live of Jimi's was "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock... "Band of Gypsies" 100+ times better musically! :btu:

Regardless of who writes the top 100 or whatever genre it is...it is saying the 100 best guitarists of all time....to say Kurt Cobain is even on that list...or at the number he is...is a HUGE stretch...it isn't saying the most influential person of all time....skill wise Kurts songs are a joke...they are good and rocked for that time, but anybody who picks up a guitar can play most of their songs, his talent was in his lyrics. Thats like saying Bradley from Sublime should be on there...aint gonna cut it(favorite band is sublime but still) gotta call them as you see them. And to not have Slash on it is CRAZY....he should be in top 20 for sure. Especially from Rolling Stone, sure you will have discrepencies about who picks who, but the fact is 1/4 of those names on that first list aren't great guitarists.....where is Prince? That man can play any instrument you put in front of him. The fact that Joan Jett is on there and Jerry Garcia, Guitarist from Skynyrd, and Randy Rhodes isn't on there is heart breaking....
