I am still hoping this deal falls through! This will come to be known as "Theo's Folly"! To pay this kind of money for an unproven talent who has ZERO major league experience is just ridiculous!!! Of all of the Japanese talent that has come into the league in recent years, only 2 have cut the mustard.....Ichiro Suzuki and Hidecki Matsui! I predict this guy falls on his keester and takes millions of the Sox dough with him!!! Bad, bad move! You will come to see my prediction is quite accurate!

Oh....and pretty low per year....add the $51,000,000 dollars they had to pay the Japanese team just to talk to him!!! So if they pay him 10,000,000 a year....add another 10,000,000 dollars to that.....its costing the Sox around $20,000,000 dollars a season for this "Great" pitcher!!!!!:eek5:

You guys are pretty negative people eh? Typical New Englanders... I agree that the posting price was astronomical, but I have watched a lot of his games and I think you're going to see that this guy is the real deal... we shall see.

And when I say "low per year" I only say it b/c of Bore A$$ and his rep... Mat's no bargain... this deal will NOT fall though, not after the skanks signed Pet tit...

This could be a disaster for the Sox if they sign him and he flushes out! Not negative Dave just realistic! I think they could have better spent that kind of money!

They key word is "could" he also "could" be a wonderboy... I think you'll see him somewhere in between... 16M for the washed up petitte or 19 for a young up and comer.... who knows... We should close this thread and re-open it in July... one of us will be sticking their foot in their mouth... might be me might be you  :jester: Only time will tell Larry-San :bounce:

PS....that was stupid money the Yanks paid for Petite....what has he ever done??? Win a Cy Young award???? Big freakin deal.....try winning 2 or 3! I hard from a buddy of mine said the Sox are trying "again" to get Roger to come back....but he said it was contingent on whether they sign Datsu....ummmm....Dashe.....ahhhh.....on Dasher, on Dancer on Prancer and Vixen!:wall:

bf, you a sox fan?!? I thought all those feelings went away in 04. A 26 yo phenom almost in the fold and you are poo-pooing ALREADY? Have you seen him at all? Besides, after 04, I give them 10 years, for free. I don't care WHAT they do right now. Honeymoon's still on baby. It's the honeymoon with the Pats that will be coming to an end if they don't turn it around to make a decent postseason showing this year. btw, nesn just showed dice k going into mass general for the physical. Any minute now......

I really like this deal. It is way better than the 11/6 that Boras had been originally seeking. If it is 52/6 as reported, that is like 8.66 per year. Considering Gil Meche, whose lowest ERA is 3.78, singed for 55/5, I think Matsuzaka is a steal at the price we paid for him (His HIGHEST ERA is 3.97 once and all others are lower than 3.6).

Lots of people will say, "Yeah, but we had to pay 52 million to post, so it is really, 104 million over 6 years or around 17 Million per year". However, to them, I have to agree with Boras. The Sox (and every other team) could have waited two more years and avoided posting that amount. And if he were a free agent this year, it is likely Dice-K would have negotiated a price WAY over 11 million per year. So we had to pay a little premium to get his services early, but in the long run it took money off the top of Dice-K's contract and ensured we wouldn't have to compete with other teams down the road.

So I say great deal!

I like the looks of that rotation VERY much! But I'm not sure how long Wake stays in the starting rotation. He has always been successful out of the pen and his back might not be completely healed. I wouldn't be too suprised to see Tavares getting turns in the rotation if Wake falters at all after Julian's late season success in that role last year.

Theo should be fired, this is a joke.
I don't like the D-Mat thing,a lot of things just don't make sense?
Bad move after bad move.
Bringing back Mirabelli a guy that can't hit his weight.
A personal catcher for a pitcher that stunk out loud last season.
Let alone the fact that they gave up a great young pitcher and catcher to get him.
I guess we will have to wait and see.

Take a good look folks, this kid is the future of the Red Sox.

This is the best deal I have seen in a while from the Sox,

Best Or Bomb ... Everyone in the WORLD will be watching him and our RedSox team, With John Henry getting a % or the pie. Around the globe people will be waiting to see what his next pitch will be.

I am most happy because the Dam Yankees did not get him and we pulled the trigger first. They just plain Sux

And BigFish .... I hope you get a bobblehead of this kid before they are sold out :bl:

Can someone tell me what other starting pitchers we could have signed? Not a lot out there. Zito? I don't consider him the answer. Did you look at the Free Agent list of pitchers this year.....terrible. At least they are TRYING to put quality pitching out there. would you guys like to go back to the Lou Gorman days......Only interested in you if you're over 40

If the front office doesn't do anything........ they Suck.

Everytime they do something ..........they Suck

It seems as Boston Fans are never happy unless they're bitchin about something. Christ, the Pats have won 3 of the last 5 superbowls and people are bitchin. Lets see what the kids got 1st.

this is an excellent point. where else were they getting starting pitching? anybody that is already signed on another team is going to be nearly impossible to get in a trade. i give the sox credit for being proactive for a change.

two things that could change everything though.....
1) they don't get a closer. Donnelly (sp?) is not a closer. a nice bullpenn addition, but not a closer.
2) they trade manny for 60-80 cents on the dollar. drew will wilt under the boston pressure if he expected to play 150 games, hit 35 hrs and drive in 125+ runs all the while protecting ortiz in the line-up. ortiz will be walked 200+ times if manny goes.
