Christmas is over, Plugfest coming, time to start building. Come on you guys, Eddy, Flap, Paul, others.......whatcha hiding? Here are two to get the juices flowing. Gave a third to Flap.....which is a waste 'cause he's got too many to start........a fourth is waiting for a repaint. Did pretty well with these things this year, even better with the bigger ones.

Okay, here's what I have started lately. The needle with the bent thru wire weighs 2-3/4 oz. and should tend bottom well or keep down in a running tide. The big danny has a modified NJ Tackle atom lip I bent up myself.

All but a few are recent, about 20 more waiting for some wire to come in so I can assemble. About another 65 bodies turned/sanded waiting to be drilled.

I gotta get to work on needles soon for the bag .. want to fish knockoff Pichney pocket rockets next year . Had darter revelation to stop splitting want to work on that.. Lots to do so little time .. I wish winter was longer ,.:as: .. You taught me handcarve last year George .. thanks for that... is 4 hrs a long time to make a body ?.. Crash .. Blue/whites look mint .. can you slow sink them ,, vary depth slightly adjusting speed of retrieve ? even bring them on top at slow retrieve ..

The blue thing are off center turned swimmers. found them in the reject box and finished them. The little squids are very slow sink level needles. One of my staple plugs, a skin will fit over them, too. Clinton cobwebs, they realy light up in the flash, don't they? :spidey: On the little blue things that look like Minne Balls are skin jigs, maple filled with lead. They'll also carry a curly tail.

Do it by eye. It is not too difficult. Lay out the rearward shape with a template, waste out most of it on a band saw, push it into the right sized sanding drum until even with the "brow" (you don't want to undercut the brow too much), then roll it and sand back to the layout lines, touch it up with a file. The difficult part is weighting them. This one has a tail weight and chin weight, ala Mr Pogey, but it doesn't swim as well as a Gibbs except at one specific retrieve speed. The next batch, waiting for paint, are weighted like the Gibbs, 1/4" slugs along the thru wire, all the way to the front hook hole. I'd love to get my hands on a Musso to see how he did it, and I think Pinchney also made one, though there's probably no chance of ever finding one of those.

BBJ -- Like the 40, but especially like the reverse atom. :claps: Any trouble thru driling to get the wire eye in place where you have it? Did you drill to the hook hole in the rear and drill from the front to that hole? How does it swim? I have been meaning to try that plug scaled down just a little. Using a single hook in the center. :bl:

I drilled from the fat end to where the line attaches. Then I start the other end straight in and thed turn toward the rear. The way I've weighted them they lay dead flat in the water, because of where the line loop is it will leap up if twitched hard or slide if swept. It will also walk the dog. I only used a tail and a belly hook because a third hook is a PIA if you're not killing everything you catch. It's a plug that never was- a wooden reverse 40.

Used pine, since I think that's what the Gibbs were/are. Weighted them along the wire, all the way to the front hook. Not sure I have that right yet, but I'm getting closer. Got a few AYC as well, and have been thinking about trying maple........either of you guys any experience with maple bottles?........made one a couple of years ago that was a dud but I think I had the lip wrong then. I also shaped these more along the lines of a Musso than a Gibbs, the latter which has the shoulder closer to the neck, I'm starting to think the Gibbs shape may swim better. Along the same lines, here is a weak knockoff of a Musso littleneck swimmer (after I got outbid by a ton for one on ebay)............same shape as a bottle, but the weighting is a mystery so far.

had good luck with bottle darters .. fattys and Larry Welcome type .. I used hard maple and weighted just back of belly hook like 1/2",,, darted well on moderate retrieve and even did a little swim wiggle on slow retrieve..Once I weighted a pikie around the thru wire up front like they did .. Rolled like a bastard .. I never made a bottle plug .. Have a Gibbs that rolls out imediately on retrieve . I think Larry Welcome uses something lighter ... maybe Larry will chime in and tell us .. he does look in once and a while .

NS - I have been making bottles for a while now and found that the gibbs was the better one to work with. The plug is weighted just the same as the gibbs polaris. The weight is a 1/4" round slug 1 3/4" long. 2 equal pieces all from the tail to the front. There is a piece between the hooks. There is no chin weight in the plug I have. I am attaching a couple of photos of that plug. The critical part of the bottle plug is that lip and the curve with the sides angled back from the center point where the wire eye is.. The plug is 3 ounces.:wid:

Numskull -- my plug has brass also. I was surprised to see the 1/4" lead. Again, the secret is in the lip! I have 10 or 20 that I made that were junk. I tried everything to get the lip right and finally used a dremel with a flapper sanding wheel to shape it to where it works well.

It is a good plug in the ditch when the current is just right. You can feel it wiggling like mad. Casts like a rocket also.

Nice bottles for sure, I weight my AYC one in the tail and under the chin, the maple ones get a weight just behind the hook which is forward of center and again in the chin... I like the X ray shots....

Here are some needles and a few darters I finished this week...

big fish on, whats the weight on the plug?

A few to liven it up. The strange one is an upsized knockoff of a Pfluger plug called a Tantrum minnow. Didn't get it right and haven't swum it yet, but what the hell, always fun to try something new.

You may not think it is right, but if you finished it you have a good idea it will swim OK.

You seem to have the bottle down perfect. The angle on the mouth is real good. We have to get together at plugfest for a couple of minutes so that I can learn your secret. Did you use a dremel to get the proper angle?:chatter

Which is a knockoff of the west coast salmon plugs aka J Plugs.

Yeah, there is some resemblance, but the source I have says it was an upsized version of their Poprite minnow. I've only seen pictures, but it looks to me like they may have used a Ballerina body. Should have more taper to the body and the slope on the head is supposed to have a concave shape as well as the lip. I bet it will tend to roll out, but we'll see.

Cool stuff. Very simple but subtle at the same time. Darter planes top and bottom, tapered body with big head to get some sway, bucktail for a jointed effect. Do you weight them so they sink close to level, slightly tail down? Looks like you might be onto something good there.

I'm knocking off plastic and some G2's not ready yet . This is Cordells Big-O ,,, Gary2 also inspired by this plug .. bottom one is real deal .

I hope to have a partial "unveiling" this weekend on what is being and been built for the '07 season. Course a couple are top secret till the plugfest as I am torn as to which of several will be entered. I rather like having that dilemma for once. I know I will get smoked by a handcarve but the most fun is the anticipation of what we will be up against.

yep , patina, that's what it is :D

OK, I'll bring the one and only I have that matched the first one I made. Tried to duplicate it, but haven't succeeded quite yet.

Well George, it's close enough. I don't like belly grommets anymore. That danny blank was one of 2 out of 24 that was heavy for some reason, so we'll see how she swims.

NICE stuff Tagger :kewl:
what kind of wood are those alien plugs anyway? Back when I made them I used red cedar for their lightness and they swam great as long as I was precise with the body profile.
You Have to do some trading with me at the fest OK

Something new that I've been playing with lately. Wood version of a rattle trap. A hair under 1 oz. Two rattle chambers. Slow sinkers. A couple of views cause its hard to get a decent photo with the flash from them. The top two have foil on the sides. Used some prizm tape on the sides of the bottom one.

... I need foil lesson ...

Actually, foil on a flat sided plug like those is pretty simple. Seal and prime as usual. Apply some glue stick or 3M adhesive to the plug. Attach foil and smooth it out with your fingers. Trim the edges with a razor. Use a smooth object (I used a sharpie) to smooth out the foil real well. I then used a handle from a racket (had a nice pattern on the grip) to do the scales. Just roll it over top. Do a light coat of epoxy over the plug. Paint as usual when dry. If you mess up the paint, you can just wipe it off and go again. Clear coat as usual.
