For those that are Lurkers and have less than ten posts, say hello on this thread, a little bit about yourself if you want, and participate a bit on the forums and have a chance to win a couple plugs :btu:

Thanks!

Long time lurker, first time typer. Hi, and thanks to everyone for teaching me a lot this last year. This forum has kept me laughing and learning and now that the ice is broken perhaps I'll chime in a bit.

Thank you JohnR for making me do this. I wanted a chance to win those plugs but didn't want my first post to be for a free plug. Now the second post that's different.:D

Plugs?! I'm in. Grew up on the elbow of CC. My dad and I fish pretty exclusively on the big beaches and the Race for Stripahs and from the boat for Tuna.

I last fished the outgoing AM tide at Scorton's on December 27th. I got skunked on sluggo's, small shad and plastic minnows, tiny deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s, but I did get to test out the new Hab's my dad got me for Xmas. (Are we allowed to say we got skunked here?!). Currently in law school, and moving North soon, so my fishing time over the next few years will be pretty much weekend warrior status, but will still be hitting it hard whenever I am there visiting.

Best Fishing Story (actually my Dad's): Back in the early 80's when my dad and his friend were out fishing 6 nights a week, he was on the Race and he was staking out High Head and his buddy was at the other end, and they were going to meet up if either got into fish. Well, the CCNS Ranger who knew my dad and buddy well from fishing drives to my dad and says, "Hey, you know your buddy is heavy into a blitz..." and then dries away. While my dad is packing up his gear the Ranger drives to my Dad's buddy and says, "Hey, you know your buddy is heavy into fish." So he also packs up his gear, both drive towards one another and meet in the middle...when they get out of the truck, the Ranger just drives by laughing...

I have lurked here for years. I am active on a few other boards that are centered on the areas I fish (Jersey, DelMarVa, NC) but I enjoy keeping my mind open and current to what other areas are doing.

I have been surf fishing for 35 years and fish on a highly competitve team in New Jersey tournaments. For my own fun and enjoyment I fish Island Beach State Park and Brigantine with trips south a few times a year. I also distance cast and enjoy making rods and other tackle. I bait fish 75% of the time and my tackle and techniques show that. I am a proponent of modern spinning tackle as being on par and even eceeding the performace of conventional gear for casting and fish-fighting.

I would like to try the Ditch and the Cape and maybe the Islands (ferry toll :eek5:  ) this upcoming year, some of the action up there sounds mighty enticing!

I've been registered since May of '04 and I have just started posting here in the "long cast spinning reels (http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/showthread.php?t=36955)" thread; I hope I have some worthwhile info to share.

Guilty as charged... i guess i should expand on my post a bit.

Been fishing since i was 4 years old ( 31 now :( ) .I remember my first trip with dad catching porgies off the beach. Dad taught me everything i know and love about fishing off the surf. I have a bunch of his old photos from his cape trips and wish i could have been fishing with him. Some of the pictures are both amazing and sad at the same time because of the number of bass that were killed for just .25 cents a pound.

I am married with a 8 month old baby girl and look forward to the day we can fish together on the beach and catch bass/blues. Wall street is my 9 to 5 and fishing is how i get to relax and recharge.

Thanks for this site john. Glad the office has not blocked it due to all the plug porn...

Innkeeper, etc. on BI and started fishing from the surf a few years ago. Fish at least once almost every day of the season; before, after, and sometimes during work. Picked up a fishing kayak last year for daytime and had a blast. Will try an old 21' Steiger Chesapeake next year for fluke and family fishing, as surf and kayak are not young-kid friendly. Will undoubtedly run and gun for bass/blues/bonita/albies on light tackle as well. (Yes, I know the fish will not count.)

Learned everything I know from Joe Lyons, and from this site. This is one of the only websites I visit on a daily basis. It has made me a MUCH better fisherman, not just in fish-catching technique, but handling and releasing the fish and respecting the resource as well.

In defense of us lurkers, most active members on this site have a lot of experience and I generally don't feel like there's much of value I can add. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate it A LOT! Someday I hope to be able to contribute more.

I didn't post for the plugs (but I'll take 'em), just to let you guys know that this site is an incredible resource for us beginners and improves the sport and aids the fishery.

Hi i,m from methuen,ma. I do a lot of lurking because you guys are a wealth of information. I fish the upper merrimack rver in the ealy spring when the stripers are chasing the herring up. We kill em (catch and release for the most part). Big fish and plenty of them. Late spring i fish the mouth of the river and Plum Island till the middle of november. I've fished these waters since i was a kid with my dad and now i fish with my son. Even after all these years there is always something to learn. If you want to catch fish you have to be willing to adapt and learn new things. Thanks to all the members of S-B for the great info. I also enjoy the closeness a lot of your members share, they're like family to each other. Best of luck to all in the coming season and keep posting it really helps get me through a long winter.

Nothing wrong with lurking mind you, just not anywhere near as good as particpating in out little S-B community  :rotf2: :smash: :buds:

Guess Im a lurker. Mostly for the fishing stories and to get advice on reels/rods. I do enjoy this forum and some of you guys should be comedians. Been fishing pretty hard the past few years with some quality fish to show for it. It's been in my blood since the mid-70's since my dad took me out on the beaches overnight in Weekapaug (did I just spot burn :uhoh: ). Now live in Middletown RI with my wife, 2 year old son and another on the way in April. Mostly fish the rock piles in NPT.

Happy New Year

you didn't give me a chance to be a lurker, just signed up. I'm a 22 year old grahpic designer in Long Island. 2nd year into surf casting, learning a lot and love it. Fished freshwater all my life, but saltwater seems to be my main thing right now. That's pretty much it.

Hello all

I've been lurking on this site more and more recently now that I've been bitten by the plug-building bug. This site has a wealth of knowledge on the subject that cannot be beat. I'm small potatoes right now, just carving with a dremel and using screweyes, but hopefully one day I will get a lathe. This hobby (or addiction) is ridiculously fun.

Oh, and this past year was my first fishing the surf. I've fished sweetwater since I was a kid, but gave the salt a go in the spring and there is no turning back. Someone asked me recently why I fished only saltwater this year and I told him "the fish are bigger!" I've lost a lot of sleep but made up for it with a mess of schoolies, a lot of blues, and one keeper, which was let loose to fight again and hopefully breed other keepers.

Anyways, thanks for the opportunity.

Well I guess I'm a lurker. Let's see I'm 23 originally from the South Shore of Mass and grew up on fishing the Cape beaches. Then I got into freshwater bass fishing and do that pretty seriously. I'm now down in Charlestown, RI working on my masters, so I don't have much time to do the freshwater stuff. Because I can't not go fishing I've been getting back in striper fishing. Therefore, I poke around on this site and a few others trying to pick up all the knowledge that I can.

Hello all! I'm a Lurker, 30, and have been boating out of Onset most of my life with my parents. Always wanted to go fishing, but never could get them to take me out as often as I would have liked. Now that I finally bought my own boat, with last year being my 1st full season, I go as often as I can. Not too successful with stripers yet, buy I sure can get those damn bluefish! I've contributed to a few posts, but I am mostly looking to see how well everyone else is doing. Hopefully I can share my good fortunes better next year!

BTW, this is a great site! I really enjoy it, and hope it never go away! Thank you!

I'm a lurker also.

Grew up in Stonington, CT and surf fished from there over to Charleston and BI. We also fished the Watch Hill Reefs, Fishers Island and other spots. Moved to northern Maine in 1984 but like to keep in touch with striper fishing. Its a long cast from here.

I'm here  Just started surf casting this past summer as a way to spend some quality Dad time with my son. Another member whose name says it all. I've got a lot to learn still, but I've learned a lot here already. Skunked last year partially due to not being able to put in the time, and partially because I'm clueless:huh:

Hopefully this spring I'll be a little wiser and get the boy into some schoolies early to keep him interested. We spent most of our fishing time on PI last year and I'm starting to know the layout a bit better. Maybe I'll find some fish soon :)

New to this site. Live in New Jersey. Post on a few other sites more local to my area. I enjoy all types of fishing. Spend the spring flyfishing for trout and plugging for stripers and blues. The summer drifting for fluke and the fall chasing stripers. The winter is reserved for a few party boat bottom fishing trips and steelhead on the Salmon River. I have fished in Chatham on the cape but was looking around for a place in New England to do a striper trip this june. Any recommendations?

Hi John and all the S-B.Com Members ,,,

I have been a member here since the spring of "2005" and have been logging on everyday since.. I havn't been too active of a member I guess
since I am a little ways from your core member base here around the New England area.. But I really like the quality of fishing related
talk from some of the best surfcasters and plug makers along the entire Atlantic Coast IMO...

About myself >
Born and raised in Philly, grew up fishing the sweetwater around my hometown of the Fairmont Park area..Moved to New Jersey back in "1983" and have been fishing the surf, jettys and backbays of Central & Southern Jersey since..
I have been a active member of numerous online fishing communities
in NJ since "2000" ,helping out my fellow fishermen and moderating many different fishing forums and still do today and love every minute of it...
And I hope to become more involved here aswell this year....

I have met in person or through the internet some of you from my latest passion of custom plug fishing,, always been a artficial guy but some of the plugs you guys are making today are just awesome and I spend alot of time throwing wood these days...
So I want to say "Thanks" to the likes of John (Habs), Mike (Tattoo) Ryan Smith, Dave (MAC) and Eben for hooking me up with some of your lures, and also Joe Lyons (SRI), Pete (SWE) aswell...

Happy New Year To Everyone And Good Luck Out On The Water In "2007"

I'm a lurker and I admit it. This is my second post on this forum. I am JohnR's sister and "#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&'s" wife. How many of you feel bad for me???? :bc:

I lurk on the site to read Raven's latest Clammer adventure (HILARIOUS!!!:jester: ), to see the pics of my friends/family and their fish, to read the latest post my husband has put out there, and to find out my brother's "weekend plans". There I said it.....complete honesty!!

I don't read these forums to find out where to fish and how to fish. When I go with Billy, he puts me right on the fish with the bait/tackle I need and shows me what to do. How's that for service!!

Now let me get back to obscurity and lurking!!:cputin:

(please forgive the slight bit of Brit humor, such as it is....:D )

Very much a (determined) learner, with only a few year's experience following the striped siren, but definitely addicted to surfcasting SoCo RI (at least, as much as possible with a very understanding wife and two small daughters......). Landed up to a 20 lber from the suds in 2006, and previously I have made the aquaintance of a 40 lb cow off the Block, too.

Through this forum and the clubs I have been meeting the characters and getting faces to names (Hi JohnR, Woody et al!).

As to the charge of lurking per se, I have been trying to speak when I have something that I can add - but I've only got a fraction of the experience of a lot of the posters here. And yes, I have been posting even without the lure of the lures!!

Still, all the best to one and all, and April seems a looong way off at the moment........:spin:

You‘ll know me, know how I earn a livin’. I’ll contribute to this board, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Like a badass fluke. Not like goin down to the pond chasin’ bluegills or Tommy Cods. This board, swallow ya whole, little shakin’ little tenderizin’, down ya go…………
It’s not gonna be pleasant, I value my neck a lot more than two plugs chief. I’ll dabble for two but I’ll stop being a lurker and opine for ten. You gotta make up your minds. Do ya wanna stay alive and ante up or do ya wanna play it cheap and be bored on fishin’ withdrawl welfare all winter.
I don’t want no volunteers don’t want no mates, there’s too many captains on this board.
10 plugs for me by myself. For that you get the sarcasm, the weak attempts at humor, the whole damn thing.

ok... got me.
First post.
Moved to the MA South Shore last year. New job. Fished RI, SoCo for years, surf. Grew up there.
Have been hunting for shore fishing between Duxbury and the Cape.
But still travel to RI in the fall. As the Id implies, I fish, and I golf in Western MA. Each cuts into the time of the other... not a bad problem to have. Hoping stay more local for both the golf and the fishing this season.

Thanks:wavey:
Happy New Year to everyone

I am not a lurker but I have just started to post after a long absence.

I live in the SF Bay area but I hail from New York. I am an ardent fisherman and fish, on the average, about once a week. All my fishing is either in the ocean or in SF Bay. My favorite fishing is for salmon but I also go for halibut, tuna, sturgeon, rockfish (we call them rock cod but they are not the same as your cod), sandabs (when nothing else is open), and dungenness crabs (which are open now).

For my first 20 years living here the only fishing I did was when I went back east to visit family, which was twice a year. These visits were always the highlight of my year. I would fish with my brothers in law Rob and Sal. Most of what I knew about ocean fishing I learned from them. Bluefish, stripers, cod, fluke, and tuna in the summer and big stripers in October. About 6 years ago my wife reminded me that there is an ocean where we live and I should try to get out fishing here.

Out here there a fishing bulletin boards like this one. I posted that I was interested in going out and I got some replies; and so my career as a recreational fisherman in California began.

Out here we have a program that is called hitch hikers. A hitch hiker is a person that either does not own a boat or has a boat out of commission and wants to get out on the briny. The program works very well seeing that the costs of fishing are great and only getting greater. Hitch hikers share the cost of the trip (splitting gas, bait, ice and any other fees ,like launch fees) with other members of the crew. They also assist, when called upon, to run the boat and of course help with the boat cleaning when the trip is finished. The relatiionship between the hitch hiker and the captain can be ongoing or just for that trip, you know how that goes. I am a hitch hiker and have been one all the time I have fished out here.

Well that is about it except to say that if you are in the area let me know. If you have any questions about fishing on the west coast PM me.

Thanks for listening.

I'm in!:bounce:

Starting out as a kid with a snapper pole on the Great South Bay, moved up to a zebco...until I was 6 was living for fishing...then got into other sports and didn't get called back to the water until 1999- at that time I was stuck in an office, hating it, and dreamt about escaping from the computer and the meetings and fishing until I finally did it- quit and swore I would do nothing but fish until I got sick of it, and work just enough to keep the ball rolling until that point....that had a momentum all its own, the hypnosis of day after day night after night on the water, building rods, trying to learn the craft, trying to put in time on the water...the spell didn't break until the end of 2002 on the rocks of Rhode Island- just felt like I was free to go on and do other things...not so much as a breakthrough but a realization...these days, don't get on the water as much as I would like, so I am trying to focus on the more analytical side of fishing- analyzing my logbooks, doing more research on fish behavior, patters, etc... nerdy stuff, but I'm into it.

I saw the link to this board a few weeks ago when I was looking at Mike Laptew's blog and signed on...happy to be aboard!

Not trying to be a lurker, but what can i add to your knowledge from the desert that you could use? if you want day by day temps you would burn me in effigee before spring and pity me in summer. Me, I'm just counting the days till VACATION and its Hull Ma. here i come. Fish take warning. I have charts on the wall for planning the best use of my time on the water.

Yes, I am a lurker also. This past season was my first serious attempt. I prefer fly fishing, but also like to fish light tackle with a preference of soft plastic baits. I have been fishing primarily out of Westport River and Harbor. I have learned some good information from this site. Thanks.

Thanks for the warm welcome Raven, glad to be aboard here. As for the nerdy stuff, does it make sense that the farther away from the water I am, everything gets more complicated, while when I'm on the water for a consistent period of time, everything starts to simplify...tackle bag gets smaller, amt. of gear carried gets smaller, and quite honestly the amount of time for thinking about all the different variables and factors imacting the fishing and tinkering with gear just disappears, to the best of my recollection...

well driving all the way to lake mead 200+ miles up highway 93
to catch some striped bass is a long haul im sure....
but it's not so bad if you and some friends split the gas and go as a group.

or you could all chip in and rent a house boat on lake powell too
then you could tell us how some east coast plugs did in your lakes.
there is some huge stripers in lake powell. :uhuh:

Thanks for the welcome. A friend was talking about a 5# striper thinking it was good sized. Its OK for a local lake fish. I've been spoiled. All I can remember is line peelling off and the size of the fish we caught and my sons grin last spring. Havent gone north to look for bigger fish yet. 5-15 thru 5-21 RJinHull will put me up. till then I work and plan but live through you guys.

Hi all,

Fairly new to the site, so have been lurking for the most part. I'm a fly and kayak fisherman on the North Shore, and am counting the days until I can wet the lines again. Tying flies and repairing rods/reels only gets you so far!

New to chasing the stripers in the salt. Been fishing all my life, mostly LMB and some freshy stripers. Got back into saltwater after a hiatus of about 5 years. Love it again. Was referenced to the site by Thumb-burner, who says it is great for advice on plug building.

Born in NC and lived there all my life. Hope to see some of you at the OBX. Thanks.

I think that a/c was flown by Lt. Carl Hayes, of Binghamton, NY. 61st fighter squad...P-47D...I might be wrong....but then again.....

Good eye. I couldn't make out an A/C porky enough at that angle...

Good Google: Littlefriends.co.uk Lt. Carl E Hayes, Binghampton, NY. 61st Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-7860 HV-J “Chow Hound”. Although the name was never applied to the a/c., Lt Hayes had the artwork design prepared by the unit artist. But in the case of this picture it was or that was a different aircraft...

Some good freshy fishing isn't too far from where I live, but to get the biguns you need to go out of state. Have a friend who goes (to TN) in the spring when they run in the rivers (and are heavy with eggs.) Numerous fish in the 50's with a personal best at 61.

John that is my father on his P-47 he flew in WW2 in Europe. We also have a short film clip from his wing camera on one of his missions. It took my brothers and me a long time to figure out the nose art. Yeah right.

I would like to see a Daily Fishing Report thread once the fishing season(salt water) starts!!!
Everyone could report what they caught that day and what they used to catch and the area they fished(say R.I.,Mass., etc) so you would not give away spots!!!
This would at least let people know good fishing is going on or not!!!
The weekly fishing reports you read are usually outdated and don't tell you what is happening right now!!!

I'm mostly a lurker, and when I do post, it's usually in the grumpy ole pharts or sports sections (The Sox are going to win another series before you and I die, BigFish, despite your current lack of confidence in all John Henry employees!).

My fish don't count as they usually caught from a boat, even if it is still in the slip (my 3 year old doesnt like it when the boat is on plane).

Thanks to all for the entertainment while passing the time from NOvember to April. If you cant fish, think about fishing.
