View Full Version : what's the best rattle can primer?? Thumb-Burner 01-04-2007, 08:07 AM I'm a rattle can kinda guy.. been all over the place with primers.. what readily available primer do you recommend in spray cans? thanks afterhours 01-04-2007, 08:18 AM zinseer coverstain. Thumb-Burner 01-04-2007, 08:21 AM Where would a mortal like me find that... never heard of it.. Flaptail 01-04-2007, 08:27 AM HD or Lowes. It has a gold label on a white can and says primer/sealer/bond coat Thumb-Burner 01-04-2007, 08:30 AM We even have HD and Lowes all the way down here in nc!! so this would be simply sprayed on..... dried and then paint? afterhours 01-04-2007, 08:35 AM light sanding first with fine sandpaper. Thumb-Burner 01-04-2007, 08:52 AM light sanding first with fine sandpaper. before or after the primer? afterhours 01-04-2007, 09:07 AM after- if you thin and spray with a detail gun no sanding needed. if you use spray bomb it sometimes goes on a little grainy. Charleston 01-04-2007, 09:14 AM If you're going to HD buy the Rustoleum sandable primer. It's cheap (approx 3 bux a can) and it dries nice and level. Give it a light sanding after it dries, wipe it down, blow it off and you're good to go. I buy it by the 6 can case!! saltydog 01-04-2007, 09:34 AM Same here, RUSTOLEUM ;) 2 coats, Sand in-between, an after. GOOD LUCK GOOD PLUGGIN:D Mugz 01-04-2007, 10:10 AM I wet sand my primer......sands nicely. 400 to 600 grit wetsand paper. I like it better than dry sanding. Just my .02 Jigman 01-04-2007, 12:09 PM I wet sand my primer......sands nicely. 400 to 600 grit wetsand paper. I like it better than dry sanding. Just my .02 If you sand too fine the paint will have nothing to grab. I don't go any finer than 220 grit. Jigman Mugz 01-04-2007, 12:37 PM If you sand too fine the paint will have nothing to grab. I don't go any finer than 220 grit. Jigman Never had a problem......paint sticks to the primer, no problems. afterhours 01-04-2007, 12:38 PM i use the zinseer 'cause i belive in oil base over oil base.....i sand to 150 prior and after primeing....seems to work ok for me. tattoobob 01-04-2007, 01:09 PM I have a gallon of Bins, I dip my plugs in it and hang this lets the primer into the holes so the inside is also primed GattaFish 01-04-2007, 03:40 PM are you using the gold can or the red and white can of sealer? Pete F. 01-04-2007, 03:53 PM I have a gallon of Bins, I dip my plugs in it and hang this lets the primer into the holes so the inside is also primed I had a lot of failures doing that. crash 01-04-2007, 04:23 PM I had a lot of failures doing that. Mind if I ask what kind of failures? The only thing I would worry about with the dip is having too thick of a coat, but I like the thought of primer in the through holes. Pete F. 01-04-2007, 04:46 PM The bin stuck to the wood and the back of the paint. The failures always seemed to be in the bin itself. Of course your results may vary. Charleston 01-04-2007, 10:27 PM Why do you need primer in the holes? Primer is to enhance paint adhesion only! Get the sealer in the holes. That should take care of it! vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
