I bought the reel new for the 06 season...went out one night late fall and realized there wasn't any "click" in the drag. Took the spool off...the clicker was totally corroded off and sitting in the base of the reel. Anybody have this happen or know what VS might do about it?

If it is less than a year old they should replace it no charge

They're almost definitely going to tap a new hole in the spool and put in a new clicker when you send it in for service. Getting a new spool would probably be asking a lot. You can try, but I don't see it happening.

The clicker is a good spot to hit with a little oil from time to time. Super Lube or anything designed to stop corrosion is the best bet. There's differing metals there and if you rarely rinse the reel with freshwater you can definitely develop some serious corrosion. It's not rust, just the usual white flaky corrosion you get from aluminum.

If you never wash or only occasionally wash your reel, I'd also suggest putting a drop of Super Lube on the screws that hold the line roller to the the rotor cup and also the counterweight.

Don't worry about reeling against the drag and twisting your line. You'll hear the line running out thru the guides and over the reel's line roller--and more importantly, you'll be the only person who hears it. :humpty:

same thing happened to me with my VS, clicker chit the bed, and I'll tell you what, I was absolutely lost without it. Takes a little time to get used to no clicker.

but when all was said and done, I was happier than a kid on christmas when my buddy tapped a new hole in the spool and and it sang like a canary once again :happy:

on one spool i've taken it off and on the other i just bent it out of the way from contact for now, but it will come off too. i'm like mike, i dont want someone else to hear my drag. i know when i fish hits and when i'm fighting one. the only reason i could see using a clicker on a spinning reel is if you are not holding the rod, such as chunking or not casting and retrieving. i used to get annoyed just hearing my old 704/706 dogs click while reeling. my .02.

I can't argue with what most of you think about the drag...but I will say that for me being a newer surfcaster, hearing that drag rip adds a little more to the experience. What's concerning most to me is that it broke in the first place after what I considered to be very little use.

The screw that holds it in doesn't go very deep. I've seen others fail before.

If the person who assembled your reel wasn't careful they may not have put the screw in fully or used loctite. I wouldn't worry about it.

I guarantee you I can yell "COMING DOWN, I'VE GOT A GOOD ONE ON a lot louder than a Van Staal clicker ;)

I'm with the no-clicker contingent. When I learned to remove clickers so that no one could hear that I was on to fish I found quite a bit of corrosion at the threads tapped into the reel rotor of one reel especially. Funny thing, when I sent my three reels in for yearly maintenance I got a call from them, they wanted me to know the clicker assembly was missing on each, and to see if I wanted to replace them!

Yeah, most of the time although every once in awhile Bryan and I have been known to wander over to 'the dark side'. Funny you and the decksweeper never came around the corner...

I like to bend my vs clicker out of the way as well so I can tell my partner that I had a fish take alot if line and he never knows if it is true or not.:bl2:

I have four of those little clickers. Like Mike I took it off when I bought the reel, now everytime I send it in for service they put another one on :rollem: and then I take it off again. Maybe I should send it back with a different piece missing, eventually I'll have another reel :)

If you dont want to do the cleaning after each night, use T9. This stuff is great. It dries to this waxi like clear film. And you can build up the layers. Boeing uses it for protection of aircraft components.
