View Full Version : Commandments of surfcasting???
Slipknot 01-09-2007, 12:41 PM In another thread Krispy mentions 2 of the commandments of surfcasting. what are the 10 commandments of surfcasting? I have never heard of this before. He says 2 of them are plugging durring the day and topwater fishing. What is wrong with that? I fish topwater alot more than I used to and also fished more during the daytime light hours last year than ever before. Am I getting old or something? I know that the best chances at large are by going at night but not always, lots of times the bass blitz during the day also.
Anybody???

The "10 Commandments" are not actually 10, and are just my BASIC tenents to finding larger fish. Its what should have been pounded into all our heads a millions times by now.
Every year I learn a little more and become a little better. I've been lucky to have alot of really good fishermen pass along alot of great info. Its whats repated to us over and over.
My Commandments for big fishing:
1. Fish at night
2. Fish the bottom
3. Fish eels
4. Fish big fish spots
5. Fish big fish gear
6. Fish the rule, not the exception
7. Keep your mouth shut
8. Structure; current

6. Limit your plug selection....carry less weight.
7. Water and snack a must.
8. Find your own spots/think out of the box.
9. Don't depend on your partner, be prepared.
10. Fish with confidence*

Krispy 01-09-2007, 03:37 PM I dont believe in commandments .
Commandment #11 - Thou shalt believe
Pete_G 01-09-2007, 03:56 PM It's funny you should mention "best chances for large are by going at night" but then add "not always" because I was talking with several people about it just a couple days ago.
Fish topwaters (or other plugs) during the day on a cloudy day when there's a full moon at night. Seriously. I'm far from alone on that one. Even clear days in the morning and evening it works. This isn't a schoolie technique or chasing birds, it's throwing big plugs where the big fish are likely to be.
This applies more in the spring and fall then the summer though.
Even when the moon is dark at night I don't completely rule out the daytime, but yeah, as a general rule night time is the right time.
12. Thou shalt pay close attention to when and where he catches big fish so he can repeat it in the future.

PaulS 01-10-2007, 01:10 PM 2. Fish the bottom
Please expound (is that a word) on this? Do you really find the bottom that much more effective at night than say a danny at night?
Thanks
JohnR 01-10-2007, 01:19 PM Please expound (is that a word) on this? Do you really find the bottom that much more effective at night than say a danny at night?

While not a hard fast 100% rule it is understood that the bigger fish are on the bottom and that if those fish are on the bottom and you put your offering up higher that smaller and more nimble fish will get to your offering than the bigger fish below.
Canalman 01-10-2007, 01:31 PM 1. Fish live eels
2. See commandment 1
3. See Commandment 2
.......
Canalman 01-10-2007, 01:32 PM 10. Uhh use Surf Asylum Plugs when eels are not available :heybaby:
Canalman 01-10-2007, 01:40 PM Actually I'd say
1. Fish Live Bait When Available
2. Concentrate on a small area(s) and learn it(them) cold
3. Don't Chase Reports
4. STFU: Learn to be satisfied with personal satisfaction
5. Ignore the small fish that are readily available
6. Stay the course
7. Stay Confident (VERY IMPORTANT)
8. Throw your cell phone away
9. Bring a camera and a scale :smash:
10.Never Lie (A wiseman named Mike Veracka once said a fisherman only has his integrity, once you lose that, you're always a liar)

WOW! :err: .....I've broken all those commandments in just 1 night.............with YOU! ....I haven't learned anything from this dang computer......:bsod:.
bloocrab 01-10-2007, 05:38 PM Some fishermen will only fish when they think the time/tide/wind/and the rest of the ingredients to successful BIGfish catching are upon them.
My #1 Commandment - FISH MOVE, so FISH OFTEN.
Commandment #2 - After that "Last" cast.......cast a few more times just in case the fish didn't hear you say it was your "last cast"
#3 - Don't fart in your waders
#4 - Don't put your cell phone in your lowest pants pocket when your wading far out on a sand bar awaiting a call from your buddy down the beach
#5 - When you arrive at the beach at night, use your high beams to look for breaking fish in the surf
#6 - When fishing the P-town area, take your waders off when you get home, not in the parking lot. You don't want to get caught undressing anywhere up there.
#7 - If the sign says "PRIVATE PROPERTY - DO NOT ENTER"...this means there's fish there
#8 - Always walk ahead of your fishing partner on the beach, after all...you want to find that washed up plug first
#9 - Make sure you clear the edge of your waders while pee-ing ...get an extension if needed. :eek5:
#10 - Always thank your Creator for a safe night and a chance to do it all over again.
nightfighter 01-10-2007, 05:53 PM Even though I always approach the water with anticipation of catching, if not catching large, I ALWAYS make a point to make myself appreciate the beauty, the solitude, the routine of the 'hunt', and the freedom we have to be able to do this, even when I don't catch.....
Slipknot 01-10-2007, 06:14 PM WOW! :err: .....I've broken all those commandments in just 1 night.............with YOU! ....I haven't learned anything from this dang computer......:bsod:.
I thought the same thing that night you 3 went out also Bloo.
Bill L 01-10-2007, 08:53 PM 1-10....do whatever makes YOU happy
Thats the only rule that matters
