View Full Version : how do you guys feel about...
J_T_R 01-15-2007, 12:15 AM your plugs being sold on ebay by others, especially for those of you that don't build commercially. the last time i checked i saw a mac pikie go for $52 and right now there is a jigman pikie on there. i don't know about you guys, but i don't think i would feel too good about someone selling my stuff for a profit, unless i authorized it. i mean, if i am going to build plugs of that caliber, and trade them and give them away to others, i wouldn't want to see the same plugs catching big bucks on the auction site, especially when i could be the one putting them on there myself if i really wanted to. this isn't an attack on anyone selling the plugs- i'm just looking for some opinions from the guys that have plugs end up on ebay.
Tagger 01-15-2007, 04:31 AM some of them are trades ,,, alot of them are gifts ... "try this ".. saw one of my real early polaris type poppers up there ... embarrising .. I got mixed feelings about it ..
capesams 01-15-2007, 07:09 AM Once the little bird has left the nest....you have no controll...it's fair game to anyone who own's it.
Jigman 01-15-2007, 07:27 AM Once the little bird has left the nest....you have no controll...it's fair game to anyone who own's it.
Pretty much sums it up. The only time I get a little pissed off is if it is a plug that someone ho'd and said they would test for me. I get no feedback, and they sell it as unused.

Labrador1 01-15-2007, 09:46 AM I agree with Capesams and Jigman. People can do whatever they want with them once they leave my hands. Only thing I would say is that if someone was buying regularly from me and immediately turning around and selling them all for profit - I would probably not put that person too high on my priority list when it comes to selling my next batch.
Rockfish9 01-15-2007, 09:58 AM I agree with the last three, I dont control my (adult) childrens lives, I cant control my plugs once they leave the cave..... Must be the reason so many are "locked down" in the fortress....
I think if I saw one of my plugs on an auction site with a bid of $50 on it.......I would be amazed and thrilled. Would mean that people really like my plugs......I would be humbled. But that is just me.
I have absolutely no interest in selling them. It's a labor of love. The only other thing I would like more is to see one of my plugs hanging out of the mouth of a 50 lber.
hunan 01-15-2007, 01:23 PM i think it all has to do with intent. for example, if i sold or traded a plug to you, then we're good. do what you must. but if you told me that you loved the color of the pencil i just painted and i gave it to you with the understanding that you were going to fish it and then sold it, that to me is a different story. by the way, you'll never see my mac stuff on ebay!!:scream:
stripercrazy 01-15-2007, 01:40 PM there like stocks, after you buy them they split:laugha: hold on to them long enought they may split again:laugha:   just jokeing....if someone's selling plugs like salty or lex,afterhours...then its ok to sell on ebay.. it there not then its not ok in my eyes:pop:
eastendlu 01-15-2007, 01:42 PM I just give all my ho'ed and traded plugs to two of the best plug collectors i know of.They are Mr. Bluefish and Mr Stiped Bass.:scatter: :gu:
GattaFish 01-15-2007, 02:17 PM I think if someone gives you a gift then it is NOT ok to put on ebay or sell it,,,, If someone who is not a commercial builder is kind enough to sell you something to offset costs because YOU have to have one of his plugs then it should be kept between the two of you.... If you have to sell it because of hardship then the first right of refusal should go to the guy you got it from.
Personally I would be honored to own some of the masterpieces I have seen on here.........
Karl F 01-15-2007, 02:26 PM mixed feelings at best.. what's the old punchline?.. kinda like watching your mother-in-law drive your brand new corvette off the side of the grand canyon....might sour some on swaps and stuff down the line.. seen some of mine go that way, and also some of the ones donated.. and the ones that ya give to folks.. then see them up for $.. oh well.. like CS said.. ya can't control them once they leave ya.. but.. might be a little more reluctant to let them go now.... I understand why some guys won't part with thiers.. or do so less willingly...myself.. i gotta problem.. can't let the ones i've gotten from others go.. and can't hang on to the ones i make..:hihi:...
if someone sells a plug i made on ebay for say, 50 bucks, you must have done something right :D
look at it this way-
A- my plugs are in demand
B- My plugs are fetching 50 bucks
C- Thats 50 bucks that someone selling beachmasters wont get :hihi:
D- once word spreads that my plugs are going for 50 bucks, the demand will increase, and you may feel inclined to raise your price.

All well and good for you commercial guys, but there are still some of us, that don't sell.. strictly hobby types.
Charleston 01-15-2007, 03:23 PM . can't let the ones i've gotten from others go.. and can't hang on to the ones i make..:hihi:...
I'm suffering from the same thing :rotf2:
justplugit 01-15-2007, 03:30 PM Don't have to worry about any of mine gettin sold. :tooth: But no matter what, i would never sell a plug someone gave me.
Too me, they're a labor of love and the personality of the guy is part of them.Could never put a price on that.
Pete F. 01-15-2007, 05:09 PM Kinda like after I helped my brother build his house pretty much gratis, he said if he did that again he could make some money. I told him the next one is not free.
I've sold alot of plugs on this site and the other one. In alot of cases the builders are from s-b but all of what I've sold has been payed for by me.
I have a few that were given to me that I would never sell. They have to much senimental value and that's worth far more than $$$$$.
tattoobob 01-15-2007, 06:16 PM I feel the same way if some one gives me a plug I will never sell it, it gets fished and I give feed back to the builder, If I buy a plug and it doesn't get used as much or I have never caught on it, It is my choice to do what I like with it.
I always post my stuff here first to pass it along.
Jigman 01-15-2007, 06:30 PM .. saw one of my real early polaris type poppers up there ...
That might be the biggest problem. That is, builder X makes a batch of plugs, still in the proto-type stage, not indended to be sold. May have used some lesser grade components (paint, clear, etc.) cause they were more concerned about seeing how the fish reacted to the plug than building it to last. Give a few away to people to get some feedback. Year or so later, after you've tweaked the plug some, you see that proto-type for sale. You now have a lessor plug out there, with your name associated with it, for sale.

Slipknot 01-15-2007, 06:34 PM You have to remember, Mac is not making anymore plugs and have a good reputation of catching, so they fetch a few more dollars now that he is no longer building.
I think it obviously would bother the original builder if a plug or plugs were given to someone and they then turn a profit from it/them. But once it leaves your hands, you have no control over what happens to it.
what if a plug you donated to a fundraising raffle sold later on for big bucks by the winner ??? nothing much you can do about it, he won it fair and square and has every right to sell it or fish it or collect it.
If plugs are sold, there usually is a reason. sometimes ya need the money more than you need the plug anymore. I make a point to not sell any that were given to me, but if I have to sell some swap plugs or plugs I bought, I will if I need the money more than I need the plug and I'd hope the builder would understand just like I understand when others do it.
I've given away way too many plugs in the past and now a days I just lose them to trades, fish and operator error :(.
Plugs are like your little children, :err: scared to let them go.

Thanks for that ..exactly .. . I'd say its buyer beware ,, Can't blame anyone for selling .. paying too much .,.many sell plugs to buy other plugs .. its part of the disease we have .... not a hater... like i said ... just freakin embarrissed sometimes .

lurch 01-15-2007, 10:30 PM What drives me crazy is seeing people only buying plugs on this site or other sites at a lower cost and two days later they are on e-bay for a much higher price....I think we all know the names of sellers on e-bay who do this.
I hate greedy people!!
northfork larry 01-20-2007, 12:24 PM I guess for some people making $20 or $30 on someone elses work once in a while seems pretty innocent and harmless and in a capitalist nation it is certainly not illegal. Immoral?,aggravating? scurvy?, you bet. A lot of what I see being done in business, big and small leaves a bit to be desired, but we here on this site who build and trade and give away plugs know right from wrong and don't usually get involved with the jerks who don't if we can help it. I recently sold some plugs to a fellow with the thinly disguised warning that if anything underhanded went on with the transaction that I couldn't in good concience deal with him again and guess what? Within 2 days one of them was on E-Bay. That was a mistake that he'll not get another chance to make. Nuff said.
Hey Larry I have a few of ur BD's an I am a big fan..

Most definetly,
Tony was right. I now look back at my early stuff as most of us probably have and think :yak6: . I even spent a day in the shop bandsawing a bunch I still had left. Yeah it may hurt for someone to dish your first borns but it pushed me to work hard and try to make them better. Thanks Tony!
Now if I could get Nib to give me another kick in the butt to get back into the shop, I'd be happy. I Haven't turned a plug since RI. :(
Backbeach Jake 01-21-2007, 08:05 AM I don't know the seller's financial situation, so I can't judge them. But, but if they needed cash for whatever and felt that they could get some money for one of my plugs ( yeah, right) then I'd be glad to have helped out. The point is, I GAVE the plug, now it's theirs to do with as they please. Hang it, fish it, pay the rent, give it away. It's all fine by me.
numbskull 01-21-2007, 08:22 AM Gee, Fred. I pray over the one you gave me. :laugha:
Backbeach Jake 01-21-2007, 09:46 AM Yeah, I pray over mine to: Please Lord, let these swim right side up....for a change.

thortum 01-23-2007, 03:05 PM Just a thought: I was reading just this morning about someone on this site finding 30 [?] plugs in the heads of dead fish that had washed up on the beach! Great source of e-bay material.
