My son Tom will be going to the island the last week in June to surf fish. Can anyone tell me about this Islands beach access for 4x4s. And in general terms good surf fishing areas for that time of year.

The fishing there is great. Here's some advice. What ever you do stay away from tall, red haired, hippie looking, humanoid type creatures that can sometimes be seen scrummaging the shore lines after dark.:skulz:

Hi Al - haven't been there in a few years but access was good and then you could essentially get two different stickers for the Island. While not necessary, some of the better spots are accessible with the 4X4 and pass...

If you want to blend in as a tourist, fish an 8' Honey Lami with a 6500SS flipped upside down - a/k/a Backwinding ;)

I fished the island once back in 1998 and I don't have much to offer access-wise. But what I can tell you to get your juices flowing, is that I went 4th of July - July 10 and the fishing was good... with several fish in 20's... but everyone I talked to said that the best weeks had been the 2 previous. Who knows if it will pan out that way... but a pretty good rule of thumb if you're gonna try a new destination in RI or MA June is the month to do it. You should do well. We fished "Surfside" and around the airport... also Madaket. Hope I'm not spot burning here... I think that's general enough :err:

The north side of the island down Madaket way can be very good in June-July. Seals can be a problem around Smith point.

Blitz my son will be staying at a condo on the western tip of the island. Having said that whats the 4x4 accessibility from that point around the south side up to great point. Also the access from the point along the north side. beaches. John R posted that there were 2 different stickers available. Which pass covers what beaches and what is the weekly cost for each. Plus where do you get them.

He would like to fish rigged eels there so hows the bluefish population at that time. In NY you get chopped up within 3 casts.

Nantucket is a wonderful place to fish, I am sure you will enjoy it. There are a number of hotspots namely Great Point and Smiths Point. OSV permits are available to get to GP thru the trusteess of the reservations TTOR (You can look them up online). The beach may or maynot be open depending on the bird situation. Seals can be a problem too but normally by July they thin down a bit. Every year is different it seems.
The nantucket sound side of the island is a wonderful light tackle fishery. It is pretty shallow and a ideal spot for fly rod and light gear. The south side is similar to fire island in NY...miles of sandy beach...only nicer. If I were you I would look into fishing Great Point, Miacomet and Smith with the big stick and if you can get a vehicle over to coatue bring your light gear and a lunch for an extended day of fun...for sight casting to bass....this is truely a special place IMO. tread lightly there are few remaining places like this on our coast. Also, you might consider a charter boat trip or two while you are there. The boat fishing can be spectacular. The local shops have the buzz.

I have fished alot of places..
I have to say I have had the best nightime blitz type fishing of all in Nantucket..
It was surely timing..To say I spent ten nights hooked up is no lie..
