looking for some advice on this blank. I know its a 10 footer but whats its like when its been cut down to 9'-6" or 9'-0. What i'm looking for is a moderate action close to 9'0 +/- rod to throw plugs/rigged sluggos, surf hogs, etc. from 1.5 ounce to 3 ounce. I would be using it in rocky areas 6'-15' deep. I know lami makes some 9'0 blanks (that might be a fast action blanks? not sure) thanks.

I have a 120 1l it is a fast action rod but will throw what you want. i use mine from sluggos to plugs up to 3 oz not cut down. It,s my all around rod. For a 9 ft the rainshadow 1088 is sweet for the same purpose maybe better. hope this helps.

SJ1-thx. I ran a search on the blank before and most people that have really like the rod. I know some guys here have cut it back.I like a 9'0 one or close to it. just looking to see what everyone thinks as far as cutting it back.

i like 4 inches off the tip- if you do that you can wing a 3 ounce darter a country mile. without the cut tip I was forced to lob cast the same plugs.

can you work pencils with 4" off the tip or is it too stiff? thanks..

The 1201L or the 1081M are fast action rods without the whippyness you need IMO for those lighter lures. I have held both including the 1081L, but they all were too stiff for my liking.

You want an MB1083M or the S glass version if you can find it. Its a 9' rod with great action. Has a great looking bend to it & has the whippyness in the tip. About the same weight as a 1201L but made of fiberglass. (DURABLE), & 1/2 the price.

Go with a 1088, it's fast action and 9'.
The 120 1 series are far from fast action.

sure.. the rod is soft enough that that 4 inches makes no difference.

I have to try that Eb. Just hate to cut a blank that expensive..http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/sobbing.gif

lots of guys love the 1201 L as an eel rod.. its got some nice movement just about down to the reel seat when you lay into it. with my 6500 cs mag elite on the rod it weighs about 2 lbs which is nice too.

the lami gsb-series are moderate or medium action rods, not fast. most arra's are moderately fast. rainshadow su/sw-series blanks are fast. the mb1081m blank has little power in it's stock length and you cannot cast much more than 1.5 oz w/ it.

the gsb1201L is a slightly slower action rod compared to the gsb1201m. it almost has the feel of a glass rod, but lighter as it is graphite. it is a very durable rod. it is an excellent pencil popper rod. stock, the rod really tapers off at 3oz and maybe 2.5 oz. cutting off the tip of this rod would make it a nice eel or plugging rod. how much you cut off depends on how heavy you plan on throwing and what you desired overall length is to be. after finding your ideal tip power, cut a little of the butt to make the length you want. a few inches off the butt wont change the action of this rod, but cutting a foot off would. as always, cutting a factory blank voids the factory warrenty.

think about what you typical or average lure range is. is it usually around 2 oz? is it usually around 2.5-3 ounce? that little difference can determine your ideal rod.

Im guessing your talking about the MB1083M when you say it can only cast up to 1.5oz.

The GSB1081L I would classify as a fast action blank. Since I like to use a light drag setting It cuts off at the top 1/3. I would classify the MB1083M as a moderate action rod.

GSB1081L Is too stiff for lures under 2 oz IMO.

MB1083M Is perfect for most lures around 2 oz & less IMO.

Then again you could use either rod for lures up to 2.5 oz no problem. Its a matter of personal preference. You need to hold the blank to know what you want then factor in that it will stiffen up slightly with epoxy/guides/& type of wraps/length you use for your guides.

Both are about the same weight. even though one is glass. No single rod does it all. & asking that one rod works all lures in 1-3 oz range equally well & works well when you hook up is asking alot of a single rod.

I bought a GSB108 1L for back bay/schoolie action last month, wrapped by Lou Caruso. I chose this blank for it's purported ability to handle lures less than 2 oz. Haven't fished it yet.

I also bought a GSB120 1L & 1M from a guy; he had these wrapped by Al Goldberg. Both rods have had 4" cut off from their tips. I had a chance to cast both but have not hooked up w/ any of them.

I bought the 120 1L for overall use for inlets & beach fishing, to throw 1 -4 oz. I will probably use this rod, as well as a GSB132 1L for most for my surf needs. It threw up to 3 oz very well with the tip modified. The 120 1M I got for jetties, eeling, & Montauk rocks. However, this rod's handle is about 3" longer than on my 120 1L for some serious lifting power. The former owner of this rod used it for eeling off jetties and whupped many large with it.

I also have a factory rod XS101MC rated 2-5 oz for conventional plugging & eeling. I won't cut the tip on this one since I think I can load it more easily as a 10' er.

Enough rambling. To answer your question, I think cutting down the 120 1L 4" off the tip will probably suit your needs well, especially if you need the length to steer fish from the rocks. Then again , the 120 1M will be more durable and powerful in these rocky holes you fish and still handle the stuff you like to throw fairly well. I think I need another 120 1M, but this time wrapped convench.:rotfl:

Good luck!

I have a 120 1L that I cut about 9" off the butt. I had read an article by John Skinner a while back, and this was the setup for his eel rod. I'm sure I have a copy of the article if you want it. I used the rod a couple of times this year with smaller plugs and I can't wait to try it with sluggo's.

the 120 1L w/ 12" taken from the butt is an amazing stick. At least 2 people I know swear by it. It's a great 9' rod in ways that the 108 1M and 108 1L aren't, still tough enough to throw the heavier stuff if need be. Pair a cut-down 10L w/ a VS200 and you've got nearly a perfect stick for walking the sand beaches throwing 2.5oz and below.

I have been seriously thinking about one of these rods for a while...and stumbled on this old thread.
I had heard about shortening the butt, but the 4" tip trim sounds interesting.

How is the circumcised version throwing light? (plastics...lightly weighted rubbah..etc.)
