spence 01-27-2007, 09:27 PM Bob, most of these are for resale...they priced them so low I can do 2X+ on Ebay...
Swimmer, the cheapest tie in the lot is $145 retail...the Kiton's are 200+ :zup:
With tax it's over a grand, for 5...count 'em five freaking neck ties.

A good point...
I've shopped there a lot and plan to review my last bill carefully. I'd wager they've got that problem fixed...
Lordy I hope
You don't want to buy a fine double four fold tie do ya :wavey:

People who don't leave the house?
BigBo 01-28-2007, 05:53 AM Who buys ties? Although I think I do have one that I purchased at Sears or somewhere similar like 20 years ago.
Backbeach Jake 01-28-2007, 06:24 AM My daughter does that, buys pricey fashion items at those TJMtype stores and turns them at Ebay. Does very well at it. Vintage clothing from yard sales and estate sales bring mega bucks for the right items.
spence 01-28-2007, 08:41 AM Who buys ties on eBay if you can buy them at TJMaxx for less?
Most people don't have the access to enough good stuff to be able to buy at a discount...so Ebay ends up being the clearing house.
The hard part is getting it cheap enough. To make any money you pretty much need to buy at clearance prices, and by that time most merchandise is pretty beat up.
A few years ago I made a mint selling French copper cookware on Ebay I found at Homegoods on clearance. Paid for all my Christmas gifts :claps:

boot man 01-28-2007, 09:00 AM Any deals on sweater vests?
stripersnipr 01-28-2007, 09:04 AM My Daughter has a friend who actually developed a nice little business started by reselling discount purchased items on Ebay. Its now become a kind of personal shopping service for people in rural parts of the country where they have limited access to major retail outlets. She develops family profiles for her customers and provides back to school clothing, holiday shopping etc. designed for their specific needs. She buys right throughout the year, takes specific orders and also sends a monthly E-Mail to each customer with offerings aimed at their specific sizes, styles and tastes. Any surplus she then offers in a monthly newsletter to the entire customer base. Last I talked to her she had 300 - 400 regular customers and strong growth. Perfect job for a shopaholic.
spence 01-28-2007, 09:39 AM Any deals on sweater vests?
Actually did score a nice Italian made marino wool number for sixteen dollars the other week :o
To be honest it's the only one I own. My shape doesn't favor the look unless it's worn under a sportcoat which I don't do that often given the warm weather we've had.

This is a big driver for this type of business.
It's also led to online shops like Zappos.com where they sell at near list price but offer free shipping both ways and very generous return policies. Unless you're in a large metro area most department or even specialty stores tend to be quite limited.

In this case (turning 'em over on eBay) "the Beachmaster of ties" might be the more appropriate analogy. :hee:

Swimmer 01-28-2007, 10:51 AM Spence I am a little out of touch in the tie department. The last time I did look at some ties was at Wrentham Mall in one of those 5th Avenue stores, can't remember the name, and the ties in there were $50.00 on sale. Those prices just steeled my opinon about wearing ties because someone named Cravat in the 1400's thought it was pretty. I consider myself dressed up if the denims are new and the polo shirt as well is new. To me someone wearing a tux is like me wearing Dockers. I am not making fun of those who do dress up and look nice, certainly not. It is just not me. $145.00 is wild though. Must be silk, and very nice silk at that.
spence 01-28-2007, 11:00 AM It is just not me. $145.00 is wild though. Must be silk, and very nice silk at that.
I own one tie I paid nearly a hundred dollars for. It's completely handmade down to the rolled edges. More handwork than a custom plug, it's a work of art.
But 98% of my ties were purchased at discount for less than 20 bucks...and ideally less than 15.
I think the money is crazy as well, but there is so much wealth in this country that won't bat an eyelash at a 200 dollar tie to go with their four thousand dollar suit :zup:
And for the record, my most expensive suit was 180 bucks :)

It is kind of scary to post a 7 day auction and have people placing the minimum 50 dollar bid within minutes of the post :grins:
No shill bidding, these are ties not plugs :whackin:

I actually have seen what I believe to be conterfit merchandise a few times...Usually it's really bad and easy to spot...but as always buyer beware.

fishsmith 01-29-2007, 10:24 AM gotta love the shipping price for ties.
Not bad Spence, that is close to free money.
Question:
When you sell on ebay, do you have to claim the sale on your taxes?

The shipping is about actual, Priority + insurance.
I'd wager there's a huge amount of tax revenue lost on Ebay sales not reported to the government. I do it so infrequently it's not even on the radar, but I'd wager there are thousands of people who do run it as a small business.

Mike P 01-29-2007, 01:38 PM Theoretically, if you sell an item for more than you paid for it, it's a capital gain.
But I think the IRS has bigger fish to fry. ;)
Canalman 01-29-2007, 03:58 PM Only geeks know what ties are worth... do they clip on? :laugha:
How the hell are ya Jeff?
RIROCKHOUND 01-29-2007, 05:32 PM Jeez..
You buy yuppie ties and then hose other yuppies to make money back.
I like it!
I need a new sportcoat at some point.
Fashionista Jeff, what color would you recommend for casual :D
RickBomba 01-29-2007, 06:44 PM Went looking for some of these at my local TJM, nada.
Once again Spence is on the cutting edge of striped bass fashion.
Hey,
You gonna make it up to Killswitch, Chimera, and Masters of Doom?
I'm off for the six days before it (three day Bomba ice fishing debacle) and had to promise to work on the 23rd.
Sucks!!!
Later,
Rick

Diamond Tackle 01-31-2007, 07:58 PM Hey spence , whats a Bijan go for these days. We used to get them for free from the man himslelf at Xmas time back in the late 80's. (I used to work fo American Express in NYC) Guess I should have stached them instead of re-gifting. Still got well over 100 from Churchills though that are pretty nice, but I think Paisley is out of fashion right now or is it coming back again? Have not worn a suit to work in quite a few years.
spence 01-31-2007, 08:20 PM Personally I think paisley is a classic...
Bijan could fetch some serious money if in good condition. Way overpriced for what it is, but always ultra-premium...

Pete_G 01-31-2007, 08:56 PM The IRS has been eyeing eBay for years.
The scope and complexity of trying to track eBay sales is considered to be one of the main things holding them back.
I heard today Lamb of G_D is playtin on Conan O'Brien on 2/9
