Thats the only way to describe him! Ronnie....best link I have ever clicked on...thanks for that! He sure was the supreme stick handler and his sense of timing and his surroundings were the most incredible any hockey player has ever had! Without a doubt the greatest hockey player in history....and we were blessed to have had him here in Boston!:btu:

Not only the greatest hockey player ever in my opinion,
But one of the greatest role models ever!!!
probably the most humble star ever, unlike the typical all about me and my money athlete of today!
I feel very gratefull to have been able to grow up watching him play!

"The goal" is actually the first memory I have of Orr and he was the reason I started playing hockey, like every kid at that time. I wish I could have seen him when he first started with the B's but I was just a baby.

The best ever.

Robert Gordon Orr was the greatest hockey player of all time. That would have been true no matter what position he played. If you put the pads on him he would have been the greatest goalie of all time. He could skate as well as any forward in the NHL, even the Golden Jet.

Put Gretsky back on the blue line instead of center and see how he'd do. Or at wing, where he'd have to go into the corners with tough defensemen ;)

My boyhood idol. Revolutionized the game from that position, although he could have played anywhere and been the best. A real class act even to this day. Too bad medicine wasn't as advanced as it is now or he would have played a lot longer. Remember when Boston was a Hockey town. The B's owned Boston. I'll bet you Bobby Orr still has never payed for a meal or a beer in Boston to this day. Hockey was on national TV every Sunday. I played street hockey all summer long. I remember being at the Garden at a game with the Black Hawks, Mikita, Hull, ect.. and it was his 22nd birthday. He won the game in the last seconds on an ice length rush.I still have the record "Goal Bruins" somewhere after they won the cup. Wow time flies. Sorry for the long winded response but really brings back some great memories. Life is too short. P.

He'd certainly be the right winger on my all-time best starting 6 ;) I think Hull was also a right winger, and I think Gordie might be able to play the left wing a little better than Hull could, so I might stick him at left wing and the Golden Jet at right. If not, the Big M, Frank Mahovlich, at left wing. I'd only let Gretsky center that line if Jean Beliveau was unavailable. ;)

Let it be known that I never had a chance to watch Maurice Richard play, so he could affect that all-time team in a big way. :humpty:

Orr and Larry Robinson at defense. No doubts there.

And the Octopus in goal.

Don't forget Espo. Game is so different nowadays. I long for the more violent game of canadian hockey. The European style is not my bag. I like the keep your head up or get killed style of hockey that I grew up on. Plus like all sports nowadays the leagues are so watered down now with all the teams involved that it makes for a very boring mediocre game. Bring back the original 6 teams. To me that is when there were rivalries and allstar's 3 shifts deep. The Habs and Bruins had everything Yank's Sox's have. Now just ain't there. Unfortunately you can't go back in time and I will just live on my hockey memories of late 60's and 70's. It will never be the same.

When you're evaluating the greatness of Gretsky, bear in mind that he was skating against defensemen, and shooting at goalies, who would have had a hard time making it in the AHL back in the 60s and early 70s ;)

Even the first round of expansion in the late 60s didn't dilute the talent the way it's been diluted today.

Raider Ronnie
02-08-2007, 07:13 PM
No doubt, Gordy Howe was one of the best ever, but I don't think he could skate with Bobby Orr.
Gretsky and Mario Lemieux would have had a tough time playing in the 60s & 70s the way the game was so much more physical!

Thanks for posting that Ron, that was fun to watch. He truly revolutized hockey and his position, and while both Gretzky and Howe were amazing offensive players, I never felt either had revolutionized their position.

In watching that another Orr video came up as recommended, kind of nice seeing what the likes of the Golden Jet and Clarke(his comment struck me as perfect-"he did it with grace, elegance,....and modesty")thought of Orr:

Leetch comes pretty close to Orr. First American to win the Conn Smythe trophy. Orr changed the game. Gordie was certainly up there, maybe the best. Let's not discount Gretzky though, he too changed the game. So did Super Mario. It's a different game now then it was back then. Sometimes, I just wish it were the Original 6 playing. Going to the Rangers game tonight, they are on FIRE. Glad to see the Thorton is doing well...

All you have to look at is 69-70 season. No one has ever done this. Ross Trophy, Norris Trophy, Hart Troph, Conn Smythe Trophy. All 4. No one before or after and probably never will. I get goose bumps just thinking about that year. I did not miss a second of any game played that year.
He lead the league in scoring, Art Ross Trophy, twice 70 and 75
He won the Norris trophy from 69 thru 75
He won the Hart Trophy 70 and 71 and 72
Espo won the Ross trophy every year from 69, 71,72,73,74 so Orr had a lot of competition those years but still managed over a 100 points all those years as a defense man. Man IMO he is the greatest. The others are right up there but not quite on his level and he was a defenseman not a forward which is who we usually compare him to. I too wish it was the original six. League is way too watered down for me, as it is in most pro sports nowadays.

Gretsky was an offensive magician, but without a goon to protect him, he would not have hasted 1/2 a season back then, Gordie Howe would have leveled him just to prove that point !!! and Orr could and did drop the gloves whenever necessary!

It's apples & oranges. Gretzky played in a much more diluted league. He was surounded by superstars. Even the 3rd line on those Cup teams were allstars. How many H of F players were there? Blueliners...allstars, goalie... Hof F. I believe those teams would have won the Cups even without him, in fact, they did. Orr put the NHL on the map throughout the country. To further overuse a phrase, he made everybody around him better, much better. Esposito made a living and set a scoring record (at the time) just hanging around the net and scooping rebounds. #4 got in front of enough pucks to keep Cheevers star shining. Even his own players on the ice with him would find themselves in awe and mesmerized by his supremacy. He's got my vote for #1 all time:D . BTW, anyone ever hear #9 , Detroit RedWings?????

Bobby Orr's stick handling was always what impressed me the most I think. The things he could do with a puck boggled the mind! Players today are so one dimensional......quite sad really. Having grown up in a house with an older brother who ate, slept and dreamed Big Bad Bruins, I had no choice but to watch the hockey games and I was glad I did. I can only think of 3 professional athletes who truly revolutionized the way their position was played---Orr, Lawrence Taylor and Bill Russell. Russ brought defense, shot blocking, and rebounding followed by the quick outlet pass triggering the fast break to the center position. Taylor forced offensive coaches to redesign blocking schemes to defend him, often requiring them to assign a tackle where in the past, outside linebackers were always blocked by a tight end or a running back. And no defenseman ever dominated a game from the blueline, or made the breathtaking end-to-end rushes, the way that Orr did--before or since.

Fans would show up early at Fenway, to watch BP. Not to see guys hit gumball lobs over the wall, but to watch Evans warming up his throwing arm from right field to third base. In a game, guy on first, ball hit to right, you'd hear a murmur start to rise, and if the runner on first rounded second and tried to go to third on Evans' arm, you'd have everyone on their feet. He and Clemente had the most accurate guns from right field that I ever saw, even better than Barfield's. I would have like to have been around when Carl Furillo was playing, though--old timers say his arm was the best-ever.

I thought I would never see them win anything again in my life as long as Jacobs owned the team. I had Gord Kluzak on a charter last year and he told me the same !
So with the Bruins winning it all anyone think less of Bobby's career and that he is the greatest ?

Of the 3 Cups that the B's have won in my lifetime, this one was far and away the most satisfying. Just because this was the Little Engine That Could--a team that overachieved, and beat more talented teams to win it.

Orr's Bruins were one of the great underachievers in sports history. The only other team I can think of that compares is the Oakland A's of the late 1980s, who won one WS with what was far and away the best team in baseball for 3 years running. The Bruins were arguably the best team in the NHL for 5 straight years, 1968-1972. It's really a close call whether they were better than the 68 and 69 Habs teams that beat them in the Eastern finals, but in 71 they were the greatest offensive machine assembled in that era of the NHL. You can chalk it up to the Octopus if you want, but great teams don't let a goaltender beat them. Those Big, Bad Bruins were a totally undisciplined mob off the ice, and often on the ice. They coasted into the playoffs that year, and when the playoffs started, they thought that all they had to do to win the Cup was show up. Two Cups in 3 years sounds fine on paper, but they should have been one of the sport's greatest dynasties for 5 years running. But------none of this was Orr's fault. He played at a very high level in all of those series. And his off-the-ice habits weren't like guys like Espo, Sanderson and McKenzie, who never saw a bar they could pass without stopping in for a few.

It's also a different era. More teams, more dilution of talent, and a salary cap. The playing field is more level, and 4th seeds and lower do have a realistic chance at the Cup.

Nope---he's still the greatest.

And let's not forget that he was playing on a knee that had already seen two major surgeries by the 1970 season...... Imagine if he had been really healthy throughout his career.....

I hadn't remembered this.....sucks.

Orr's first professional contract was one of the first in professional ice hockey to be negotiated by an agent. It made him the highest-paid player in NHL history as a rookie.[4] His second contract was the first million-dollar contract in the NHL. However, after his retirement, Orr learned that he was deeply in debt and he had to sell off most of what he owned. Orr broke with his agent Alan Eagleson and sued the Black Hawks to settle his contract. Orr and his family returned to Boston where Orr went into business to rebuild his finances. Orr aided the investigations that led to Eagleson's fraud convictions and disbarment. Orr also supported the law suit that exposed the corruption of the NHL's pension plan.

If you buy that "plus/minus" gives you the best picture of the most complete hockey player, it's not even close. Even though they didn't award for it during Orr's day, he led the NHL in +/- for 6 years, and never finished with a minus rating. Including the all time record of +124 in 1970-1971. Except for when he was in the box himself, he played on the PK unit, and always was at the left point on the PP. They didn't record time on ice back then, but he routinely played over 30 minutes a game. Only two players have ever finished a season with a +100 or more rating---Orr and Larry Robinson, and the case is closed there for "best defensemen ever". Because in addition to being a scoring machine, Orr played defense.

Gretzky led the league in +/- 3 times, but, he also finished with a minus rating 7 times over his career. Which, granted, was twice as long as Orr's.

Both made everyone around them better, too.
